refactor(shared): extract the model pricing table so it can grow (#15860) - #15910
Conversation
) `autobot_shared/ssot_constants.py` is grandfathered at 958 lines and sat at exactly 958. #15860 needs two price entries — the Anthropic provider default and Opus 4.6, both unpriced, so every cost event for them accrued zero — and #14236 is explicit that a grandfathered exemption freezes the size granted rather than licensing more. ssot_constants.py: 958 -> 915 ceiling: 958 -> 915 (both mirrors, same commit, #14498) The pricing table is the right thing to move: it is what keeps growing (22 model constants remain unpriced) and it is cohesive. **Not re-exported from `ssot_constants`, deliberately.** The table is keyed on the model-name constants defined there, so a re-export makes the two modules import each other. I built that version first and it fails on *both* import orders, which is why the five importers were repointed instead. Only five files actually import it. A text search reports fourteen; nine of those mention it in a docstring or comment. Separated by AST rather than by grep, because "fourteen importers" would have made this look like a much larger change than it is: constants/model_constants.py repointed (and re-exports, so services/pricing_refresh.py and services/llm_cost_tracker.py are unaffected) llc/services/budget.py repointed llm_shared/tiered_routing/cost_router.py repointed Verified the chain resolves to one object rather than two: `constants.model_constants` and `autobot_shared.model_pricing` return the same dict, and every importer imports cleanly. The new module is deliberately **not** added to the known-large list. A file that starts life with an exemption is how that list got to 497 entries. Mirror invariant checked as well as the ratchet: 497 entries in both, zero differing, zero where the recorded ceiling disagrees with the file's real length. Discovered and filed while doing this: #15908 — nothing in the repo catches a duplicate key in a config dict. I introduced one in this very table (the same two models priced twice), and black, isort, flake8, the size ratchet and the full suite all passed. Python takes last-wins silently, so a duplicate with *different* values is a live money bug with no failure mode.
Applied Black, isort, and autoflake to match code-quality checks. Triggered by workflow auto-fix-formatting.yml.
…ve autoflake (#15860) Twelve checks failed with `cannot import name MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS from constants.model_constants`, and the cause is not what it looks like. My import was correct. **The auto-format bot deleted it** — commit `378db87bff`, "Auto-fix: code formatting", one line removed: -from autobot_shared.model_pricing import MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS A re-export is indistinguishable from an unused import: the name is imported and never referenced in that module, which is exactly what autoflake removes. So the branch that passed locally could not pass in CI, and the file I verified was not the file that ran. **The fix is to have no re-export**, rather than to protect one with a noqa. "Extract without re-export and repoint the importers" was the ruling; keeping a re-export in `model_constants` was a shortcut that let me claim two of the five needed no change. Both of those two — `services/pricing_refresh.py` and `services/llm_cost_tracker.py` — are real importers and are now repointed. constants/model_constants.py re-export removed entirely llc/services/budget.py repointed llm_shared/tiered_routing/cost_router.py repointed services/pricing_refresh.py repointed services/llm_cost_tracker.py repointed Nothing imports the symbol from `ssot_constants` or `model_constants` any more. Verified by importing all five modules rather than by reading them, which is what caught `llm_cost_tracker` still relying on the re-export after it was gone. Also corrects an operator-facing message in `pricing_refresh.py` that told the reader to update the table "in ssot_constants.py" — true when written, false after the move, and the kind of stale referent that sends someone to the wrong file at the moment they are trying to fix pricing.

Add the #15908 duplicate-key AST check and tests.
MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS has 43 imported keys that currently resolve to 43 distinct values, but no check covers this table. Add reach reporting, a duplicate fixture, a contrast fixture, and a mutation test that fails when the duplicate is reintroduced. Python otherwise keeps the last value for colliding keys.

