Phase 2b: Migrate agent.py to @with_error_handling (5 endpoints) #27

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

Overview

Migrate all endpoints in backend/api/agent.py from manual try-catch blocks to centralized @with_error_handling decorator.

Priority: 🟡 MEDIUM - Basic Agent API
Parent Issue: #14

Scope

File: backend/api/agent.py
Endpoints: 5 endpoints (all need migration)
Exception Handlers: 3 total exception blocks
Estimated Batches: 2 batches (3+2 endpoints)

Migration Status

  • Batch 76: First 3 endpoints (POST /goal, POST /pause, POST /resume)
  • Batch 77: Final 2 endpoints (POST /command_approval, POST /execute_command)

Endpoints to Migrate

All 5 endpoints need migration:

  1. ⏳ POST /goal - execute_goal (line 31)
  2. ⏳ POST /pause - pause_agent (line 182)
  3. ⏳ POST /resume - resume_agent (line 208)
  4. ⏳ POST /command_approval - approve_command (line 236)
  5. ⏳ POST /execute_command - execute_command (line 290)

Migration Pattern Analysis Needed

Initial analysis suggests:

  • Fewer exception handlers (3 total) compared to other agent files
  • Some endpoints may not have explicit error handling
  • Need to analyze each endpoint to determine Simple vs Mixed Pattern

Decorator config (expected):

@with_error_handling(
    category=ErrorCategory.SERVER_ERROR,
    operation="operation_name",
    error_code_prefix="AGENT",
)

Special considerations:

  • Goal execution error handling
  • Agent state management (pause/resume)
  • Command approval workflow errors
  • Command execution errors

Testing Requirements

  • Comprehensive tests for each batch (~12 tests per batch)
  • Agent state transition error handling verification
  • Business logic preservation (HTTPException, error responses)
  • Pattern compliance validation
  • Error handling configuration tests

Success Criteria

  • All 5 endpoints migrated
  • All 3 exception handlers replaced with decorator (or preserved if nested)
  • All tests passing (100%)
  • Estimated line savings: ~40-50 lines
  • No regression in basic agent functionality
  • Consistent error responses across all agent endpoints
  • State transition logic preserved

    ✅ Verification Complete - Issue #27 ALREADY MIGRATED (100%)

    Verification Date: 2025-11-15

    Migration Status: ✅ COMPLETE

    File: backend/api/agent.py (394 lines)
    Migrated Endpoints: 5/5 (100%)
    Decorator Coverage: 5/5 @with_error_handling decorators (100%)
    Try-Catch Blocks: 0 (all removed) ✅

    All Endpoints Migrated ✅

    1. POST /goal - receive_goal (line 37)

    • Decorator: Lines 32-36 ✅
    • Operation: receive_goal
    • Prefix: AGENT
    • Function: Receives and executes user goals via orchestrator

    2. POST /pause - pause_agent_api (line 171)

    • Decorator: Lines 166-170 ✅
    • Operation: pause_agent
    • Prefix: AGENT
    • Function: Pauses agent operations

    3. POST /resume - resume_agent_api (line 202)

    • Decorator: Lines 197-201 ✅
    • Operation: resume_agent
    • Prefix: AGENT
    • Function: Resumes agent operations

    4. POST /command_approval - command_approval (line 235)

    • Decorator: Lines 230-234 ✅
    • Operation: command_approval
    • Prefix: AGENT
    • Function: Handles user command approval/denial

    5. POST /execute_command - execute_command (line 285)

    • Decorator: Lines 280-284 ✅
    • Operation: execute_command
    • Prefix: AGENT
    • Function: Executes shell commands with security validation

    Decorator Pattern Analysis

    All endpoints use correct pattern:

    @with_error_handling(
        category=ErrorCategory.SERVER_ERROR,
        operation="operation_name",
        error_code_prefix="AGENT",
    )
    @router.post("{path}")
    async def endpoint_function(...):
        # Business logic with HTTPException for specific cases

    Try-Catch Block Analysis

    Total try-catch blocks: 0 ✅

    No try-catch blocks found - All error handling delegated to @with_error_handling decorator. This is the cleanest migration pattern (Simple Pattern for all endpoints).

    Code Quality Assessment

    ✅ Strengths:

    • 100% decorator coverage across all endpoints
    • Consistent error code prefix (AGENT)
    • Zero try-catch blocks (cleanest pattern)
    • Proper HTTPException usage for validation errors (400, 403)
    • Security layer integration with permission checking
    • Event-driven architecture with event_manager
    • Prometheus metrics integration for task tracking

    Business Logic Preservation:

    • ✅ Goal execution via orchestrator
    • ✅ Agent pause/resume state management
    • ✅ Command approval workflow with Redis pub/sub
    • ✅ Command execution with security validation
    • ✅ Permission checking for all operations
    • ✅ Audit logging for security events
    • ✅ Event publishing for real-time updates
    • ✅ Prometheus metrics tracking

    Integration Points:

    • orchestrator - Goal execution and agent control (lines 55, 82, 182, 191, 213, 222)
    • security_layer - Permission checking and audit logging
    • event_manager - Event publishing for real-time updates
    • prometheus_metrics - Task execution metrics (lines 17, 156)
    • main_redis_client - Command approval pub/sub (line 241)
    • NetworkConstants - Network configuration

    Security Features:

    • Permission-based access control for all operations
    • Audit logging for all security-relevant actions
    • Command validation before execution
    • User role verification
    • Resource-level permission checks

    Migration Impact

    Lines Saved: N/A (already migrated)
    Decorator Pattern: ✅ Fully compliant (Simple Pattern for all endpoints)
    Error Handling: ✅ Centralized via @with_error_handling
    HTTPException Patterns: ✅ Preserved for validation/permission errors

    Verification Commands

    # Endpoint count
    grep -nE '@router\.(get|post)' backend/api/agent.py
    # Result: 5 endpoints ✅

    # Decorator count
    grep -n '@with_error_handling' backend/api/agent.py | wc -l
    # Result: 5 decorators ✅

    # Try-catch analysis
    grep -n 'try:' backend/api/agent.py
    # Result: No output (0 try-catch blocks) ✅

    Conclusion

    Status: ✅ COMPLETE - NO MIGRATION NEEDED

    agent.py was already fully migrated to @with_error_handling decorator pattern. All 5 endpoints have proper decorator coverage with consistent error code prefixes. Zero try-catch blocks - this is the cleanest migration pattern where all error handling is delegated to the centralized decorator.
