Python interpreter discover taking longer

[amunger]

Type: Bug

opening a notebook for the first time kicks off interpreter discovery that seems to be taking longer than it used to. Around 28 seconds for my machine and @minsa110 noted that she's gotten similar feedback from others

Things seem normal looking at the logs, the only thing we changed is we started using -I flag.

I believe microsoft/vscode-jupyter#12719 should solve the issue, I've pinged multiple times in there with no avail. That way Discovery taking a bit longer would not matter.

i fail to see how this will improve the discovery, if anything this will make it slower, based on your comments, Language Server could be faster, but thats not the issue.

Thats the opposite of the issue, if you check the issue again,. the problem is with interpreter discovery and not language features.

All you are saying is that removing the code would not matter, i.e. it offers no perf improvement, in that case, i would rather leave this for now. However if we can prove in the case of @amunger that it would be faster, then I am happy to remove this, else it adversely (IMHO) impacts the kernel picker for notebook.s

I expect we should not block execution on entire discovery. Python API sends partial updates, so even if all of discovery isn't finished yet, selecting kernels should still be possible.

For eg. in Python ext, you can see interpreters even before all of discovery has completed, kind of like this:

So it doesn't matter if all of discovery takes a longer time, and right interpreter can be selected sooner.

@amunger That seems to be because Jupyter still waits for entire interpreter discovery to finish before loading the list, unlike loading it dynamically using the Python environment API. Can you please make sure it is done this way in the Jupyter extension? After which let me know if there's still an issue with discovery being slower.
