fix(test): render role defaults against the inventory globals they now use - #15712
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe test resolvers now load inventory-wide variables, support dotted Jinja references, and use them for role defaults and manifest paths. Role path defaults use direct interpolation. Requirement exclusions use repository-relative paths. ChangesManifest variable resolution

…ive from the SSOT (#15714, #15632) All twelve python-suite shards were red on Dev_new_gui. #15704 made three role defaults derive code_source_dir from autobot.base_dir, which lives in inventory/group_vars/all.yml rather than beside them, and two repo_tests resolve role defaults against the role's own mapping only. autobot_shared_symlink_relative_13539_test died at collection with UndefinedError: 'autobot' is undefined. Globals are now in scope for lookup while only the role's own keys are rendered -- seeding AND resolving them fails differently, because group_vars/all.yml builds role_backend_active from ansible's `groups` magic var, which exists only inside a real play. ansible_manifest_resolution reported two backend manifests as no longer installed. Its _VARIABLE matched a bare identifier, so a dotted reference matched NOTHING -- it has never understood autobot.base_dir and only worked while the default was a literal -- and its scope carried no inventory vars at all. Both fixed. The role defaults also drop the ~ concatenation for plain interpolation; ~ is only needed inside default(), where the value is a filter argument. Two further reds surfaced from the same work: backend_gpu_torch_gating_test pinned code_source_dir to the literal. Its point is that the value is declared ONCE rather than repeated inline, and that still holds -- but the equality check re-forbade #15632's fix. It now asserts the default is declared, does not restate the install root, and derives from autobot.base_dir. ansible_manifest_resolution reached 625 lines. The 600 limit is not raised: inventory_globals moves to repo_tests/ansible_inventory_scope.py, taking its documents as an argument so the caller keeps one parse. 599. Separately, and not caused by any of the above: requirement_files() matched its exclusions against ABSOLUTE path parts, and one is ".worktrees". A worktree per task is the mandated workflow here, so every path carried that part, every file was excluded, and the walk-reach floor fired with "reached only 0 requirements manifests (floor 30)". Verified pre-existing by running the base version of the file, which fails identically. CI never saw it because CI checks out elsewhere; it only fails where the work happens, as a refused push on a clean tree. Now matched relative to the scanned root: 0 -> 34. Filed as #15714. 13 tests pass across the two ansible suites locally.

Support recursive dotted variables in the inventory scope
inventory_globals() flattens only one mapping level, but _VARIABLE accepts dotted names of any depth. References such as infrastructure.hosts.backend therefore remain unresolved. _resolve_manifest() cannot derive the manifest path, and derived_bindings() omits that binding. Recurse through mappings, or restrict _VARIABLE to one-level names.

Add a contrast pair for _VARIABLE.
The contrast suite does not exercise _substitute with dotted names. Add one case where {{ autobot.base_dir }} resolves and one near-match or literal that does not resolve. The existing _reached checks already measure discovered entries, not findings.

Reuse the parsed document set.
Line 468 calls ansible_documents() after _scopes() has already parsed the tree. derived_bindings() calls _scope_for() for each installation, so this performs repeated YAML reads and parses. Pass one cached document tuple through the scope builders, and build the scopes once.

Retain an assertion for the resolved path.
These assertions pass for {{ autobot.base_dir }} and {{ autobot.base_dir }}/wrong. They only prove that the variable name appears and that the old literal is absent. The test must also prove the base_dir/code_source contract.

Single-issue rationale: this is a hotfix for a red on
Dev_new_guithat is blocking every Python PR. It carries no issue of its own by design — the follow-up it exposed is filed separately as #15713, and batching anything else into a base-unblocking fix would delay it for no CI saving.Thinking Path
All twelve
python-suiteshards are failing onDev_new_guiwith:This is a regression from #15704 (mine). That PR made
roles/backend/defaults/main.ymlderivecode_source_dirfromautobot.base_dir— which lives ininventory/group_vars/all.yml, not beside it._resolve_defaultsin that test renders each mapping against itself, so the reference had nothing to resolve against and collection died on a file that is perfectly valid ansible. It reached base because #15704 changed only ansible paths, and the workflow's path filters skip
python-suitefor those. Arepo_testthat reads ansible files is invisible to a filter keyed on what a change touches — that is the follow-up, filed as #15713.What Changed
_resolve_defaultsnow renders against the role mapping plus the inventory globals, which is what ansible does: group_vars are in scope for every play. The scoping is the load-bearing half, and my first attempt got it wrong. Seeding the globals and resolving them fails differently —
group_vars/all.ymlbuildsrole_backend_activefrom ansible'sgroupsmagic var, which exists only inside a real play, so that version traded oneUndefinedErrorfor another. Globals are therefore available for lookup while only the role's own keys are rendered.Verification
Rendered both role defaults standalone against the real files:
roles/backend/defaults/main.ymlcode_source_dir→/opt/autobot/code_source, resolved throughautobot.base_dirroles/slm_manager/defaults/main.ymlcode_source_dirThat simulation is exactly the check that would have caught the original break, which is why it is in the commit rather than described here only.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Second half, found after the first fix landed
Ten of twelve shards went green; the last two were a different resolver hitting the same root cause.
ansible_manifest_resolutionreported two backend manifests as no longer installed, for two reasons:_VARIABLEmatched a bare identifier only, so a dotted reference matched nothing. That resolver has never understoodautobot.base_dir— it worked only while the default was a plain literal. The role defaults also drop the
~concatenation for plain{{ autobot.base_dir }}/code_source. The~form is needed insidedefault(), where the value is a filter argument; in a bare value it is noise, and the simpler form is what the rest of the tree writes. Two consequential reds followed.
backend_gpu_torch_gating_testpinnedcode_source_dirto the old literal — its point is that the value is declared once rather than repeated inline, which still holds, but the equality check re-forbade #15632's fix; it now asserts the default is declared, does not restate the install root, and derives from the SSOT. Andansible_manifest_resolutionreached 625 lines: the 600 limit is not raised,inventory_globalsmoved to its own module and takes its documents as an argument so the caller keeps one parse.A pre-existing bug this exposed — #15714
requirement_files()matched its exclusion list against absolute path parts, and one entry is.worktrees. A worktree per task is the mandated workflow, so every path carried that part, every file was excluded, and the glob returned zero.I confirmed it was not mine by running the base version of that file, which fails identically. CI never saw it because CI checks out to a path with no excluded component — it fails only where the work actually happens, and it presents as a refused push on a clean tree, which is how a repository trains people toward
--no-verify.The walk-reach floor is what made it findable: "reached only 0 requirements manifests (floor 30) — it has stopped reading." Bound to reach rather than findings, so an empty walk could not pass as green. Exclusions now match relative to the scanned root: 0 → 34.
