Thinking Path

_TIMEOUT = float(os.getenv("SOME_VAR", "30")) at module level raises ValueError at IMPORT on a malformed value -- for a module a service imports at startup, that is a service that will not start, with a traceback pointing at a cast rather than at the setting.

Re-derived the population myself with an AST pass rather than trusting the issue's count: module-level assignments (direct children of the module body, not inside a function or class) whose value is a bare int(...)/float(...) call wrapping os.getenv(...) specifically, tests and .claude/ excluded. That gives 43 sites across 31 files, not 47. The 4-site gap is explained by code that moved since the issue was filed (one of the three sites named in services/slm_frontend_build.py was already fixed) plus minor scope-boundary differences; both counts land in the same place once measured the same way.

Triaged by consequence, per the issue: startup-path service modules first (a bad value there is a dead service), standalone operator-run scripts last (the operator sees the crash immediately, in their own terminal). Every site got a real decision:

  • 36 converted to autobot_shared.env_utils's env_int/env_float (crash-safe, no clamp) where no EnvVarSpec declares a bound, or env_int_clamped/env_float_clamped (crash-safe, bounded) where one does.
  • 7 recorded, not converted, each with a reason that says why a bare cast belongs there rather than merely noting it exists (see repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_allowlist.py):
    • 6 are standalone Redis-DB-selector maintenance scripts (analyze_redis_db0.py, debug_redis_fields.py, redis_final_analysis.py, fix_kb_dimensions.py, fresh_kb_setup.py, migrate_codebase_to_chromadb.py). A clamped reader is the wrong fix here, not merely unapplied: silently falling back to a different logical database on a malformed value would have the script inspect or migrate the wrong data, which is worse than a crash the operator sees immediately.
    • 1 is the knowledge-base MCP server (autobot_knowledge_mcp/server.py), which is packaged independently (its own pyproject.toml, dependency list, and console-script entry point) and does not declare autobot_shared as a dependency. Converting it needs a packaging decision, tracked in a new issue.

While editing these files I found 11 more sites of the identical crash-at-import shape, just wrapped in an outer max(N, int(os.getenv(...))) (already partly mitigated by a floor, but the floor only applies once the parse has already succeeded -- a malformed value still crashes before max() ever runs). Converted all 11 to the same clamped readers, preserving the existing floor as min_v.

What Changed

  • Converted 36 direct int(os.getenv(...))/float(os.getenv(...)) sites and 11 max()/min()-wrapped sites (across autobot-backend, autobot-slm-backend, autobot_shared) to the crash-safe readers in autobot_shared/env_utils.py. Bounds match a declared EnvVarSpec range= in autobot_shared/env_registry*.py where one exists (AUTOBOT_CHANNEL_STREAM_MAX_ENTRIES, AUTOBOT_CHANNEL_STREAM_TTL_SECONDS); everywhere else the existing floor (if any) is preserved as min_v and no new bound is invented.
  • The two mirrored agent files (autobot-slm-backend/slm/agent/agent.py, health_collector.py) and their ansible/roles/slm_agent/files copies were changed identically, keeping detect-agent-code-drift.sh green.
  • Added repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_test.py + repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_allowlist.py: an AST-based guard that fails on a new module-level bare cast outside the 7-entry allowlist, shrink-only (MAX_BARE_ENV_CASTS = 7, down from the measured starting population of 43), following the split shape of npm_test_scripts_run_in_ci_test.py / npm_test_scripts_allowlist.py.
  • Several files sat exactly on a recorded python_file_size_known_large.py ceiling; every edit there stayed net-zero lines (a removed now-unused import os offsetting a new env_utils import, or a same-module import merge) so no ceiling needed retuning.
  • Filed two follow-ups for what this PR deliberately does not cover: tech-debt(mcp): decide how autobot_knowledge_mcp gets a crash-safe env reader #15709 (the MCP server's packaging decision) and tech-debt(config): sweep the os.environ.get-wrapped module-level env casts #15691 left out of scope #15710 (the same sweep for the os.environ.get(...) spelling, a same-sized population bug(config): 47 module-level env casts can crash a service at import on a malformed value #15691 did not size or triage).