…hold (#15912) Review finding on #15910, and it is about what this PR's *name* claims after it lands rather than a defect in it. `ssot_constants` holds three model-price tables. This extraction moves one: MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS 43 entries moved here MODEL_COSTS_PER_1M_TOKENS 13 entries stays MODEL_PRICING_PER_1K_TOKENS 10 entries stays `MODEL_COSTS_PER_1M_TOKENS` is the **same unit and the same schema**, and it overlaps this table on **9 models**. Before the extraction all three sat in one file, so anyone editing a price saw them together. They no longer do, and a module called `model_pricing` reads as *the* home for model pricing — so the move is correct and manufactures a false SSOT signal. The docstring now names the other two and the overlap. Verified rather than relayed: the overlap is 9, not the 6 first reported, and all nine **agree today** — compared by value, not by eye, which is the only way to say it. Nothing enforces that agreement; consolidation is #15912. Also corrects my own count in passing. I made the 1K table 8 entries with a regex requiring the value to open on the same line; it is 10. An instrument reporting fewer than exist, again, in a message about instruments reporting fewer than exist. The docstring now gives **circularity** as the reason for having no re-export, with autoflake (#15911) as a secondary note. The cycle is structural — the table is keyed on names defined in `ssot_constants` — and holds whether or not a formatter ever touches the file. The autoflake behaviour is contingent on a bot's configuration, so it is the weaker reason to record in code.

…mitigates it (#15912) Two review findings, one of which is that my own mitigation comment was false. THE ADJACENCY CLAIM WAS WRONG TWICE. The comment said an alias pair "could diverge from their dated twins without failing anything. Keeping them adjacent is the whole mitigation." :112 ANTHROPIC_CLAUDE_SONNET4 3.00 / 15.00 :172 ANTHROPIC_CLAUDE_SONNET4_SHORT 3.00 / 15.00 Sixty lines and ~50 local-model entries apart. The aliases are adjacent to each OTHER; each is far from the twin the sentence names. And the mechanism it asserted is proximity -- which is the exact thing #15912 was filed about: "the drift is currently prevented by attention, and #15910 removes the thing attention was relying on -- proximity." A fix that reinstates attention as its own safeguard has not fixed it. Replaced with a check. `alias_pairs()` derives `{alias -> canonical}` from the `_DATED` / `_SHORT` suffix convention on the constant NAMES, so a fifth alias added tomorrow is covered without anyone remembering -- a hand-written map would be an enumeration, which is the other half of the same complaint. Four pairs derived, floored, with a fixture proving the comparison would catch a divergence: the tree agrees today, so a check comparing nothing passes everything else. diverge an alias from its dated twin 1 failed (was: undetectable) REACH: `ast.walk` rather than `tree.body` in `discover_pricing_tables`. A table assigned as a class attribute is still a table, and this codebase does put pricing names at class level (`calculators.py:41`, `:154`). Zero such tables today; the docstring promised "any name in any file" and module-level-only delivered less. Same shape as #15902's floor counting files opened rather than files parsed -- a docstring claiming more reach than the code has. 10 passed. Ceilings unchanged.
…ive disagreements (#15912) (#15918) * fix(pricing): one literal price table, and a guard that found three live disagreements (#15912) The issue described three tables. There were eight, and they did not agree. WHAT WAS ACTUALLY WRONG. The guard was written before the fixes and found: deepseek-r1 0.55/2.19 deepseek_source._BASELINE 0.0 /0.0 model_pricing.MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS gpt-4o 5.0 /15.0 ssot.MODEL_PRICING_PER_1K_TOKENS (x1000) 2.5 /10.0 three other tables gpt-3.5-turbo 1.5 /2.0 ssot.MODEL_PRICING_PER_1K_TOKENS (x1000) 0.5 /1.5 three other tables `deepseek-r1` is `LOCAL_DEEPSEEK_R1`, a locally-hosted model priced 0.0/0.0; the paid one is `DEEPSEEK_R1_API` = `deepseek-r1-api`. The baseline charged API rates against the local model's id, so one string meant "free" or "$0.55/1M" depending on which table a consumer reached for. The other two are stale prices in the per-1K table -- plausible numbers, and the only table its consumers read. My own issue said per-1K "holds the same prices divided by a thousand". That is true of Claude 3 Opus, which I checked, and false of the two above, which I did not. WHAT CHANGED. `MODEL_COSTS_PER_1M_TOKENS` and `MODEL_PRICING_PER_1K_TOKENS` are