tsd -> typings

Upgraded the project from using tsd to using Typings. Also various miscellaneous tweaks including:

• using webpack-fail-plugin to ensure that failed compilation breaks the build in a CI scenario
• using karma-notify-reporter to notify failing unit tests when running in watch mode
