[Miscompile] Adaptive: let h = n aliases n after store pruning, so set n = 7 changes h #3808
Description
Fixed
Kind: Miscompile in one profile's code path.
Affects: Adaptive
Related: #3769 (this is its Adaptive half)
Found in: between_profiles.min_prune_store_alias.106913d21a, between_profiles.min_loop_mutable_copy_prune.662217a937
h should hold n's value at the let. Adaptive's store pruning replaces h with n itself,
and n's value is read after set n = 7.
Q#
operation Main() : Int {
use q = Qubit();
X(q);
mutable n = 0;
if MResetZ(q) == One { set n = 2; }
set n = n + 1;
let h = n;
set n = 7;
h
}Outputs
10 shots each. The simulator runs the Q# program directly; each profile compiles it to QIR, which is run with qir-runner.
| Run | Output | Correct? |
|---|---|---|
| Simulator | 3 |
yes |
| Base | rejected (Qdk.Qsc.CapabilitiesCk.UseOfDynamicBool) |
n/a |
| Adaptive_RI | 3 |
yes |
| Adaptive_RIF | 3 |
yes |
| Adaptive | 7 |
no |
| Correct output | 3 |
Correct output
n is 3 when h is bound.
Other shapes
A loop-local copy does the same. The simulator, Adaptive_RI and Adaptive_RIF return 2, and
Adaptive returns 3:
operation Main() : Int {
use q = Qubit();
mutable x = 0;
mutable last = -1;
for i in 0..2 {
X(q);
mutable old = x;
set x = i + 1;
set last = old;
}
Reset(q);
last
}Probable cause
prune_unneeded_stores (qsc_rir/src/passes/prune_unneeded_stores.rs:66-80) keeps stores
only for variables used across blocks. It drops h's store and maps h to the operand n
(map_variable_use_in_block, qsc_rir/src/utils.rs:147-156). When alloca/load are
inserted, h becomes a load of n's slot placed after store 7.
Reproduce
"""Adaptive: `let h = n` aliases `n` after store pruning, so `set n = 7` changes `h`
Compiles the Q# program below to QIR for each target profile, runs that QIR with
qir-runner, and runs the same program in the Q# simulator for comparison.
Exits 0 while the bug reproduces: Adaptive returns something other than 3.