Verification

  • git status/ast.parse on every touched file; wc -l against each file's recorded ceiling in scripts/python_file_size_known_large.py (all match exactly, no retuning needed).
  • diff confirms both mirrored-pair directories (slm/agent/ vs its ansible copy) stay byte-identical.
  • Re-implemented the guard's AST classifier standalone and ran it against the full checkout: 3107 non-test .py files scanned, exactly 7 bare casts found, matching BARE_ENV_CASTS and MAX_BARE_ENV_CASTS exactly.
  • Cross-checked every touched line against pipeline-scripts/hardcoded_values_baseline.txt: none of the edited lines correspond to an existing tracked finding, so no baseline entry needed retuning.
  • git push's pre-push hook ran pytest on every affected test file (context_overflow_test.py, process_offload_test.py, remote_approval_routing_test.py, remote_approval_test.py, live_service_probe_test.py, and the new env_var_bare_cast_test.py) -- all pass.

Closes #15691

Model Used

Claude Opus 5 (1M context)

Single-issue rationale: this is a 43-site sweep plus a new shrink-only guard across 31 files; it is already at the upper end of what one honest review pass can carry. The two issues in the same scope were spun OUT of it rather than into it -- #15709 needs a packaging decision before its one site can be converted at all, and #15710 is a separate ~60-site population using os.environ.get, a different AST shape this issue's own definition never covered. Batching either would have made the diff less reviewable, not the CI cheaper.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Refactor

    • Standardised environment-variable configuration parsing across backend, SLM, and shared services.
    • Added validation and bounds for selected retry, timeout, polling, retention, and worker settings while preserving existing defaults.
    • Standardised timestamp generation for agent events.
  • Tests

    • Added automated checks to detect and limit direct environment-variable casts.
    • Documented approved exceptions and enforced ongoing coverage and population limits.

…15691)

A module-level int(os.getenv(...)) / float(os.getenv(...)) raises
ValueError at import on a malformed value, taking down whatever service
imports the module rather than failing at the setting's point of use.
Re-derived the population with an AST pass (43 top-level sites across 31
files matching the issue's own os.getenv-only definition; broader
variants -- os.environ.get and max()/min()-wrapped casts -- are tracked
separately). Converted 36 to autobot_shared.env_utils's env_int/env_float
(crash-safe) or env_int_clamped/env_float_clamped (crash-safe, bounded to
match a declared EnvVarSpec range= where one exists). Also converted 11
max(N, int(os.getenv(...)))-shaped sites found opportunistically while
editing these files: same crash risk, already partly mitigated by a floor
that only applies once the parse has already succeeded.

7 sites stay bare, recorded with a reason in the new
repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_allowlist.py: 6 are standalone operator-run
Redis-DB-selector scripts where a silent clamp risks inspecting or
migrating the wrong database, and 1 (the knowledge-base MCP server) is an
independently packaged tool with no autobot_shared dependency to import
(#15709 tracks that packaging decision).

repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_test.py adds a shrink-only guard: a new bare
module-level cast outside the allowlist fails CI, and the population
count is recorded so a future reader can tell draining from re-growth.

The two mirrored agent files (slm/agent/agent.py, health_collector.py)
and their ansible/roles/slm_agent/files copies changed identically.

#15710 tracks the same sweep for the os.environ.get spelling, deliberately
left out of this PR's scope.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change replaces direct module-level environment casts with shared parsing helpers across backend, SLM, agent, and shared modules. It adds bounded parsing where required and introduces tests that detect unallowlisted bare casts and enforce a shrinking population.

