security(llc): GitHub webhook authentication fails open when secret unset #9657
Closing — vulnerable code does not exist on Dev_new_gui
Verified against the current Dev_new_gui tree:
autobot-backend/llc/api/github_webhooks.py — does not exist
grep -rn "GITHUB_WEBHOOK_SECRET\|x-hub-signature\|github_webhook" autobot-backend/ --include=*.py → no matches anywhere in the backend
There is no GitHub webhook handler in the codebase, so there is no fail-open authentication path to harden. The snippet in this issue references code that was never merged (the security review likely scanned an un-merged branch).
The fail-closed requirement is not lost — it is folded into #9625 (GitHub PR ↔ work item linking), which is the issue that will actually introduce webhook handling. The handler built there must:
return 503 when GITHUB_WEBHOOK_SECRET is unset (fail closed),
return 401 when the x-hub-signature-256 header is missing,
verify the HMAC signature before parsing the body.
Closing as obsolete/not-applicable. Reopen if webhook code lands without these guards.
