File Naming Audit - Remove Temporary/Versioned File Name Patterns #35

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

🎯 Objective

Audit the entire codebase for files using temporary or versioned naming patterns (_fix, _v2, _optimized, etc.) and rename them to permanent, descriptive names following the new File Naming Standards.

📊 Current Policy (CLAUDE.md)

Forbidden patterns:

  • _fix, _fixed, _fix2
  • _v2, _v3, _version2
  • _optimized, _improved, _better
  • _new, _old, _legacy
  • _temp, _tmp, _backup
  • _copy, _draft
  • _updated, _revised, _refactored
  • Date-based suffixes: _20250113, _jan2025

Exception: Test files may use _unit_test.py, _integration_test.py (indicates test type, not version)

🔍 Audit Scope

Search for files with forbidden patterns across:

  • Python files (*.py)
  • TypeScript files (*.ts)
  • Vue files (*.vue)
  • Configuration files
  • Script files
  • Documentation files

Exclude:

  • venv/
  • node_modules/
  • archives/
  • reports/

✅ Success Criteria

  • Complete file audit performed across entire codebase
  • All violations identified and documented
  • Renaming plan created with proper permanent names
  • All imports/references updated for each renamed file
  • Files renamed atomically with import updates
  • Old files removed from repository
  • Tests pass after all renames
  • No regressions introduced

🚀 Implementation Process

Step 1: Audit

# Search for forbidden patterns
find . -type f \
  \( -name "*_fix*.py" -o -name "*_v2*.py" -o -name "*_optimized*.py" \
  -o -name "*_new*.py" -o -name "*_temp*.py" -o -name "*_backup*.py" \
  -o -name "*_copy*.py" \) \
  -not -path "*/venv/*" \
  -not -path "*/node_modules/*" \
  -not -path "*/archives/*" \
  -not -path "*/reports/*"

Step 2: Analyze Each File

For each file found:

  1. Understand its purpose
  2. Check if it's the canonical version or duplicate
  3. Determine proper permanent name
  4. Identify all files that import/reference it

Step 3: Rename Systematically

For each file:

  1. Choose permanent name (descriptive, follows conventions)
  2. Update all imports/references
  3. Rename file
  4. Test
  5. Commit atomically (rename + all updates together)

Step 4: Verify

  • Run full test suite
  • Check all imports work
  • Verify no broken references
  • Remove old/duplicate files

📋 Tracking Template

For each violation found:

**File**: `path/to/file_v2.py`
**Issue**: Uses forbidden `_v2` pattern
**Purpose**: [What the file does]
**Canonical**: [Is this the canonical version? Yes/No]
**New Name**: `path/to/proper_name.py`
**References**: [List of files that import this]
**Status**: [ ] Renamed, [ ] References updated, [ ] Tested

📚 References

🏷️ Labels

refactor, code-quality, technical-debt, cleanup

⏱️ Estimate

1-2 weeks (depending on violations found)

📊 Success Metrics

  • Files renamed: [TBD after audit]
  • Imports updated: [TBD after audit]
  • Tests passing: 100%
  • Violations remaining: 0

    🚨 CRITICAL UPDATE: Knowledge Base Files Analysis

    ⚠️ DO NOT DELETE knowledge_base_backup.py without extracting features first!

    Key Finding

    The backup version contains 4 unique features NOT present in canonical version:

    1. PDF text extraction (pypdf)
    2. DOCX text extraction (python-docx)
    3. Batch directory document processing
    4. KB librarian agent integration

    Files Analysis

    Active Implementation (70+ imports):

    • src/knowledge_base.py (71K) - ✅ CANONICAL production version
    • Class: KnowledgeBase
    • Used by: 70+ files across entire codebase

    Unused Implementation with Unique Features (0 imports):

    • src/knowledge_base_backup.py (21K) - ⚠️ HAS UNIQUE FEATURES
    • Class: AutoBotKnowledgeBase (different name!)
    • Used by: NONE (not being imported anywhere)

    Compatibility Shim (0 imports):

    • src/knowledge_base_optimized.py (837 bytes) - ✅ SAFE TO DELETE
    • Just imports, no unique logic

    Revised Strategy: Extract to Reusable Utilities

    Per user requirements:

    "any knowledgebase functionality must be made in to reusable code"

    New Approach:

    1. Create: src/utils/document_extractors.py

      • Reusable DocumentExtractor class
      • PDF extraction method
      • DOCX extraction method
      • Text file extraction method
      • Batch directory processing
      • Can be used by ANY component (not just knowledge base)
    2. Enhance: src/knowledge_base.py

      • Add add_document_from_file() method
      • Add add_documents_from_directory() method
      • Add get_librarian() method
      • Uses reusable DocumentExtractor
    3. Delete: After features extracted

      • src/knowledge_base_optimized.py (safe - just imports)
      • src/knowledge_base_backup.py (safe - all features extracted)

    Unique Features Being Preserved

    1. PDF Extraction

    async def extract_from_pdf(file_path: Path) -> str:
        reader = PdfReader(file_path)
        return "\n\n".join([page.extract_text() for page in reader.pages])

    2. DOCX Extraction

    async def extract_from_docx(file_path: Path) -> str:
        doc = DocxDocument(file_path)
        return "\n\n".join([p.text for p in doc.paragraphs])

    3. Batch Directory Processing

    async def add_documents_from_directory(
        directory_path: Path,
        file_types: List[str] = ['.pdf', '.docx', '.txt', '.md']
    ) -> Dict[str, Any]:
        # Process all documents in directory...

    4. KB Librarian Integration

    def get_librarian(self):
        from src.agents.kb_librarian_agent import KBLibrarianAgent
        return KBLibrarianAgent(knowledge_base=self)

    Deliverables Updated

    New Reports:

    • Feature Analysis: /reports/knowledge_base_feature_analysis.md
    • Consolidation Plan: /reports/knowledge_base_consolidation_plan.md

    Includes:

    • ✅ Complete feature comparison matrix
    • ✅ Reusable DocumentExtractor utility design
    • ✅ Enhanced KnowledgeBase methods
    • ✅ Comprehensive testing strategy
    • ✅ Step-by-step implementation checklist
    • ✅ CLAUDE.md policy compliance (preserve ALL features, make reusable)

    Estimated Effort

    Original Plan (just rename/delete): 2-3 hours
    Revised Plan (extract + consolidate + test): 3.5-5.5 hours

    Breakdown:

    • Phase 1 (Document Extractors): 1-2 hours
    • Phase 2 (Enhance KnowledgeBase): 1 hour
    • Phase 3 (Testing): 1-2 hours
    • Phase 4 (Cleanup): 30 minutes

    Success Criteria

    ✅ All unique features preserved
    ✅ All features made reusable (not locked into knowledge_base.py)
    ✅ No functionality lost (all 70+ imports still work)
    ✅ Clean separation of concerns
    ✅ Comprehensive test coverage

    This approach ensures we don't lose valuable document processing capabilities while making them available to the entire codebase, not just the knowledge base component.