now comprehensions over the canonical table, defined beside it. The key rename (`input`/`output` -> `prompt`/`completion`) lives in the comprehension, visibly. `ssot_constants` keeps neither literal; `constants/model_constants.py` re-exports both from their new home with `# noqa: F401`, since a re-export is what an unused import looks like to autoflake (#15911). The four Anthropic short aliases from `MODEL_COSTS` are folded into the canonical table. `claude-sonnet-4` and `claude-sonnet-4-20250514` are one model under two ids, both in use, both agreeing -- so both are keys, adjacent, with a note that an alias pair is the one drift the guard cannot see. Two entries in per-1K are not models and cannot be derived from a table of models: `default` (the fallback `calculators.py:102` reads for an unknown model) and `ollama`. Kept explicit. WHY SHAPE-DISCOVERY. A grep for the baselines naming the canonical table found four. There are five -- `vertexai_source.py` carried no pointer, so nothing searching for the pointer could find it. The guard recognises pricing tables by shape, so a table added under any name in any file is covered. Verified by mutation (baseline 7 passed): re-key deepseek back to the local id 1 failed change one canonical price 1 failed break key normalisation 1 failed break the per-1K derivation (drop /1000) 1 failed drop the `default` fallback entry 1 failed autoflake deletes the re-export 1 failed The fourth of those SURVIVED the first version of the guard, at 3 passed. The AST sweep sees literal tables, and consolidation had turned per-1K into a comprehension -- so the fix moved the risk from "two literals drift" to "the derivation is wrong" and left the guard behind it. Runtime checks on the derived views close that; a guard that stops where its subject moved to is not a guard. The table floor drops 8 -> 6 and that is the work, not an accommodation: two literals became derived views, and a derived view cannot drift. The two cases are indistinguishable from the number alone, so the reason is written at the constant. 93 passed across the pricing, budget and cost-accrual suites. * Auto-fix: code formatting Applied Black, isort, and autoflake to match code-quality checks. Triggered by workflow auto-fix-formatting.yml. * fix(pricing): both file-size ceilings, in both directions (#15912) The ratchet failed on one file over and one file under, in the same commit, and the pairing is the argument for it being bidirectional: analytics_llm_patterns.py 1016 / ceiling 1015 — my +1 line ssot_constants.py 896 / ceiling 915 — the two tables I removed Only recording both distinguishes "the work shrank the file" from "the sweep stopped seeing part of it". A one-directional ratchet would have accepted the 896 silently. The over-ceiling one is not fixed by raising the ceiling. My import block was four lines (comment, import, blank, alias assignment) where the file already sat exactly at its limit; it is now two, importing under the name the module uses: from autobot_shared.model_pricing import MODEL_COSTS_PER_1M_TOKENS as MODEL_COSTS 1016 -> 1013, and the ceiling follows down to 1013 rather than up to 1016. A ceiling raised to fit a line I chose to add would spend a grandfathered file's remaining headroom on my own convenience. `MODEL_COSTS` still resolves, 49 entries. Ratchet: 5,241 files scanned, 497 grandfathered, all live and at size. Guard still 7 passed. * fix(pricing): check the alias pairing instead of claiming the layout mitigates it (#15912) Two review findings, one of which is that my own mitigation comment was false. THE ADJACENCY CLAIM WAS WRONG TWICE. The comment said an alias pair "could diverge from their dated twins without failing anything. Same shape as #15902's floor counting files opened rather than files parsed -- a docstring claiming more reach than the code has. 10 passed. Ceilings unchanged. * fix(pricing): cite symbols, and update BOTH ratchet mirrors (#15912) Two independent CI failures, both mine. LINE-NUMBER CITATIONS. Three comments cited `calculators.py:41`, `:102` and `:154`. All three were correct when written, which is the argument rather than a mitigation: a line number is invalidated by an edit to code it does not describe, and nothing connects the two. Now `TokenTracker.DEFAULT_COSTS`, `TokenTracker.track_usage` and `CostCalculator.MODEL_PRICING`. Caught by `comment_line_number_citations_test.py` (#15896). Swept my other three open branches for the same shape while here: none. Fixing it also caught a second error the guard could not see. My first replacement named `CostEstimator.MODEL_PRICING`; the class at that line is `CostCalculator`. **A