NPU Multi-Worker Load Balancing & Pool Management #168

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

Objective

Implement health-aware load balancing across multiple NPU workers for improved throughput and reliability

Current State

  • Single NPUWorkerClient at 172.16.168.22:8081
  • Basic task queue via Redis
  • No load balancing or failover

Proposed Architecture

Worker Pool Configuration

YAML-based worker pool config similar to SSH hosts pattern:

npu_workers:
  workers:
    - id: vm2-npu
      host: 172.16.168.22
      port: 8081
      priority: 1
    - id: windows-npu
      host: 172.16.168.20
      port: 8082
      priority: 2

Load Balancing Strategy

Health-aware least-connections algorithm - optimal for variable-duration NPU inference tasks

Components

1. NPU Worker Pool Manager

  • Maintain pool of NPU worker clients
  • Health monitoring per worker
  • Worker registration/deregistration
  • Connection lifecycle management

2. Load Balancer

  • Route tasks to healthiest worker with fewest active tasks
  • Circuit breaker per worker (auto-disable unhealthy workers)
  • Automatic retry with different worker on failure
  • Metrics collection: response time, active tasks, failure rate

3. Health Monitoring

  • Periodic health checks (every 30 seconds)
  • Circuit breaker pattern (open/half-open/closed states)
  • Exponential backoff for failed workers
  • Auto-recovery when worker becomes healthy

4. Failover & Retry

  • Automatic failover to backup workers
  • Configurable retry policy (max 3 retries)
  • Task requeue on worker failure
  • Dead letter queue for permanently failed tasks

Integration Points

  • src/npu_integration.py - NPUWorkerClient, NPUTaskQueue
  • src/utils/service_registry.py - ServiceRegistry patterns
  • backend/services/ssh_connection_pool.py - Connection pooling patterns

Success Criteria

  • Support 2+ NPU workers simultaneously
  • Automatic failover working correctly
  • <100ms load balancing overhead
  • 99.9% task success rate with retry
  • Health checks don't impact performance

Performance Targets

  • Handle 1000+ concurrent tasks
  • <50ms worker selection time
  • <1% task routing errors
  • Graceful degradation with worker failures

Priority

Low - Optimization for future scale

    Design Complete ✅

Comprehensive design document created and approved: docs/plans/2026-02-05-npu-worker-pool-design.md

    Design Summary

Architecture: Extends existing NPUWorkerClient and NPUTaskQueue pattern with transparent multi-worker support

    Key Features:

    • ✅ Priority-first + least-connections load balancing
    • ✅ Hybrid health monitoring (background + on-demand checks every 30s)
    • ✅ Conservative circuit breaker (5 failures → 60s cooldown)
    • ✅ Automatic failover with worker exclusion (max 3 retries)
    • ✅ Zero breaking changes to existing code
    • ✅ Hot-reloadable configuration via /api/npu/pool/reload

    Performance Targets:

    • Worker selection: <50ms
    • Load balancing overhead: <100ms
    • Concurrent tasks: 1000+
    • Success rate: 99.9% with retry
    • Routing errors: <1%

    Implementation Phases

    1. Core Pool Implementation - Worker pool, config loader, selection algorithm
    2. Health Monitoring & Circuit Breaker - Background monitoring, circuit breaker state machine
    3. Retry & Failover - Retry logic with exclusion, edge case handling
    4. Observability & API - Pool stats, worker status, config reload endpoints
    5. Documentation & Deployment - API docs, operator runbook, production deployment

    Next Steps

Ready to proceed with implementation using:

    • superpowers:using-git-worktrees - Create isolated workspace
    • superpowers:writing-plans - Detailed implementation plan
