sidecar not updating itself anymore

Previously (in older versions) I was able to update sidecar by itself. But now I can't do that.

I've pressed ! and then u and see this:

I'm having the same issue. I just did a fresh install via brew, open sidecar for the first time, I get the popup that 0.71.0 is available, update, and next time i open it the same thing happens.

Using brew upgrade sidecar says I'm already on latest:
brew upgrade sidecar
Warning: marcus/tap/sidecar 0.69.0 already installed

Diagnosis

The root cause is a version mismatch between GitHub releases and the Homebrew tap formula.

What's happening:

1. Sidecar's update checker queries the GitHub Releases API and sees v0.71.0 is the latest
2. It detects a Homebrew installation and shows "update available"
3. When you press update, it runs brew upgrade sidecar
4. But the Homebrew formula (marcus/homebrew-tap) is still pinned to v0.69.0
5. Brew says "already on latest" → nothing changes → update notification persists

Fix:

• Immediate: Updating the Homebrew tap formula to v0.71.0 now
• Long-term: Automating formula updates as part of the release pipeline so this doesn't recur
• Will also add better error messaging when the brew upgrade doesn't actually change the version

In my case Homebrew not involved (I don't use it).
Previously my sidecar installation was updated via go install.

Hey @nick4eva — for non-Homebrew installs, you should be able to update with:

go install github.com/marcus/sidecar@latest

We just shipped v0.71.1 which includes a bunch of update-related fixes (mostly for Homebrew, but the underlying version detection was improved too). Can you try updating to v0.71.1 and let us know if the update prompt loop goes away?

If go install was working before and stopped, something may have changed in your Go module cache. A go clean -modcache before reinstalling could help.

Ran into the same issue with td. Sidecar keeps showing me a message that td 0.33 is out, but doing an update via the TUI does not actually update it cause the homebrew tap is behind I think.