Changes

Environment parser migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend configuration parsing
autobot-backend/api/*, autobot-backend/config/*, autobot-backend/constants/*, autobot-backend/chat_history/*, autobot-backend/code_intelligence/*, autobot-backend/knowledge/*, autobot-backend/llc/*, autobot-backend/services/*
Backend modules now use shared integer, float, and clamped parsers. Existing defaults remain unchanged. Bounded settings now enforce configured limits.
SLM and shared configuration parsing
autobot-slm-backend/api/*, autobot-slm-backend/services/*, autobot-slm-backend/slm/agent/*, autobot-slm-backend/ansible/roles/slm_agent/files/slm/agent/*, autobot_shared/live_service_probe.py
SLM and shared modules now use typed environment helpers. Mirrored agents use shared timestamp and environment utility modules.
Bare environment cast guard
repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_allowlist.py, repo_tests/env_var_bare_cast_test.py
New tests scan tracked Python files for module-level bare casts, validate allowlist entries, and enforce a non-growing population ceiling.

This change makes environment parsing safer, but the new regression guard can miss newly introduced bare casts when multiple findings share a target key. Preserve unique occurrence identity before merging so the guard reliably enforces its allowlist.

max/min/abs/round do not change when the cast raises: the floor applies to

Review pass — verified independently, one gap closed.

Verified rather than taken on trust

The population. The issue said 47; this PR says 43. I re-ran my own AST pass over origin/Dev_new_gui — module-level assignments whose value is a bare int()/float() wrapping os.getenv, tests and .claude/ excluded — and got 43 sites across 31 files, matching exactly. The issue's number was overcounted; the PR's is right.

Bounds actually match the registry. AUTOBOT_CHANNEL_STREAM_MAX_ENTRIES declares range=(1, 1000000) and now reads env_int_clamped(..., 1000, 1, 1000000); AUTOBOT_CHANNEL_STREAM_TTL_SECONDS declares range=(60, 2592000) and reads env_int_clamped(..., 86400, 60, 2592000). That is the criterion about the registry documenting something nothing enforces, met precisely.

Mirrored pairs. slm/agent/agent.py and health_collector.py are byte-identical to their slm_agent/files copies — diff clean, so detect-agent-code-drift.sh has nothing to fire on.

The six Redis exemptions are right, and for the stated reason. _DB_MAIN = int(os.getenv("AUTOBOT_REDIS_DB_MAIN", "0")) selects a logical database index. A clamped fallback there would send fix_kb_dimensions.py or migrate_codebase_to_chromadb.py — both of which write — at the wrong database silently. Crashing in the operator's terminal is the safer failure, and the allowlist says so in a group comment rather than deferring to a bare label.

The gap I closed

The guard read node.value directly, so it matched int(os.getenv(...)) but not max(1, int(os.getenv(...))) — and this PR converted eleven sites of exactly that second shape. As written it protected the population it drained while leaving the sites it fixed free to come back. That is the failure this repo keeps finding in its own checks (#15667, #15696), reappearing inside the fix for a different one.

max/min/abs/round do not change when the cast raises: the floor applies to the parsed number, not to the parse. The classifier now looks through them.

Re-measured with the widened classifier: still exactly 7 sites, the same allowlisted set, so MAX_BARE_ENV_CASTS is unchanged.

The pre-push hook then caught something worth recording: a contrast case asserted max(1, int(os.getenv(...))) → None, encoding the narrow behaviour as intended. It was doing its job — the fix is to change the contract it pins, not to work around it. That case now expects "int", with two more added: a min()/float pair, and max(1, some_other_call(...)) which must still be ignored so the widening cannot degrade into matching any wrapper.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Enforce shrink-only identity, not only population size.

The ceiling permits a PR to remove one recorded cast and add a different bare cast to BARE_ENV_CASTS; all three baseline tests then pass with seven findings. Retain a fixed baseline of permitted keys, or compare against the merge-base baseline, and assert that the current keys are a subset of it.

As per path instructions, “Census and baseline mappings here are shrink-only AND bidirectional: a new finding fails, and a STALE entry fails just as loudly.”

…ion (#15691)

The conversion was net-zero everywhere except here: code_sync.py sits
exactly on its recorded ceiling of 6091, and the new env_utils import took
it to 6092. There is nothing to merge it into and os is still used twenty
times, so the import cannot be offset by dropping another.

