When starting to play a new game on a microg device, game data will not get created in Google Play Games.
In consequence, features like save game will not work.
The game also gets stuck with trying to login (the choose account/profile dialogue would continue to popup nearly indefinitely).
That is the case even if the game properly detects the ability to use Google Play Games.
However, when logging into the game on a google-native gms device & creating the initial game data mapping in Play Games, any subsequent operations like save game can properly be done on the microg device.
