Thinking Path

Owner directive: consolidate a set of orphaned branches (closed PRs, unmerged work) into one vehicle, but only after triaging each against current origin/main's actual content -- never trusting "N commits not in main" as evidence the change is missing, since main may have solved the same problem a different way since. Full triage (with the direct-content checks, not just diff stats) is on the tracking thread; summary: 6 of 7 candidate branches were genuinely still outstanding, 1 (a 4-month-old rescued stash) was superseded/too drifted to safely revive and was left in place rather than merged or deleted, per the owner's standing rule that branch disposal is user-witnessed, not an agent's own call. A separate 3-commit security fix (CodeQL findings, still live on main) was split out and landed on its own (#17148) rather than bundled here, since it was small, zero-conflict, and the highest-value piece -- bundling it would have made this PR's review slower for no reason.

What Changed

Five branches carried, each verified against current main before merge, not just cherry-picked on faith:

One formatting fixup on top: python_filter_covers_tested_shell_wrappers_test.py needed a black reformat after 4 months of drift in the tool's own output shape.

Verification

$ python3 -m pytest repo_tests/python_filter_covers_tested_shell_wrappers_test.py repo_tests/glob_declared_reads_15900_test.py repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_guard_test.py pipeline-scripts/check_dependency_floors_test.py repo_tests/dependency_floor_strict_gate_16264_test.py repo_tests/ci_faulthandler_timeout_16516_test.py -p no:cacheprovider -q
136 passed in 24.30s

$ python3 -m pytest autobot-slm-backend/tests/services/test_code_sync_preserves_install_14275.py -p no:cacheprovider -q
15 passed in 1.04s

(Run as two separate invocations deliberately -- combining SLM-backend and repo_tests in one process trips the sys.modules cross-backend leak guard, matching pytest.ini's own #13084 note; nothing wrong with the merge, just an artifact of testing both trees together.)

Reach floors checked by direct count on the merged tree, not by trusting a local guard pass (per review guidance elsewhere tonight): hooks-path-override population 6875 against floor 6481 (headroom 7, no re-pin needed); prompt-injection-detector-strict-mode population 3240 against floor 2944 (headroom 4, no re-pin needed).

black/isort/flake8 clean on every touched .py file. No dangling references to the retired tracking modules anywhere on the merged tree (grepped fresh).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • SLM tests now run in a dedicated environment with compatible dependencies, improving test reliability.
    • Dependency checks now validate backend and SLM environments independently.
    • Changes to relevant shell wrappers and supporting scripts now correctly trigger Python test runs.
  • Changes

    • Activity tracking now supports desktop activity only; terminal, file and browser tracking paths have been retired.
  • Documentation

    • Added research on provider quota headroom and account pooling.
    • Added guidance for generating and uploading social preview cards.
  • Tooling

    • Added automated generation of branded social preview cards.

mrveiss and others added 30 commits August 25, 2026 13:14
)

Neither skills repository had a social preview, so a pasted link rendered as a grey
block with the repo name -- while both are linked from the public root landing page.

A social preview is a repository setting, not a file GitHub reads from the tree, and
no REST or GraphQL endpoint exists for it. The cards are therefore authored here,
where they get review and version history, and uploaded once through the web UI --
the same author-here / deploy-elsewhere split as site/mrveiss.github.io/. README.md
carries the two-click instruction and notes that stale previews are platform link
caches rather than failed uploads.

Palette and type follow the landing page so a pasted repository link reads as the
same property as the site. The generator makes no network call and fails on a missing
font rather than substituting one, since a substituted face would change the card
without changing the code.

The cards carry no counts, metrics or badges deliberately: a number baked into a
setting nobody revisits becomes false the first time a skill is added. They name
domains instead, which stays true as the sets grow.

Refs #16143 -- this does not close it. Two acceptance criteria are operator uploads
against live repositories and cannot be verified from a diff.
…ooks as dead code (#16466)

#16464 ported terminal_activities/file_activities/browser_activities/
secret_usage into the canonical Alembic chain (cascade-delete safety,
unrelated to whether anything writes to them). This issue was about
whether the backend code that WOULD write to three of those four tables
was ever finished. It wasn't:

