fix(deps): pytesseract binding never installed — every OCR surface is dormant #13885
Every OCR surface in the platform is dormant at runtime. Ansible installs the
tesseract system packages on every backend host, but pytesseract — the Python
binding that actually calls them — is in no requirements file. So the binary
ships everywhere and is never reachable from Python.
Evidence
System packages are installed (autobot-slm-backend/ansible/roles/backend/tasks/main.yml:356):
logs pytesseract not installed; cannot read text from region, returns error
autobot-backend/services/captcha_solver.py:123
availability probe returns False; solver never OCRs
Each site guard-imports and degrades to a message, so there is no crash and no
alert — the features are simply permanently off. gui_controller.py:152 even
documents the intent: "Uses the same pytesseract dependency as...".
This matches the agentloop_inert_in_production doctrine already named in autobot-backend/llm_shared/fallback_events.py:11: wired into one path, inert in
practice.
Fix
Add pytesseract to autobot-backend/requirements.txt next to Pillow, with a
comment tying it to the ansible system packages so the two never drift apart again.
Acceptance criteria
pytesseract pinned in autobot-backend/requirements.txt
PR #13923 merged to Dev_new_gui — commit 64f6a9197, confirmed present in the base:
$ git log origin/Dev_new_gui --oneline --grep=13885
64f6a9197 fix(deps): declare pytesseract so the OCR surfaces can reach tesseract (#13885) (#13923)
Delivered:pytesseract>=0.3.13 declared in autobot-backend/requirements.txt beside Pillow, plus a pairing guard (tests/test_ocr_binding_declared_13885.py) that fails in both directions — binding removed, or system packages removed. Mutation-tested rather than re-run: each half of the pair was broken in turn and the guard failed each time.
This issue stays OPEN. Two acceptance criteria are unmet and cannot be met by a merge:
POST /api/vision/ocr returns extracted text for a PNG containing text
Host evidence from a deployed backend
A declaration in requirements.txt is not a running binding. Closing on merge evidence here would repeat the pattern where a merged change was assumed live and was not. #13885 closes once a code-sync lands this on a host and the endpoint is exercised there — with the curl output posted.
Until then the four OCR surfaces (/api/vision/ocr, vnc_manager, gui_controller.read_text_from_region, CAPTCHA solver) should be assumed still dormant in the running deployment.
$ git show origin/Dev_new_gui:autobot-backend/requirements.txt | grep -ci pytesseract
2
pytesseract is declared, so the OCR surfaces are no longer dormant for want of a dependency. Verified by mutation rather than a re-read: removing the requirements line made the guard fire.
Note this closes the declaration half only. #13884 — scanned PDFs landing as empty documents with no error — remains open; a declared dependency does not by itself make the ingest path report an empty extraction.
Retro-note: this closed on merge evidence for host-behaviour criteria
Two acceptance criteria on this issue were never satisfied:
POST /api/vision/ocr returns extracted text for a PNG containing text
Host evidence from a deployed backend, not merge evidence
It closed anyway, on the merge of PR #13923. I had left it open for exactly this and said so at the time.
The irony is worth recording: this issue was about a declaration that was never a running thing — the tesseract binary shipped on every host and the Python binding did not, for months, with nothing alerting. Closing it on "the requirements line merged" is the same mistake one level up.
The codebase side is genuinely complete now, and further along than when this closed: the binding is declared, requirements-ci mirrors it (#14551 found it had not reached CI for months after this closed), CI installs the tesseract binary, and test_ci_actually_has_the_ocr_toolchain fails loudly if any of that regresses.
The host side remains unverified. Tracked as #14801 rather than reopening this, since the outstanding work is a deploy-and-exercise activity, not a code change.
Until #14801 is done, treat /api/vision/ocr, vnc_manager OCR, gui_controller.read_text_from_region and the CAPTCHA solver as still dormant in the deployment.
