Symptoms: 'Availability' button disappeared in mid-January from hildon-status-menu on N900, from an up-to-date -devel device AND from a fresh install too. Two months later, Inky noticed a similar issue on Droid 4, concerning 'Brightness' and 'Tor' button.
Restarting the applet or reboot doesn't solve the issue.
Cause: unknown
Workaround: hildon-status-menu seems to start too early from Xsession when some functionalities/apps are added to the applet. Starting hildon-status-menu later solves the issue with absolutely no troubles. (tested on N900 for 2 months)
potential fix: rename 15hildon-status-menu to 75hildon-status-menu in /etc/X11/Xsession.post

It would be good (IMO) to figure out why this is happening - i.e. what is causing the crash. @freemangordon - what do you think would be a good way to do this? Do we need to start saving coredumps or something?
I think yes, maybe it is time to put sp-rich-core in the repo. However, I closed the PR at it is not even a workaround, as we dont; even know what the issue is.
