Crashes VS2026 after install

I just installed Visual Studio 2026 Community (I used the Insiders preview up until the final version was released on 11/11/2025). After I installed the released version, I restored the settings I was using in the preview (that had been restored from the setting I use in VS2022), then I installed my usual extensions: Code Cleanup On Save, Color Preview, Image Optimizer (64-bit), File Icons and Open Command Line. After installed, I can't use Visual Studio again. I fails loading any solution with the followind error.

The solution explorer remains empty. When it fails, trying to open the extensions menu also fails, as well as trying to close VS. I have to "End Task" in Task Manager in order to be able to close it. If I don't try to open any solution, I can still open the Extension Manager and close VS. I tried removing disabling and also removing the extensions, but it didn't help. I had to "Repair" the installation using the Visual Studio Installer to fix it, and then apply my settings again.

The second time, I tried one extension at a time, to see if I found out the culprit. I installed Code Cleanup On Save without any issues. After using it for a while with various projects, I installed Open Command Line and the error happened again.

I didn't have any issues with extensions while using the preview.

I just did another "Repair" using the Visual Studio Installer. This time, I didn't restore my previous settings. I just installed both extensions that failed before. It worked.

It seems that restoring settings from the previous install was causing the problem, but it only manifested after the extension was installed. Now I'll try installing the other extensions I use.

I had/have the same problem, the same pop up window. I wish that the ActivityLog had a clear visibility which extension caused the issue. I don't know which extension caused this catastrophic VS 2026 fail but it corrupted also solution explorer with some error messages. The "Repair" worked. I tried installing extensions three times and I had to to repair it 3 times. I am scared to install extensions so I don't have to go through this again.

When the OpenCommandLine extension managed to be installed, when I press ALT+Space, the usual short cut it open this in the corner which seems to be a default windows behaviour instead opening the terminal. Interestingly, it works ok in the Insider - opens terminal.

Mine worked if I didn't restore the settings from the previous install. I suspect it could be because the previous install was in my work computer, running VS 2025 Enterprise, and this is my personal computer, running Community (for my personal projects).

I didn't have this problem when I upgraded to VS 2022 under the same scenario. Just installing VS 2026 without restoring my settings seem to get most of the setting from my profile, but not all. I still had to "fix" a lot of things. But at least I was able to install the extensions I use without issues.

I think I found a pattern but still I am confused because now the extension works as it should be. When I install some old extensions it breaks something and those pop ups are showing up but when I reinstall a random extension it fixes old. Like some extensions configuration register gets broken and will a follow up installation it gets fixed. So now is all working on my side.
