Batch 52 Migration

Migrate the first 2 endpoints in backend/api/chat.py to use centralized error handling.

Parent Issue: #15 (chat.py migration overview)
Tracking Issue: #14 (Phase 2b progress)

Tasks

  • Identify first 2 endpoints to migrate in chat.py
  • Apply @with_error_handling decorator
  • Remove outer try-catch blocks
  • Preserve nested try-catch if needed (Mixed Pattern)
  • Un-indent business logic
  • Add 10-12 comprehensive tests
  • Run full test suite
  • Commit migrations
  • Commit tests
  • Update issue Error Handling Refactoring: Phase 2b Progress Tracking #14 with progress
  • Store in Memory MCP

Migration Pattern

Decorator:

@with_error_handling(
    category=ErrorCategory.SERVER_ERROR,
    operation="operation_name",
    error_code_prefix="CHAT",
)

Patterns:

  • Simple Pattern: Remove all try-catch
  • Mixed Pattern: Preserve nested try-catch for specific error handling

Expected Results

  • 2 endpoints migrated
  • ~6-10 lines saved per endpoint
  • 10-12 tests added
  • All tests passing (574+ total)
  • Progress: 102/1,070 handlers

    Closing: Not Needed

    chat.py has already been fully migrated with @with_error_handling decorator on all 17 endpoints.

    See #15 for verification details.

    Moving to next unmigrated file instead.

    ✅ Batch 52 Work Complete (Under Different Batch Numbers)

    This issue for "Batch 52" is now OUTDATED - the chat.py migration work was actually completed under different batch numbers.

    Actual Implementation:

    chat.py migration was completed across multiple batches:

    1. Batches 5-9: Applied @with_error_handling decorator to ALL 17 endpoints
    2. Batch 58 (commit a3bd1c4): Mixed Pattern refinement - removed redundant try-catch blocks

    Current Status:

    • ✅ ALL 17 chat.py endpoints have decorators
    • ✅ Only necessary try-catch blocks remain (error recovery - Mixed Pattern)
    • ✅ 634+ tests passing (9 batch 58 tests + earlier batches)
    • ✅ ~42 lines saved in batch 58 (redundant try-catch removal)
    • ✅ Total: 698 tests passing (includes monitoring.py)

    Verification:

    python -m pytest tests/unit/test_api_endpoint_migrations.py::TestBatch58ChatMigrations -v
    # Result: 9 passed ✅

    Next Steps:

    Closing as the work described in this issue has been completed under batches 5-9 and batch 58.

    chat.py is now 100% migrated with centralized error handling!
