Customisation - "List View" option like winows explorer.

[tfinger18]

As the title, would love to see small icons with more text as I use shortcuts in a folder portal to point to different locations on my computer.

+1 for this, it's pretty much the only thing stopping me from replacing every installation of stardock fences in the company I work for with this wonderful piece of software. The end users would be too confused if the view wasn't a list which is how they are setup atm.

Would love to see list view (just file name and no icons). At least for portals. Not a deal breaker but would be nice. Fences 3.x had this function so I got used to it.

The only thing missing in this great program is the option to show files and directories as a list, without icons, and with directories first, just in Windows Explorer and in other desktop organizers, like in iTop Easy Desktop.
I do not think many people need icons in a directory list.

Hi @tfinger18, @limbo666 — I wanted exactly this, so I built it: an optional per-portal Details view (Explorer-style columns), selectable per frame via View → Icons / Details.

It's fully additive and opt-in — frames default to Icons and nothing changes unless you switch one (all new state is stored as new keys in frames.json, so existing configs load untouched). It's themed to match the frame (dark/light adaptive), stays live (follows on-disk add / rename / delete automatically), and never blocks the UI on large or network folders (enumeration runs in the background; sort/filter happen in memory).

Columns — Name · Date modified · Type · Size (+ an optional #)

• Sort: click a header to sort; click again to flip direction (a ▲/▼ arrow marks the active column); folders are grouped first.
• Manual arrangement: drag a row to reorder it, with a live insertion line showing where it drops; the custom order is saved per folder. An optional hidden # (position) column exposes that order.
• Show / hide columns: right-click any header → a checkable column chooser (including the # column).
• Reorder columns: drag a header left/right.
• Resize columns: drag a header edge — the Name column auto-fills the remaining width.
• All of it — sort mode, direction, manual order, which columns are visible, their order, and their widths — is remembered per frame.

Item interactions (Explorer conventions)

• Double-click to open/launch; Ctrl+double-click or Ctrl+Enter navigates a subfolder in place.
• Enter = open · F2 = rename · Delete → Recycle Bin (Shift+Delete = permanent) · right-click for Open / Rename / Delete / Copy path.
• Type-to-select (type a name to jump to it), row tooltips (full name + the shortcut's target / path), and drag a row out as a file (Move by default, Ctrl = Copy).
• Shortcuts are resolved, so a folder-shortcut classifies, sorts and navigates as a folder.

Fonts / appearance (built alongside — these could be a separate PR if you prefer)

• Per-portal item font size (numeric) — applies to that portal's Icons and Details labels.
• Global font family — one app-wide font for all frames.
• An Options → Style & FX → "Portal Defaults & Fonts" section sets the defaults for both.

The pure logic (filter / sort / metadata) is unit-tested. @limbo666 — would you welcome a PR (it would Closes #36)? I'm happy to scope it to your taste — e.g. just the core list view, or with the reorder + column customization, or including the font options — or to keep it in a fork if it isn't a direction you want for DF+. Screenshots below. Developed with AI assistance (Claude).

Working on it for next release

OK, so do you want my solution ? It's entreprise-grade and working like a charm... Happy to share...

[limbo666]

Please do share.
I have already done most of the dev but I would be happy to check your approach and maybe improve.
I have a bit different implementation though.

[Darlio]

Thanks so much — really appreciate you being open to it. 🙏

Quick, honest bit of context on the "enterprise-grade" wording from before: I said that mostly as a worry, not a boast. I know AI-assisted contributions can sometimes be a bit messy, so I deliberately asked Claude to do the most careful, thorough job it could — because I wanted this to try to live up to the standard that's already in your codebase, which frankly is enterprise-grade. So please read it as "I tried hard not to hand you a mess." 🙂

I've pushed my take to a branch on my fork so you can look through it at your own pace: https://github.com/Darlio/DesktopFramesPlus/tree/feature/portal-details-view . It's very much an approach, not the approach — please borrow anything useful, ignore the rest, and I'm happy to rework it to fit however you'd prefer to design the view. You know this project far better than I do, so I'll defer to your direction on structure, naming, UX, all of it.

To make it easy to navigate, the commits are prefixed by area: the feat(portal) commits are the Details view itself, while the handful of fix(...) commits are small, independent fixes I came across along the way and will file separately as their own issues — so you can safely ignore those here. And of course, happy to split any piece out into its own branch if that's easier for you.

Whatever you decide, thanks again for building DF+ and for being welcoming about contributions.