- integrations/terminal_tracking.py, file_tracking.py, browser_tracking.py:
zero callers anywhere in the backend (confirmed via grep for their
public functions across the whole tree). Added in 672d17d (#873/#884,
#608 Phase 5); #873's own acceptance checklist for hooking each into a
real terminal/file-browser/browser-automation call site was never
checked off, and two of those three target files
  (integrations/file_browser.py, automation_handler.py) were never even
created -- despite #873 being closed anyway.
- knowledge/activity_types.py: contrary to this issue's own premise, this
file never wrote to the database at all -- it's Pydantic schema
classes with zero callers outside its own test (including
  DesktopActivity, which the live desktop path doesn't use either;
desktop_tracking.py builds its ORM model directly). Retired as
orphaned schema, not as a "writer module".
- The frontend counterpart (useActivityTracking.ts) was already retired
in #16443 for the identical zero-callers reason.

desktop_tracking.py -> api/vnc_proxy.py is untouched and remains the one
live path; utils/activity_tracker.py keeps only track_desktop_activity.
Retiring rather than wiring: no capability gap found (nothing reads these
four tables either, so there's no consumer waiting on the write side),
and the original feature was never actually finished for these three
modalities in the first place.

Note: autobot_shared/store_authority.py's activity_audit_trail Concept
(added on the not-yet-merged #16460/#16471 branch) will need its
write_sites list trimmed to match once both branches are in the same
tree -- flagging here since this branch doesn't have that entry yet to
edit directly.
…16466 (#16466)

This PR retires integrations/{terminal,file,browser}_tracking.py and
knowledge/activity_types.py as dead code. activity_audit_trail's Concept
still listed all four as write-sites; only utils/activity_tracker.py (its
surviving track_desktop_activity) and integrations/desktop_tracking.py ever
actually write here. Same trim as #16471's 4c91955, applied on this branch
since this is the PR that actually deletes the four files.
…16466's deletions (#16466)

#16674 (merged after this branch's last rebase) raised the floor to
2558. This branch's own retirement of browser_tracking.py,
file_tracking.py, terminal_tracking.py and knowledge/activity_types.py
as dead code drops the real count to 2555 -- verified by running the
guard's own discovery function directly, not by arithmetic, since
other merged growth already moved autobot-backend's count independent
of this deletion.

Reviewed #16466's retirement specifically, per the request to scrutinize it. Verdict: APPROVE.

Independently verified the zero-callers claim, not just re-checked 77's grep.

  1. Repo-wide text search (autobot-backend/, all of it) for terminal_tracking, file_tracking, browser_tracking, activity_types outside the modules' own files and tests: every hit is either a false positive (an unrelated activity_types parameter name in autobot_memory_graph/user_session.py), a test-timing cache file (.test_durations), historical docs, or the migration file's own explanatory comment -- zero real imports or calls anywhere.
  2. Checked for a dynamic-discovery mechanism that could reach these without a literal string match (a plugin loader, importlib/pkgutil directory scan over integrations/ or knowledge/) -- none exists in this codebase for either directory.
  3. Compared against the live sibling: desktop_tracking.py is wired via one plain function-local from integrations.desktop_tracking import track_desktop_action in api/vnc_proxy.py -- confirms this codebase's convention is direct literal imports throughout, so a text search is actually sufficient here, not just convenient.
  4. Checked the orphaned detect_secret_usage/SECRET_PATTERNS helper utils/activity_tracker.py also lost -- the only other SECRET_PATTERNS hits in the tree are an unrelated same-named constant in code_intelligence/security/patterns.py. Genuinely dead too.

Scope is precise, not over-broad: models/activities.py and the migrations are untouched -- the tables stay real (matching the issue's own framing: they exist regardless of this issue's outcome), only the dead writer code goes. All 4 corresponding test files were removed too, not left orphaned pointing at deleted modules. ACTIVITY_TRACKING_README.md was updated to document the retirement rather than left stale with now-broken import examples. utils/activity_tracker.py's remaining test suite: 3/3 pass.

Recorded decision confirmed in changelog/unreleased/16466-activity-tracking-retire.md, matching the issue's AC1 requirement.

Didn't do a deep pass on the other 4 branches in this vehicle beyond confirming they land cleanly -- #16394's carried content is my own earlier work from this session, already reviewed at merge time.

Nothing blocking.

…16394 review)

#16889's post_sync_cmd fix for the slm-backend role (5a94eca,
db0d234) added 13 net lines, mostly verbose comments duplicating
the backend role's rationale just above -- pushing the file to
727 against its grandfathered 715 ceiling. A grandfathered file may
not grow (#14236): the exemption freezes the size it was granted,
it does not license more.

Trims the new comments to point at the backend role's existing
explanation instead of repeating it, and folds the post_sync_cmd
f-string's line breaks down to fit the project's 120-col limit.
No behavior change -- same command, same rationale, fewer lines.
…5021)

repo_tests/doc_sync_hook_resolves_indexer_15845_test.py caught it in CI
(python-suite shard 11/12): this PR's own research doc landed without a
docs/research/_index.md entry, so the reachability sweep flagged it as
present but unindexed.

