Thinking Path

knowledge_tasks._run_indexing_subprocess shelled out to
"scripts/utilities/index_all_man_pages.py". Two independent faults in one
line:

  • The path is relative to the process working directory, which is not the
repo root under Celery, systemd, or a test runner.
  • There is no scripts/utilities/ at the repository root under any cwd. The
script is real — it lives at
    autobot-infrastructure/shared/scripts/utilities/index_all_man_pages.py.

So the task returned its failed dict on every run, and system knowledge was
presumably never refreshed by it.

The reporting compounded it. On non-zero exit the code passed the subprocess's
stderr — truncated to 500 characters — up as a generic knowledge-refresh error.
"The indexer is not where we looked" and "the indexer ran and failed" produced
the same message, so the cause was invisible in logs.

Same defect class as #15845, where a hook pointed at an indexer that had never
been created: a wired path resolving nowhere, degrading quietly instead of
failing loudly.

Single-issue rationale: one caller, one path, and the reporting fix is what
makes the path fix observable — separating them would land a correct path whose
failure mode is still unreadable.

What Changed

  • autobot-backend/tasks/knowledge_tasks.py — MAN_PAGE_INDEXER, anchored
to PATH.PROJECT_ROOT. This module already imports PATH elsewhere, so this
reuses the existing convention rather than adding a second way to find the
root. Absence is checked before shelling out and reported by path.
  • repo_tests/man_page_indexer_path_resolves_15853_test.py (new) — 4 tests.

Verification

4 passed. 4 mutants, 4 caught, each with its replacement count asserted
before running:

Mutant Result
Restore the cwd-relative literal in the subprocess.run call 1 failed
Drop the existence check 1 failed
Anchor to a bare relative Path instead of the project root 2 failed
Point the constant at a directory that does not exist 1 failed

Two properties of the guard worth stating, because both are places this kind of
test usually goes wrong:

It reads the path out of the module via the AST rather than restating it. A
test carrying its own copy of the path passes exactly when the module's copy
moves alone — which is the drift it exists to catch.

It asserts the constant is what gets executed. Defining an anchored path and
then passing a literal to subprocess.run would satisfy every other assertion
while changing nothing.

The module documents the old cwd-relative path in a comment directly above the
constant that replaced it, so the guard strips comments before matching.
Otherwise "the bad literal is gone" is false while the code is correct — the
explanation of a fix sits nearer to it than anything else does, and is made of
the exact string the check looks for.

Limitations

  • The refresh is not demonstrated to index anything. The issue's fourth
criterion asks for before/after evidence that man pages are actually indexed.
That needs a host with man pages and a reachable knowledge base; I have
verified the path resolves and that the task can now find and execute the
script, not that a run produces facts. Saying so rather than ticking it.
  • The guard resolves the path by reading string literals out of the constant's
expression, so it would need updating if that expression stopped being a
chain of / operands on literals. It fails loudly rather than silently in
that case — no path segments found.

Closes #15853

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved man-page indexing reliability by locating the indexer from the repository root, regardless of the current working directory.
    • Added clear failure handling and error reporting when the indexer is unavailable or exits unsuccessfully.
    • Ensured indexing uses the resolved indexer location and reports indexing statistics on success.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the documented location of the man-page indexer.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for path resolution, error handling, subprocess execution, output parsing and task delegation.

…cwd (#15853)

`_run_indexing_subprocess` shelled out to
`"scripts/utilities/index_all_man_pages.py"`. That path is relative to the
process working directory -- which is not the repo root under Celery, systemd or
a test runner -- and there is no `scripts/utilities/` at the repository root
under any cwd. The script is real; it lives under
`autobot-infrastructure/shared/`. So the refresh returned its `failed` dict on
every run and system knowledge was presumably never refreshed by this task.

Two faults, fixed separately because they fail differently:

**The path.** Now `PATH.PROJECT_ROOT / "autobot-infrastructure" / ...`, using the
`PATH` constant this module already imports elsewhere rather than introducing a
second way to find the root.

**The reporting.** The old code passed the subprocess's truncated stderr up as a
generic knowledge-refresh error, so "the indexer is not where we looked" and
"the indexer ran and failed" produced the same message. Absence is now checked
first and reported by path.

