docs(research): land the regulated-readiness source analysis (#17217) - #17231
Conversation
#17217 references this file by path, so the link was dead while the doc existed only as an untracked file in one session's working tree. 498 lines: source analysis, the AutoBot comparison, the gap ledger, the duplicate sweep, the relationship wiring, and the root-cause analysis behind the umbrella's 18 children. The source is anonymised by design and referred to only as 'the reference work'. Re-verified before committing, since committing makes a leak permanent: 0 hits for the vendor, product and predecessor-project names, and 0 URLs or domains in all 498 lines.

…#17217) The researching session revised the doc after the first commit here, so this PR carried a stale copy. Three coordinates were wrong and are now fixed -- the allow-list guard is at openai_compat.py:331 (not :313), provider selection at :361 (not :343), the anthropic equivalent at :308 (not :290), and the hybrid default at knowledge/search.py:622 (not search.py:619). Every finding held on re-verification; only the coordinates were off. Adds the citation-audit section recording both audits, including the one the new verify-citations gate caught after a manual spot-check had missed it. Verified before committing: 34/34 citations resolve, 0 identity leaks, 0 URLs.
…s a searchable fingerprint (#17217) Review of this PR found the anonymisation was weaker than the check that cleared it. My check grepped for vendor names, URLs and domains and reported zero leaks; it could not detect the actual leak, which was six verbatim quotations of the source's own copy. A distinctive full sentence resolves to its author in one web search, so quoting one identifies the source as surely as naming it -- the constraint is that the source not be identifiable, not merely unnamed. Paraphrased, quotation marks dropped and wording varied so none is a near duplicate: the action-level-authorization argument, the infrastructure-not-model thesis line, the appliance description, the reusable-automations feature term, the unfalsifiable marketing claims, and one leftover concurrency phrase. Substance is unchanged -- every analytical point, including the self-contradicting deployment timeline, survives in paraphrase. Self-reported star, fork and developer counts are kept per the owner's ruling; they are figures, not copy. Verified after the edit: 34/34 citations still resolve, 0 name hits, 0 URLs.

Correct the source-page count.
The grouped inventory totals 12 pages: one home page, three platform-layer pages, deployment options, sizing tool, open-source-foundation page, stack-review resource, and four engineering blog posts. Change 10 to 12 so the evidence basis matches the listed sources.

Reconcile the duplicate-sweep summary.
The ledger has 15 items, but the summary omits B3 and B4. A4 also produces two outcomes: one duplicate and one delta. If the summary counts outcome entries, report 16 entries: 3 duplicate outcomes, 1 item to read first, 3 delta outcomes, 7 new outcomes, 1 closed-but-incomplete outcome, and 1 covered child/comment outcome. If it counts ledger items, state how the split A4 is counted and report 15 items.

… wrapper (#17231, #17241) Folded in from two separate PRs rather than run as their own CI. Splitting them cost a full suite each for a two-line docs fix and a config block, and queue depth is what was actually delaying the fix that matters. docs/research/_index.md: main is red on test_every_research_document_is_reachable_from_its_index with 'present but unindexed'. #17231 added the document and never added its index row -- the exact drift that test was written for, missed when landing that PR. Base breakage, so every open PR inherits it. .coderabbit.yaml: the review on this PR produced seven findings and all seven were valid -- three were real bugs in code written that hour, and one exposed a detector blind spot that turned a six-site defect class into sixteen. So profile: assertive stays and no finding is suppressed. What is switched off is the per-comment wrapper: the AI-agent restatement, sequence diagrams, effort estimate, suggested labels/reviewers, and related issues/PRs. Keys checked against the published schema first, so each line is a real change and not a no-op. The 'Supported by static analysis' blocks are the other bulky part and the schema exposes no key for them.
Written by another session and left untracked because the branch freeze blocks a branch of its own. Folded in here rather than given one: the same reasoning as the last research doc, and the owner's rule that a problem found while a PR is open rides that PR. The conclusion is a negative and worth keeping as one: the inventory cannot offset development token spend -- wrong API, wrong account, and 1-3 orders of magnitude short on quota -- and integration value is near zero because adapters already exist for 5 of its 16 providers and the rest are OpenAI-SDK-compatible config. What it did expose is three governance gaps in our own LLM path, which are filed as #17248 and its children. Indexed in the same commit. A research document that is not in _index.md turns doc_sync_hook_resolves_indexer red for every open PR -- that is exactly how #17231 broke main earlier today, and adding the row here is the whole of that lesson. Verified before committing: 0 URLs, 0 domains, no source repository or author reference, and 14/14 file:line citations resolve -- one was ambiguous (manager.py:28 matches eight files) and is now qualified to services/provider_health/manager.py.
#17226) The last of the three untracked research documents, and the only one that was actually at risk: 564 lines existing in no branch, local or remote, one `git clean` from gone. The other two were already safe -- one merged via #17231, one already in this PR. Verified before committing, the same drill the previous two got: - Anonymisation. 0 source URLs; the two domain-shaped hits are our own issue link and Jan.ai, an inference backend we integrate. Two verbatim passages of the source's own copy were paraphrased -- a quoted marketing sentence is a searchable fingerprint, which is the finding that came back on #17231's review. Short generic product terms and the author's own scare-quotes stay. - Citations: 33/33 resolve. Three did not and were wrong in the ambiguous direction rather than the absent one -- two `main.py` references resolved to a 47-line file of that name, and a bare `defaults/main.yml`. All three were correct once qualified; confirmed by reading the cited lines. - Indexed in the same commit, so doc_sync_hook stays green. Its own substantive finding is already filed: ansible/roles/dependency_patching/ is fully implemented -- venv backup, 7-day retention, a rollback playbook -- and invoked by nothing (#17226).
Thinking Path
#17217 and its 18 children were filed off a research run whose evidence lives in a single
document. That document was never committed — it existed only as an untracked file in the
research session's working tree, and that session has since exited. #17217 cites it by
path, so the umbrella's entire evidence basis was one
rmor onegit cleanaway frombeing unrecoverable, and the link in the issue was already dead for every other reader.
A research session files issues and does not commit code, which is why the doc was left
untracked — correct for that session, but it leaves the artifact undelivered. Landing it is
finishing that work, not new scope.
Deliberately narrow: this PR makes the evidence durable. It ticks no acceptance criterion on
#17217 and implements none of the 18 children, so it says

Verification
Anonymisation — re-verified independently before committing, because committing makes a
leak permanent and a peer session's assurance is not evidence:
.ai/.io/.com/.dev/.co)Re-ran the name sweep after copying the file into the worktree, against the committed copy,
not the source copy.
Content unchanged: the committed file is a byte-for-byte copy of the researched
document. No edits, so nothing in the analysis is mine.
Branch hygiene: branched off current
main(2323edc58f), not a stale base. Noexisting open PR touches
docs/research/, so there was nothing to append to; no existingbranch carried this file, so there was no stale branch to revive. Branch verdict posted on
#17217 before branching.
One flag, raised rather than silently edited: the doc cites the predecessor project's
self-reported star and fork counts. That names nobody and breaks no stated rule, but it is
identifying to a reader who knows the space. Left as written — generalising it is a
one-line change on request.