APPROVE. Reviewed 69c9198cfc against all three points, by reading only.

1. Index entry matches the document, checked line by line, not just its existence. The doc is docs/research/provider-quota-headroom-and-account-pooling.md (commit 1e0ed798cb). The new index line's wikilink [[provider-quota-headroom-and-account-pooling]] matches the file's stem exactly, consistent with every other row in this index (slug link, prose title differs). Checked the "Filed" framing word for word: the doc's own header says Filed: umbrella #15021 — children #15022, #15026, #15027, #15028, #15029, #15030; unrelated discovery #15031; the index entry says umbrella #15021, children #15022, #15026–#15030; unrelated discovery #15031 — the range #15026–#15030 is exactly the doc's five consecutive children, so this is an accurate compression, not a mismatch. Checked the five substantive claims in the index summary against the doc's own gap table, not against the summary's own wording: "no cross-worker headroom store" → gap #1 ("No provider-side headroom signal"); "one credential per provider per tenant (no account pool/swap)" → gap #3, verbatim; "rate-limit response headers read for GitHub-style integrations but never for LLM providers" → gap #4, verbatim; "buckets are operator-guessed env RPM never reconciled against observed limits" → gap #6, verbatim; "no hardware/KMS-rooted vault key" → gap #7, verbatim. Every claim traces to real content in the actual document.

2. Nothing else rides along. git show 69c9198cfc --stat is docs/research/_index.md | 1 +, one file, one insertion. Confirmed.

3. The guard generalizes — not satisfied by coincidence. Read repo_tests/doc_sync_hook_resolves_indexer_15845_test.py's actual detector: test_every_research_document_is_reachable_from_its_index diffs the SET of .md stems on disk under docs/research/ against the SET of wikilinked stems extracted from _index.md by a generic regex (^\| \[\[([^\]|]+)\]\]), with dedicated negative-control tests proving the diff function correctly reports both directions (unindexed-on-disk and indexed-but-missing) against synthetic fixtures unrelated to this specific document, plus a reach-floor test guarding against the sweep silently examining zero files. The docstring states the generalization intent directly: "a rule that listed those five by name would go quiet on the sixth." This is a real, generic guard that will catch the next unindexed doc the same way, not a hardcoded check that happened to fire once.

Also traced the full delta myself rather than taking "everything else is main flowing in" on faith: git log --no-merges 429e92567..b5f7f344a lists 15 non-merge commits, and every one besides 69c9198cfc is content I recognize as already-landed-and-reviewed elsewhere (my own #17150 fixes, #17157's two review rounds, #17040's original page and nit-fixes, #16825, #17154/#16354's floor re-pins, #17104, #17169) — arriving via this branch's main-merges, not new vehicle content. 69c9198cfc is the only commit authored directly on this branch.

Recording approve at b5f7f344a.

Correct the “ONLY surviving copy” claim.

docs/research/provider-quota-headroom-and-account-pooling.md is also present and indexed in this change. State which document is canonical, or remove the exclusivity claim.

Use a unique requirements file for each SLM backend action.

The slm-backend action writes and reads the same fixed path. execute_node_action passes this command to _run_ssh_cmd, which starts an independent SSH process without a per-node or per-role lock. Concurrent actions can therefore overwrite the file while another pip install reads it, causing a partial or incorrect dependency install. Use mktemp and remove the file on exit.

Bind this detector to extracted-path reach and a contrast pair.

If the regular expression stops matching, roles_by_path remains empty and the assertion passes. The existing rewrite-count assertion only proves that registry entries use the rewrite. It does not prove that this detector extracted an output path.

Add a minimum extracted-path assertion for the real registry sweep. Test the collision calculation with one shared-path fixture and one unique-path fixture.

- **The hook already exists and is unbuilt:** [`llc/api/costs.py:209-244`](autobot-backend/llc/api/costs.py#L209-L244)

**two hits: that comment and its generated OpenAPI copy**. The quota monitor does not exist.

Make source dependency discovery fail closed and recursive.

_SH_ARGUMENT only recognises tokens ending in .sh. When no token matches, _sourced_paths() skips the line instead of adding it to unresolved, so test_no_source_line_goes_unread() cannot detect that source form.

The coverage test also checks only direct wrapper sources. The current libraries do not source further files, but a later nested source would be unchecked. Add contrast fixtures for a supported nested source and an unsupported source argument, then traverse the complete source closure.

