[CRITICAL] Complete Authentication and RBAC System #744

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

Overview

Complete the authentication and RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) system to enable secure multi-user access and file protection.

Priority: Critical
Effort Estimate: 14 days
Impact: Enabling secure multi-user access and file protection
Dependencies: None
Risk Factors: High complexity in migrating existing guest-access endpoints

Background

From analysis report 2026.01.31-22.05.49:

  • Guest-access fallback currently allows too much default access
  • Incomplete RBAC implementation blocks several critical security features
  • Authentication system is ~90% complete but not strictly enforced

Subtasks

1. Implement Strict JWT Validation (4 days)

Owner: Backend/Security
Prerequisites: Review src/auth_middleware.py

Steps:

  • Remove Guest Fallback: Disable the guest role fallback in get_user_from_request
  • Enforce Token Presence: Require a valid JWT or Session ID for all non-public endpoints
  • Validate Session TTL: Ensure Redis-backed sessions correctly expire

2. Complete RBAC Role Mapping

  • Define all role permissions (admin, user, guest)
  • Implement role-based endpoint protection
  • Add role hierarchy support

3. Testing Requirements

  • Unit tests for token validation logic
  • Integration tests for authenticated API calls
  • Test expired token rejection

Success Criteria

  • Unauthorized requests return 401
  • Expired tokens are rejected
  • All protected endpoints require valid authentication
  • RBAC roles correctly restrict access

Phase 1 Complete: Guest Role Removal ✅

    Summary

Completed Phase 1 of Issue #744 - removed the guest role security vulnerability from the authentication system.

    Changes Made (commit 843817a)

    • ❌ Removed "guest" from SYSTEM_ROLES in role.py
    • ❌ Removed guest from _get_default_role_permissions() in both security_layer.py and enhanced_security_layer.py
    • 🔒 Updated all .get("role", "guest") fallbacks to require explicit roles:
      • backend/api/conversation_files.py - Raises 403 if role not assigned
      • backend/api/audit.py - Raises auth error if role not assigned
      • src/auth_middleware.py - Raises auth error if role not assigned
    • 🔒 Updated worker_node.py to require explicit user_role in task payloads
    • 🔄 Changed SSO default role from "guest" to "user"
    • 🔐 Enhanced RBAC middleware to return 401 Unauthorized for unauthenticated users (vs 403 Forbidden for unauthorized)

    Security Impact

    • BREAKING CHANGE: Guest role completely removed
    • Unauthenticated requests now rejected instead of silently assigned guest permissions
    • Proper HTTP status codes: 401 for missing auth, 403 for insufficient permissions

    Next Steps

    • Phase 2: Audit remaining authentication pathways
    • Phase 3: Add JWT/session validation improvements
    • Phase 4: Complete RBAC database integration

Phase 5 Complete: Authentication Applied to API Endpoints ✅

    Summary

Successfully applied Depends(get_current_user) authentication to all API endpoints across the backend.

    Commits

    Changes Applied

    • Added from src.auth_middleware import get_current_user imports to all API router files
    • Applied current_user: dict = Depends(get_current_user) parameter to endpoint functions
    • Added Issue #744: Requires authenticated user. docstring comments
    • Used check_admin_permission for admin-level endpoints (analytics, log patterns, etc.)

    Files Modified (121 total)

    Key modules updated include:

    • backend/api/knowledge_mcp.py - 9 MCP endpoints
    • backend/api/batch_jobs.py - All batch job endpoints
    • backend/api/codebase_analytics/endpoints/*.py - All analytics endpoints
    • All other API router files in backend/api/

    Next Steps

    • Phase 6: Add RBAC permission decorators for fine-grained access control
    • Phase 7: API testing with authenticated requests
    • Phase 8: Documentation updates

Phase 6 Complete: RBAC Permission Decorator System ✅

    Summary

Created a comprehensive Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system with fine-grained permission decorators for API endpoints.

    Commit

    New Module: src/auth_rbac.py

    Permission Categories (40+ permissions):

    • API Core: api.read, api.write, api.admin
    • Knowledge: knowledge.read, knowledge.write, knowledge.delete, knowledge.manage
    • Analytics: analytics.view, analytics.export, analytics.manage, analytics.logs
    • Agent: agent.view, agent.execute, agent.manage, agent.terminal
    • Workflow: workflow.view, workflow.create, workflow.execute, workflow.manage
    • Files: files.view, files.download, files.upload, files.delete, files.manage
    • Security: security.view, security.audit, security.manage
    • Admin: admin.users.*, admin.config.*, admin.system
    • MCP, Batch, Sandbox, Shell permissions

    Roles Defined:

    • admin - Full system access
    • operator - Execute operations, no management
    • analyst - Analytics and viewing focus
    • editor - Content creation and modification
    • user - Standard read/basic access
    • readonly - View only

    Usage Pattern:

    from src.auth_rbac import Permission, require_permission, require_role

    @router.get("/analytics/export")
    async def export_analytics(
        current_user: dict = Depends(get_current_user),
        _: bool = Depends(require_permission(Permission.ANALYTICS_EXPORT)),
    ):
        ...

    @router.get("/admin/users")
    async def list_users(
        current_user: dict = Depends(get_current_user),
        _: bool = Depends(require_role(Role.ADMIN, Role.OPERATOR)),
    ):
        ...

    Features

    • Integrates with existing SecurityLayer for audit logging
    • Single-user mode bypass support
    • Backward compatible with existing check_admin_permission
    • Convenience functions for common checks

    Next Steps

    • Phase 7: Apply RBAC decorators to additional sensitive endpoints
    • Phase 8: API testing with role-based authentication
    • Phase 9: Documentation updates