Same defect class as #15845, where a hook pointed at an indexer that had never
been created: a wired path resolving nowhere, degrading quietly rather than
failing loudly.

The guard reads the path out of the module under test via the AST rather than
restating it, so moving the constant alone fails -- a test carrying its own copy
passes exactly when the thing it checks has drifted. It also asserts the
constant is what gets executed: defining an anchored path and then passing a
literal to `subprocess.run` would satisfy every other assertion while changing
nothing.

The module documents the old cwd-relative path in a comment directly above the
constant that replaced it, so the guard strips comments before matching. Without
that, "the bad literal is gone" is false while the code is correct -- the
explanation of a fix sits nearer to it than anything else and is made of the
string the check looks for. Same reason #15724's publish-contract guard strips
them.

4 mutants, 4 caught, replacement counts asserted: restoring the cwd-relative
literal in the subprocess call; dropping the existence check; anchoring to a
bare relative `Path` instead of the project root; and pointing the constant at a
directory that does not exist.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The man-page indexer now resolves from PATH.PROJECT_ROOT, validates the file, reports named failures, parses results, and runs through a shared task module. The refresh task delegates to this module. Static tests verify the path and delegation.

The refresh task now runs the repository-root-anchored man-page indexer and reports missing entry points clearly. The change is mergeable with low risk, though two focused tests could better protect the missing-file and caller-delegation behaviors from future regressions.

Add contrast fixtures for the AST detector.

_indexer_path_expression is tested only against the current module. Add one valid fixture and one invalid MAN_PAGE_INDEXER declaration. This proves that the detector accepts the required form and rejects a broken form.

As per path instructions, “Every detector needs a contrast pair: a fixture that SHOULD trip it and one that should not.”

Prove that the existence guard runs before the subprocess.

This assertion checks only that MAN_PAGE_INDEXER.is_file() exists in the source. An implementation that calls subprocess.run first and checks the path afterwards still passes this test. Assert AST ordering and the early return, or patch subprocess.run and verify that a missing indexer never invokes it.

…eiling (#15853)

The path fix made `knowledge_tasks.py` grow from 912 to 937 lines, and 912 was
its recorded ceiling exactly. #14236 is explicit that a grandfathered exemption
freezes the size the file was granted and does not license more, so raising it
was not available.

Moved `run_indexing_subprocess` and `parse_indexing_output` to
`tasks/man_page_indexing.py` rather than trimming the fix down to fit. The two
belong together anyway -- one runs the indexer, the other reads its numbers back
out of stdout -- and neither has another caller. `knowledge_tasks` now imports
the entry point and nothing else about man-page indexing.

    knowledge_tasks.py:  912 -> 862 lines
    ceiling:             912 -> 862

Both mirrors moved in this commit, as #14498 requires:
`scripts/python_file_size_known_large.py` and
`repo_tests/python_file_size_ratchet_baseline.py`. The ratchet fails on
under-ceiling drift as well as over, so leaving it at 912 after the file shrank
would have been red in the other direction.

`subprocess` and `sys` went unused in `knowledge_tasks` once the helpers left,
and are removed; the new module is not added to the known-large list, because
it is not grandfathered and should not be.

The guard follows the code and gains a test that `knowledge_tasks` delegates
rather than regrowing its own copy of the path -- a second copy there would be
both the drift this guard exists to catch and a ceiling breach.

3 mutants re-run after the extraction, 3 caught: the subprocess taking a
cwd-relative literal; the caller regrowing its own reference to the script; and
the constant losing its project-root anchor.

Assert the delegation call, not only the import.

These assertions pass if knowledge_tasks.py imports run_indexing_subprocess but continues to use another local invocation. Parse the caller function and assert that it calls run_indexing_subprocess(). Add a negative caller fixture that must fail the detector.

Review — the fix is correct, including the part that's easy to fake. Two small gaps.

Both of the things worth attacking here check out, so I'll show the working rather than just assert it.

The path fix is cwd-independent, not merely cwd-independent-looking. MAN_PAGE_INDEXER anchors to PATH.PROJECT_ROOT, which is ssot_config.PROJECT_ROOT → autobot_shared.paths.project_root(). That resolves by walking up from __file__, not from the process cwd — with AUTOBOT_PROJECT_ROOT outranking it and a documented single-walk that deliberately stops at a checkout root so a worktree doesn't resolve to the main tree. So this works from Celery, systemd, pytest or anywhere else. The distinction you flagged — a fix that works from the current cwd versus one that works from any — lands on the right side, and a test running from the repo root would not have distinguished them.

