chore(ai-stack): resolve googleapis-common-protos version conflict with ChromaDB #4061

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

After downgrading protobuf to 3.20.0 for ChromaDB compatibility, googleapis-common-protos package now has an unmet version requirement.

Issue

ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently account for all packages installed.
This behaviour is the source of the following dependency conflicts:
googleapis-common-protos 1.74.0 requires protobuf<8.0.0,>=4.25.8, but you have protobuf 3.20.0

Context

  • ChromaDB <=1.5.5 requires protobuf <=3.20.x (opentelemetry compatibility)
  • googleapis-common-protos 1.74.0 requires protobuf >=4.25.8
  • Current version: protobuf 3.20.0 (satisfies ChromaDB)
  • googleapis-common-protos is used by Google Cloud SDK features

Current Status

  • ChromaDB working: ✓ (functional with 3.20.0)
  • googleapis-common-protos warning: ⚠️ (version mismatch logged)
  • System operational: ✓ (warning doesn't break functionality)

Options

  1. Keep current setup: protobuf 3.20.0 (ChromaDB works, warning logged)
  2. Upgrade ChromaDB: Wait for ChromaDB >1.5.5 with protobuf 4.x support
  3. Find compatible version: googleapis-common-protos with protobuf 3.20.x support

Recommendation

Monitor for ChromaDB v2.0+ release with protobuf 4.x compatibility, then upgrade both together.
