What a user gets

Stopping an on-demand seat with rig seat stop no longer makes an otherwise healthy running rig show degraded in rig ps or the TUI. The stopped seat stays visible, process counts remain accurate, and real failures in other seats still affect rig health.

rig start --last and rig start --rigs <rig> retain the full per-seat lifecycle for candidate selection and the later already-running check. A partly running rig with an intentionally stopped seat is still listed and reports rig_not_stopped (exit 1). The internal stop during rig seat launch --fresh --stop does not record final stop intent: if the replacement is refused, the missing occupant still degrades a rig with a healthy live sibling.

Refs #401.

How you verified it

Current head: a1611d08dcf0a5ab63a40a6eb89104cc4d697f89, including main's adjacent session-ordering fix (#1186).

  • npm run build and npm run lint passed on this source tree.
  • 105 CLI tests passed across start selection, lifecycle verbs, and ps output. Both start flags cover the initial candidate filter, restore refusal, and a rig becoming fully running after preview; older daemon responses retain their fallback behavior.
  • 303 daemon tests passed across 12 files, covering lifecycle operations, both display routes, session/inventory ordering, migration, projection, rig routes, indexes, and the existing HTTP health-budget tests. Both refused-replacement cases (final probe failure and canonical-name collision after killing the managed occupant) now retain degraded health and truthful counts.
  • The daemon set includes a passing journey with the rebuilt CLI, real daemon/SQLite, and private tmux: launch two seats, save a snapshot, stop one, exercise both start flags and assert exit 1 with rig_not_stopped, restart the daemon, launch a fresh occupant, then kill it out of band and observe degraded. Cleanup passed. The existing scenario harness is used because the YAML DSL has no seat-stop action.
  • Before the correction, four new CLI assertions failed. Daemon reproductions also failed on both refused replacements, the missing full-lifecycle summary, and the real CLI's empty candidate result. The regression suite preserves the earlier disappearing-before-kill check.
  • The unchanged fork Tests workflow at this head passed all eight jobs: build/package contents, typecheck, repository checks, all four complete package suites, and installed-package scenarios. Daemon: 14,803 passed (7 skipped, 5 todo); CLI: 4,217 passed (1 skipped); TUI: 931 passed; UI: 1,729 passed (1 skipped). Both ps-summary-stall-red.test.ts and the real seat-stop CLI journey passed in the full daemon run.
  • New upstream Tests and Portability runs report action_required and need maintainer action before they can run. The previous head's upstream daemon job had a 453.5 ms / 250 ms health-budget failure and an onTaskUpdate worker RPC timeout; the cause remains unconfirmed. The original 250 ms assertion passes locally on this head, and no timing threshold was changed.

Anything you were unsure about

Stop intent is a durable bit on the current session, written in the existing stop/audit transaction only for a standalone stop whose kill tmux confirms. If the session disappears after the live probe, normal exit/binding cleanup still runs and the exit remains unexplained. Legacy exits default to false; later status writes clear the bit, and a replacement binding disqualifies the exemption.

The summary exposes the existing unfiltered lifecycle as restoreLifecycleState alongside display lifecycleState; start uses it at both checks and falls back to the older field when absent. Restore eligibility and launch scheduling are unchanged. Per-seat diagnostics and process counts remain available; stopping every seat still yields stopped.

The CLI journey uses stub agents; native provider sessions and model calls were not exercised. Full local npm test was not rerun on this head: the earlier WSL/NTFS run had failures and is not final-head green evidence. The complete native suites passed through the repository's existing CI workflow.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • I listed the checks I ran, their results, and any checks I could not run

📝 Walkthrough

The daemon records intentional seat stops and excludes qualifying stopped seats from rig lifecycle rollups. The rig summary provides a separate restore lifecycle state. CLI output, help, and reference documentation describe stop intent and restore behavior.

Changes: Intentional Seat Stop Lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist session stop intent
packages/daemon/src/db/migrations/103_session_stop_intent.ts, packages/daemon/src/db/all-migrations.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/session-registry.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/seat-lifecycle-service.ts, packages/daemon/test/*
Migration 103 adds the intentionally_stopped session column. Explicit seat stops can set the flag, while internal replacement stops and later status updates do not retain it. Migration tests and database fixtures cover the new column.
Apply stop intent to lifecycle projections
packages/daemon/src/domain/node-inventory.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/ps-projection.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/types.ts, packages/daemon/src/routes/rigs.ts, packages/daemon/test/*
Inventory marks a session intentionally stopped only when it is exited and unbound. Lifecycle projections exclude those entries. The rig summary also exposes restoreLifecycleState; tests cover projections, inventory, and sibling states.
Use restore lifecycle state for start selection
packages/cli/src/commands/start.ts, packages/cli/test/start.test.ts, packages/daemon/test/seat-stop-cli.integration.test.ts, docs/as-built/cli-reference.md
The start command uses restoreLifecycleState when available and falls back to lifecycleState for older daemons. Tests cover restore results, restart persistence, and fresh-session clearing. The reference documents restore behavior.
Expose stop intent in CLI output
packages/cli/src/commands/ps.ts, packages/cli/src/commands/seat.ts, packages/cli/test/ps-compact.test.ts
Node output and field selection include intentionallyStopped when provided. CLI help describes stop effects, and tests cover true, false, and absent values.

Thanks, @Aschenbath. As you describe it, with this PR rig seat stop records that the stop was intended, so a running rig whose other seats are healthy no longer reads degraded in rig ps or the TUI. Real failures in other seats still count, and stopping every seat still reads stopped. Thanks also for checking that four of the new assertions fail without the fix and pass with it, and for saying plainly what you couldn't run. It's in review, and we'll reply here.

Thanks, @Aschenbath. We've reviewed this and tested it against main on a test build. A stopped on-demand seat no longer makes a healthy rig read degraded, the stopped seat and the process counts stay visible, and a crash still reads as a crash. The intent survives a daemon restart and clears on a new occupant, and the migration only adds a column.

Two changes are needed to keep this a change to how health is shown, not to what rig start or rig seat launch do:

  1. rig start. With one seat stopped on purpose and the others live, main still lists the rig for rig start --last and rig start --rigs <rig>, then reports why it can't restore it (rig_not_stopped, exit 1). With this PR the rig reads running, so rig start skips it before the preview, and the command exits 0 with no candidates. Please keep main's behaviour for both forms: list the rig, then report why it can't be restored. start.ts reads the rig's lifecycle in two places, the candidate filter and the later "already running" skip, so changing only the first leaves the second. The lifecycle information the PR already has should be enough; no new mechanism is needed. That also keeps the docs line about unchanged launch scheduling accurate.
  2. rig seat launch --fresh --stop. The stop inside a replacement isn't a final, intentional stop. If the replacement is then refused (the final probe fails, or a session with the canonical name appears), there's no replacement, and the rig should still read degraded, as on main. In this PR that stop records the intent, so the rig reads running. Please make sure that stop doesn't count as intentional, for example by not recording intent for it, and add a test for the refused case.

One small thing: please change "Closes #401" in the description to "Refs #401". It's another user's report, and we'll follow up there.

The daemon tests failed at this head in one test, test/ps-summary-stall-red.test.ts (D2: the slowest /healthz during a burst of ps and summary requests was 453.5 ms against a 250 ms budget), plus one test-runner error. We haven't worked out the cause, and we'll look at it again on the new run. After your push, we'll review the change, and then there's a final maintainer check before merge.