The extraction is clean. run_indexing_subprocess and parse_indexing_output have no other callers: the ten _run_indexing_subprocess hits elsewhere are an unrelated async function in api/codebase_analytics/ that takes (task_id, root_path, source_id). Name collision, not a caller.

Your guard question — it fails on a second copy appearing, not only on the first disappearing. test_the_caller_delegates_rather_than_carrying_its_own_path asserts both directions: the import must be present and "index_all_man_pages.py" not in caller. Regrowing the invocation in knowledge_tasks fails it. test_the_subprocess_invokes_the_anchored_path covers the sharper version of the same trick — defining an anchored constant and then passing a literal to subprocess.run would satisfy every other assertion while changing nothing.

Ratchet claims verified exactly: knowledge_tasks.py is 862 lines and both mirrors record 862 — pinned to the real size, not padded. Lowered from 912 rather than raised. The new 86-line module is in neither known-large list, correctly.

# Severity Where Finding
1 Low docs/system-state.md:833 Still documents the path this PR proves has never existed
2 Low man_page_indexer_path_resolves_15853_test.py The delegation check enumerates two files

1 — the documentation still asserts the broken path

2. **Enhanced Man Page Indexer** (`scripts/utilities/index_all_man_pages.py`):

That is the exact string the module's own comment calls out — "there is no scripts/utilities/ at the repository root at all". The code is fixed and the document that would have told a reader where the script lives still points at the path that never resolved.

Worth fixing here rather than filing: it's one line, it's the same wrong string the PR exists to remove, and a stale doc is how the next person re-derives the original bug. Grep for index_all_man_pages finds five files — the module, this PR's guard, docs/system-state.md, hardcoded_values_baseline.txt, and a skipped test — so the sweep is small and already done.

2 — the delegation guard enumerates rather than discovers

_MODULE and _CALLER are two hard-coded paths, so a second copy of the invocation is caught in knowledge_tasks.py and nowhere else. A new tasks/other_task.py shelling out to the indexer with its own literal passes every assertion in the file.

Today that's theoretical — only the module names the script in executable code. Which is what makes it cheap:

def test_only_the_indexing_module_names_the_script():
    named = [p for p in (REPO_ROOT / "autobot-backend").rglob("*.py")
             if "index_all_man_pages" in p.read_text(encoding="utf-8")]
assert named == [_MODULE], f"the indexer script is named outside {_MODULE.name}: {named}"

Same principle the file already applies within knowledge_tasks — a second copy is the failure, not just a missing first one — applied to the tree instead of to one file.

One note, not a finding

_resolved_indexer() joins the segments onto the test's REPO_ROOT (Path(__file__).parents[1]), while the module joins them onto project_root(). So test_the_indexer_exists_where_the_task_looks_for_it proves the file exists relative to the checkout, and "PATH.PROJECT_ROOT" in expression proves the module names the right anchor — but nothing proves the two resolve to the same directory. Under AUTOBOT_PROJECT_ROOT they need not.

I don't think that's worth closing. The test deliberately avoids importing the backend, and importing paths.project_root() alone to compare would be reasonable but adds an import for a case an operator has to create on purpose. Recording it so the limit is known rather than assumed.

No blocking findings. Both are follow-ups, and #1 is small enough to ride here.

The docstrings are doing real work in this one — "The path is read out of the module under test, never restated here. A test carrying its own copy of the path passes when the module's copy moves alone" is the reason this guard is worth having, and the comment-stripping in _module_source() exists because the module documents the old literal directly above the constant that replaced it, which would make "the bad literal is gone" false while the code is correct. Both are the kind of thing that only gets written by someone who tried the naive version first.

`docs/system-state.md:833` documented the indexer at
`scripts/utilities/index_all_man_pages.py` — the exact path this PR's module
comment records as never having existed. The code is fixed and the document
telling a reader where the script lives still pointed at the path that never
resolved.

Same defect one surface over: a wired reference to a path that resolves
nowhere, degrading quietly. A reader following the doc would have concluded the
script was missing rather than misfiled.

Found by b9 in review. The path it now names is verified present.
