Fast-forward without checking out the branch

It should be possible to fast-forward branches without actually checking them out by just changing the ref. That would speed up the command in those cases, which I assume to be the majority.

Hey @Chronial, I agree this in many cases would be easier than running git merge. Would you be intrested in providing a pull request for this behavior?