symbol citation is checkable and a wrong one is a lie the reader can catch** -- which is the other half of why symbols beat line numbers, and I got it wrong on the way to getting it right. RATCHET MIRRORS. `scripts/python_file_size_known_large.py` had the lowered ceilings and `repo_tests/python_file_size_ratchet_baseline.py` did not. Both entries, both files, same commit (#14498). Worth recording why my own check missed it: I verified with `check_python_file_size.py --audit-ceilings`, which reads ONE mirror and passed. A verification that consults one of the two things that must agree cannot detect them disagreeing -- the same shape as a denominator drawn from its numerator, in the tool I chose to confirm with. 46 passed across the pricing guard, the citation guard and the ratchet guard. --------- Co-authored-by: github-actions[bot] <github-actions[bot]@users.noreply.github.com> Co-authored-by: github-actions[bot] <41898282+github-actions[bot]@users.noreply.github.com>
Thinking Path
autobot_shared/ssot_constants.pyis grandfathered at 958 lines and sits atexactly 958. #15860 needs two price entries — the Anthropic provider default
and Opus 4.6, both unpriced, so every cost event for them accrued zero — and
#14236 freezes the size a grandfathered file was granted rather than licensing
more. There is no slack, and the minimum honest addition is two lines.
Four ways out, and the other three are worse:
file, and the lines most available to cut are always the explanatory ones —
trading recorded reasoning for a line count.
every model string twice: a size fix that creates a silent correctness
problem.
keyed on the name constants defined in
ssot_constants, so the two modulesimport each other. I built it; it fails on both import orders.
So: extract, and repoint the importers. This is deliberately its own PR ahead
of #15860's fix, so that one stays the two-line change it should be.
Single-issue rationale: this is a prerequisite refactor for #15860 with no
behaviour of its own, and folding it into that PR would mix a 7-file move with
a 2-line pricing fix.
What Changed
autobot_shared/model_pricing.py(new) holdsMODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENSandimports the model-name constants from
ssot_constants. Imports flow one way andnothing imports back.
Five importers, not fourteen. A text search finds fourteen files; nine
mention it only in a docstring or comment. Separated by AST, because "fourteen
importers" would have made this look like a far larger change than it is:
constants/model_constants.pyllc/services/budget.pyllm_shared/tiered_routing/cost_router.pyservices/pricing_refresh.pyservices/llm_cost_tracker.pyAn earlier revision kept a re-export in
constants/model_constants.pyandclaimed two of the five needed no change. The auto-format bot deleted that
import — a re-export is indistinguishable from an unused import to autoflake —
and twelve checks failed on
cannot import name MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENS.The fix is not to protect the re-export but to have none: all five importers now
name
autobot_shared.model_pricingdirectly, which is what "extract withoutre-export" meant in the first place. Nothing imports the symbol from
ssot_constantsormodel_constantsany more, verified by grep.Verification
constants.model_constantsandautobot_shared.model_pricingreturn the same dict (A is B→ True), so there-export is not a second copy.
check_python_file_size.py --audit-ceilings— CI's own invocation — passes:5232 files scanned, 497 grandfathered, all live and at size.differing, zero where the recorded ceiling disagrees with the file's real
length.
The new module is not added to the known-large list. A file starting life
with an exemption is how that list reached 497 entries.
Limitations
object with the same contents; this PR is a move plus three import lines. What
it is verified against is import resolution and the ceiling invariants, not
pricing behaviour — that is fix(llc): the default model is missing from the pricing table, so dollar budgets never accrue #15860's.
MODEL_PRICING_PER_1M_TOKENSindocstrings that now describe a table living elsewhere. Left alone: rewriting
nine docstrings to say the same thing about a new path is churn, and the
symbol name is unchanged.
Discovered, filed not fixed
#15908 — nothing in this repo catches a duplicate key in a config dict. I
introduced one in this very table while working #15860 (the same two models
priced twice) and black, isort, flake8, the size ratchet and the full suite all
passed. Python takes last-wins silently, so a duplicate with different values
is a live money bug with no failure mode. I caught it by grepping.
