Linting cleanup #63
Description
The code has a large number of linting errors from the older parts of the codebase that I've been unable to fix without potentially breaking support for older python versions, and others I've been avoiding just because of the time investment. After dropping support for end-of-life Python versions it will be time to go through it all.