…d contract ratchet (#17174)

* fix(security): baseline the en.json 'secret' i18n label false positive (#17173)

en.json:3407's "secret": "Secret" -- a UI display label #17040's Data
Hygiene page batch introduced (#17157) -- trips detect-secrets' Secret

or the guard test locally -- reasoned both the hash and the guard's five
assertions from their own source instead, per this session's standing rule
against executing repo/tooling code locally.

* fix(security): stop the new baseline reason quoting its own trigger shape

The previous commit's SPECIFIC_REASONS entry explained the en.json false
positive by literally quoting `"secret": "Secret"` -- which is itself a
keyword-colon-quoted-value shape the Secret Keyword denylist matches,
just inside this .py file instead of the .json one. CI caught it:
"potential secret not in the audited baseline:
repo_tests/secrets_baseline_reason_entries.py:535".

Rewords the reason to describe the same key/value pair without
reproducing the colon-immediately-followed-by-quote pattern that trips
the detector, rather than adding a second baseline entry for a
self-referential finding.

* fix(ci): re-pin autobot-slm-frontend's hand-typed responses ratchet 29 -> 34 (#17040)

#17157's Data Hygiene page added 5 hand-typed response interfaces to
useAutobotApi.ts (OrphanStorageListResponse, ApprovalGateResponse,
OrphanListResponse, OrphanRepairResponse, AuditQueryResponse) for its
new orphan-storage/orphan-repair/audit calls -- none has a generated
contract yet to derive from. main has been red on this ratchet since
#17157 merged; #17153 and #17149 both inherited it by merging main,

all still match the pinned baseline exactly; responses=34, confirmed
against the pinned interface names via `git show 3febb78` (#17157's
merge commit) rather than assumed from the count alone.

* fix(ci): cover autobot-slm-frontend/src/locales/ in the python-suite filter (#17173)

The new SPECIFIC_REASONS entry this branch added names
autobot-slm-frontend/src/locales/en.json as a concrete literal --
python_filter_covers_its_guards_test.py correctly flagged it as a
newly-uncovered read, since the python-suite path filter had no entry
for that tree. Widened the filter rather than raising
MAX_UNCOVERED_READS: the guard's own module docstring says why --
"headroom under a ceiling is room for a new bypass to appear with
nothing failing" -- and #17096's docker/.env.docker entry right above
is the exact same shape already accepted as the correct fix, not the
exception.

MAX_UNCOVERED_READS itself is untouched and doesn't need to be: the
newly-covered path was never a member of UNCOVERED_READS (it was a
fresh gap, not a previously-accepted one), so closing the filter gap
removes it from the uncovered set entirely rather than requiring the
ceiling to grow to match.
…7153)

Secret Detection went red on main: rescan read 1413 findings, the committed
baseline held 1415, and en.json:2773 was an unaudited finding.

Reconciled with the documented scan/audit/strip order, not by hand-editing
hashes. 1415 - 3 + 1 = 1413:

REMOVED (3, all previously legacy-tracked)
  autobot-slm-frontend/src/locales/en.json 476cb7b9 -- 'API Keys & Tokens'
  autobot-frontend/.../ssot-config.spec.ts 1ba53c9c, 7cbdd1eb

ADDED (1)
  autobot-slm-frontend/src/locales/en.json 7e62ee8a -- 'API Keys & Tokens'

Only one of the three removals is mine. #17153 decoded & to a literal & so
the GUI stopped rendering the entity, which changed the string and therefore its
hashed_secret. The other two went stale two days ago via #16299's VNC password
fix and had simply never been reconciled -- the baseline had already drifted.

The new entry is labelled is_secret=false with a specific reason. Confirmed
rather than assumed: plain SHA1 of 'API Keys & Tokens' reproduces the new hash
exactly, and SHA1 of the pre-#17153 spelling reproduces the one it replaces, so
the audited verdict carries over because the value is the same display heading.

Verified before pushing: 1413 entries (floor 1383), zero unreasoned, zero stale
specific reasons, frozen legacy-keys hash unchanged, nothing unlabelled.
…17142)

Population measured 6891 after #17153 and #17184 landed -- three new counting
files between them. Floor 6488 left a gap of 403 against an allowance of 401,
so reach_declarations_test went red on every PR touching repo_tests.

Re-derived with the guard's own _scanned_files() rather than taking the number
from the failure message. New floor is population minus the unchanged growth
allowance, the convention this file already documents.

This is the #17142 shape a third time: #17153 and #17184 each fit alone against
the 6889 allowance, the pair did not, and neither could see the other's
contribution. Headroom after this re-pin is ONE file, so the next PR adding two
counting files breaks it again.

