If there are 88 or more colors available, it'd be nice to visually distinguish the gutter in some way. We might just be able to use the selection color for this, since the gutter uses reverse-video to show the selection.
This could become more important once #14 is implemented, since then there could be a guaranteed-empty gutter in the change panes (unless I make the presence of the gutter runtime-toggleable)