The ceiling is not raised. The comment above the self-update watch
constants explained that the poll floor is 1s and why -- and min_v=1 now
states the floor in the code, so the prose only has to carry the reason.
Tightened from four lines to three; the busy-loop rationale is intact.

A 6091-line module needing a comment trimmed to accept a one-line import
is the real finding, and it belongs to the grandfathered-file decomposition
work rather than to this sweep.
…15691)

An attribute target was detected and then DISCARDED. _assigned_names kept
only ast.Name, so settings.timeout = int(os.getenv(...)) reached the
classifier, matched, and yielded no key -- the guard saw the defect and
accepted it. Attribute targets now report under their dotted name;
subscripts and tuples, which have no stable name, report under an explicit
marker rather than vanishing.

A parse failure read as "no casts here" while the file still counted
toward the reach floor, so an unallowlisted cast could sit behind a green
sweep in a file nothing had read. Reach now counts files PARSED, and
unparseable files are named by their own test instead of absorbed.

Transparent wrappers scanned positional arguments only. A keyword argument
is evaluated before the wrapper is called, so max(0, key=int(os.getenv(...)))
raises at import exactly as a positional cast does. This was a hole in the
widening added earlier in this PR.

Each fix carries its contrast pair. 22 tests pass locally.

CodeRabbit pass — 4 findings: 3 applied, 1 rejected.

Applied

An attribute target was detected and then discarded. _assigned_names kept only ast.Name, so settings.timeout = int(os.getenv(...)) reached the classifier, matched, and yielded no key — the guard saw the defect and accepted it. That is the worst failure available to a guard: not missing a case, but finding one and dropping it. Attribute targets now report under their dotted name; subscripts and tuples, which genuinely have no stable name, report under an explicit marker rather than vanishing.

A parse failure read as "no casts here" while the file still counted toward the reach floor. So the floor could be satisfied by files nothing had read, and an unallowlisted cast could sit behind a green sweep — the floor defeated on its own terms. Reach now counts files parsed, and unparseable files are named by their own test instead of absorbed.

Transparent wrappers scanned positional arguments only — and that was a hole in the widening I added earlier in this PR, so the review caught my own fix being half-done. A keyword argument is evaluated before the wrapper is called, so max(0, key=int(os.getenv(...))) raises at import exactly as a positional cast does.

Each carries its contrast pair, per the repo's own rule. 22 tests pass.

Rejected — already covered by the pair

The swap scenario: remove one recorded cast, add a different one, and all three baseline tests pass at seven findings.

They do not. The two tests are complements and together force set equality:

  • test_every_bare_cast_is_allowlisted asserts measurement.keys - BARE_ENV_CASTS is empty → the newly added site is unaccounted → fails
  • test_allowlist_entries_are_live_and_carry_an_issue asserts BARE_ENV_CASTS - measurement.keys is empty → the converted site's entry is stale → fails

A swap trips both, not neither. The finding reads the ceiling test in isolation, where it would be right — MAX_BARE_ENV_CASTS alone does only count. Adding a separate fixed baseline would duplicate an invariant the pair already enforces, and a second place to record the same set is a second place for it to drift.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve unique occurrence identity in the guard.

_target_key maps distinct targets to the same value. For example, get_settings().timeout and get_other_settings().timeout both become timeout, while all subscript, tuple, list, and starred targets become <unnamed-target>. Measurement.keys then reduces findings to a set of path::name keys. A new cast can leave the key set unchanged, and a stale allowlist entry can remain live through another occurrence.

Use a unique full-target or occurrence key. Preserve occurrence counts when comparing the measurement with BARE_ENV_CASTS. Add a contrast fixture with two distinct non-name targets.

As per path instructions, “Census and baseline mappings here are shrink-only AND bidirectional: a new finding fails, and a STALE entry fails just as loudly.”

_target_key and the Measurement comparison so distinct full targets or
occurrences retain unique identity instead of collapsing to attribute names or
<unnamed-target>; preserve occurrence counts when comparing against
BARE_ENV_CASTS. Add a contrast fixture with two distinct non-name targets, and
ensure the census/baseline check fails for both newly introduced findings and
stale allowlist entries.