Note the direction: a reach floor rising makes the guard stricter -- it demands
more reach, not less. This is not a ceiling being raised to make a test pass.

repo_tests/reach_declarations_test.py: 174 passed.

Two main-unblocking fixes consolidated in (owner's call)

Added 8c813710dc and effa913987, originally opened as #17189 and folded here instead.

1. .secrets.baseline reconciliation. Secret Detection is red on main: rescan reads 1413, the committed baseline holds 1415, and autobot-slm-frontend/src/locales/en.json:2773 is an unaudited finding. #17153 decoded & to a literal & in "aPIKeysAmpTokens": "API Keys & Tokens" — the key name trips the Secret Keyword denylist, so the display string is what gets hashed, and changing it moved the hash. Reconciled with the documented scan/audit/strip order: 1415 − 3 + 1 = 1413. Only one of the three removals is #17153's; the other two went stale two days ago via #16299 and had never been reconciled.

Hashes confirmed independently rather than taken from the tool: sha1("API Keys & Tokens") reproduces the new value exactly, and sha1("API Keys & Tokens") reproduces the one it replaces.

2. hooks-path-override reach floor, 6488 → 6491. Floor 6488 left a gap of 403 against a 401 allowance, so every PR touching repo_tests went red — including this one's predecessor.

Re-derived on this branch, not on main: population here is 6885, not 6891, because the consolidation nets out six counting files. That distinction is the whole point — a floor measured on one tree and landed from another is the #17142 mistake the declaration's comment already records twice, and it would have passed CI while being wrong. Headroom here is 7 files.

A reach floor rising makes the guard stricter; this is not a ceiling raised to pass a test.

Verified before pushing: 179 tests across reach_declarations_test.py and secrets_baseline_reasons_guard_test.py; baseline 1413 entries, zero unlabelled, none carrying line_number, above the 1383 floor.

Independent review of the two consolidated commits — approve, one correction

Reviewed by an agent that did not author them, read-only. The commits were reviewed at their original head on #17189; they are byte-identical here apart from the reach-floor comment, which was rewritten for this branch.

The check that mattered most, confirmed: sha1('API Keys & Tokens') reproduces 7e62ee8a07aaaeb03be8a824b49f02fc7ecc6fda and sha1('API Keys & Tokens') reproduces 476cb7b9c1683329fb0baf710c66a4677617c50b, both exactly. No fabricated identifier in a secrets baseline.

Also verified independently: line 2773 is a genuine i18n display label under setupWizardView, so is_secret: false is correct; 1415 − 3 + 1 = 1413 reconciles exactly with zero null is_secret and zero line_number fields across all 1413; repo_tests/secrets_baseline_legacy_keys.json is untouched so the frozen-snapshot test is unaffected; and the 1ba53c9c removal orphans nothing, because SPECIFIC_REASONS keys it only for .env.docker and docker/.env.docker — nine instances of that hash exist, eight untouched.

On the reach floor it confirmed the direction from _reach.py itself: floor is a minimum required population, so raising it demands the sweep prove it reaches more of the tree. Stricter, not weaker.

Correction

My claim that #16299 made those two entries stale "two days ago" is wrong. 88616ad6ee is dated 2026-09-18 22:33, so three calendar days before today. Non-blocking and it changes none of the reconciliation, but the number was stated as fact and was not one.

What the review explicitly did not do

It did not execute the guard's own discover(), so the population figure is corroborated by an independent git ls-tree count (6860 by extension, consistent with the documented extensionless-shell remainder) rather than exactly reproduced. It said so rather than implying full proof — which is the distinction that matters, since the floor arithmetic rests on that number.

Worth noting the population differs by tree: 6891 on main, 6885 here. The floor was re-derived on this branch for exactly that reason.

Verdict: approve. Waiting on CI at effa91398.

secrets_baseline_reason_entries.py (#17134); the branch still carried it
inline. Taking the branch here would have reverted that refactor. Took main
and PORTED the branch's one real change into the new module -- a reason that
cited 'line 242' for _BASIC_AUTH_URL_RE, which now sits at line 262.
- repo_tests/python_filter_covers_tested_shell_wrappers_test.py: add/add, and
the two sides differ only in black's line-wrapping. Took main.

Net residue actually carried by this PR: the dependabot uv bump (anyio
4.12.1->4.14.2, httpcore2/httpx2 2.10.0->2.12.0), pypdf 6.18.1->6.19.0 in two
manifests, and the ported reason reword. All upgrades; no downgrade.
