920M Nvidia driver 470 not installing

when trying to install 470 driver to support my Nvidia 920M graphics its throwing error post installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10

HWE kernel issues

To provide support for newer AMD processors, Linux Mint 22.2 and 22.3 ship HWE Kernel 6.14.

This kernel however has issues with:

• Virtualbox
• Old NVIDIA cards which use the 470 driver (this driver is no longer supported by NVIDIA and thus doesn't support newer kernels)

If you are affected by one of these issues, we recommend you install Linux Mint 22.1 instead, which ships with LTS kernel 6.8.

You can then perform an upgrade towards 22.3 without switching towards the HWE kernel.

Thanks @billyswong. I'm switching my dad's laptop to Linux Mint and have encountered exactly this issue.

Do you have any insight as to whether older NVIDIA cards will ever be supported by kernels newer than 6.8? Based on what you say, it sounds like probably not. Although if I understand correctly, I should be able to use LM 22.3 with Kernel 6.8 until April 2029.

Also, it's worth noting for those who have encountered this issue after installing LM 22.3, you don't need to then install LM 22.1. You can simply use the Update Manager:

• Update Manager
• View menu > Linux Kernels
• Choose 6.8 in the left pane
• Choose the latest release of 6.8 in the right pane
• Click the Install button
• After it finishes installing, reboot
• Hold shift to get the boot menu
• Choose Advanced Options
• Take note of the versions that are installed. Boot using 6.8
• Update Manager
• View menu > Linux Kernels
• Remove any kernel newer than 6.8
• Reboot
• Go to a terminal and run uname --kernel-release, to confirm you are running a 6.8.x kernel
