Updates markdown from 3.5.1 to 3.6

Release notes

Sourced from markdown's releases.

Release 3.6

Changed

Refactor TOC Sanitation

  • All postprocessors are now run on heading content.
  • Footnote references are now stripped from heading content. Fixes #660.
  • A more robust striptags is provided to convert headings to plain text. Unlike, the markupsafe implementation, HTML entities are not unescaped.
  • The plain text name, rich html, and unescaped raw data-toc-label are saved to toc_tokens, allowing users to access the full rich text content of the headings directly from toc_tokens.
  • The value of data-toc-label is sanitized separate from heading content before being written to name. This fixes a bug which allowed markup through in certain circumstances. To access the raw unsanitized data, retrieve the value from token['data-toc-label'] directly.
  • An html.unescape call is made just prior to calling slugify so that slugify only operates on Unicode characters. Note that html.unescape is not run on name, html, or data-toc-label.
  • The functions get_name and stashedHTML2text defined in the toc extension are both deprecated. Instead, third party extensions should use some combination of the new functions run_postprocessors, render_inner_html and striptags.

Fixed

  • Include scripts/*.py in the generated source tarballs (#1430).
  • Ensure lines after heading in loose list are properly detabbed (#1443).
  • Give smarty tree processor higher priority than toc (#1440).
  • Permit carets (^) and square brackets (]) but explicitly exclude backslashes (\) from abbreviations (#1444).
  • In attribute lists (attr_list, fenced_code), quoted attribute values are now allowed to contain curly braces (}) (#1414).

Release 3.5.2

Fixed

  • Fix type annotations for convertFile - it accepts only bytes-based buffers. Also remove legacy checks from Python 2 (#1400)
  • Remove legacy import needed only in Python 2 (#1403)
  • Fix typo that left the attribute AdmonitionProcessor.content_indent unset (#1404)
  • Fix edge-case crash in InlineProcessor with AtomicString (#1406).
  • Fix edge-case crash in codehilite with an empty code tag (#1405).
  • Improve and expand type annotations in the code base (#1401).
  • Fix handling of bogus comments (#1425).

Compilers and language runtimes often use helper functions that are
fundamentally uninteresting when debugging anything but the
compiler/runtime itself. This patch introduces a user-extensible
mechanism that allows for these frames to be hidden from backtraces and
automatically skipped over when navigating the stack with `up` and
`down`.

This does not affect the numbering of frames, so `f <N>` will still
provide access to the hidden frames. The `bt` output will also print a
hint that frames have been hidden.

My primary motivation for this feature is to hide thunks in the Swift
programming language, but I'm including an example recognizer for
`std::function::operator()` that I wished for myself many times while
debugging LLDB.

rdar://126629381

Example output. (Yes, my proof-of-concept recognizer could hide even
more frames if we had a method that returned the function name without
the return type or I used something that isn't based off regex, but it's
really only meant as an example).

Random testing revealed it's possible to crash the analyzer with the
command line invocation:

clang -cc1 -analyze -analyzer-checker=nullability empty.c

where the source file, empty.c is an empty source file.

```
clang: <root>/clang/lib/StaticAnalyzer/Core/CheckerManager.cpp:56:
   void clang::ento::CheckerManager::finishedCheckerRegistration():
     Assertion `Event.second.HasDispatcher && "No dispatcher registered for an event"' failed.
PLEASE submit a bug report to https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/
```

This commit removes the assertion which failed here, because it was
logically incorrect: it required that if an Event is handled by some
(enabled) checker, then there must be an **enabled** checker which can
emit that kind of Event. It should be OK to disable the event-producing
checkers but enable an event-consuming checker which has different
responsibilities in addition to handling the events.

Note that this assertion was in an `#ifndef NDEBUG` block, so this
change does not impact the non-debug builds.

## Description

This PR fixes a segmentation fault that occurs when passing options
requiring arguments via `-Xopenmp-target=<triple>`. The issue was that
the function `Driver::getOffloadArchs` did not properly parse the
extracted option, but instead assumed it was valid, leading to a crash
when incomplete arguments were provided.

Inefficient SVE codegen occurs on at least two in-order cores,
those being Cortex-A510 and Cortex-A520. For example a simple vector
add

```
void foo(float a, float b, float dst, unsigned n) {
    for (unsigned i = 0; i < n; ++i)
        dst[i] = a[i] + b[i];
}
```

Vectorizes the inner loop into the following interleaved sequence
of instructions.

```
        add     x12, x1, x10
        ld1b    { z0.b }, p0/z, [x1, x10]
        add     x13, x2, x10
        ld1b    { z1.b }, p0/z, [x2, x10]
        ldr     z2, [x12, #1, mul vl]
        ldr     z3, [x13, #1, mul vl]
        addvl   x10, x10, #2
        str     z1, [x12, #1, mul vl]
```

By adjusting the target features to prefer fixed over scalable if the
cost is equal we get the following vectorized loop.

```
         ldp q0, q3, [x11, #-16]
         subs    x13, x13, #8
         ldp q1, q2, [x10, #-16]
…reporting (#131756)
### Description
This PR resolves a deadlock between AddressSanitizer (ASan) and
LeakSanitizer (LSan)
that occurs when both sanitizers attempt to acquire locks in conflicting
orders across
threads. The fix ensures safe lock acquisition ordering by preloading
module information
before error reporting.
---
### Issue Details
**Reproducer**
```cpp
// Thread 1: ASan error path
int arr[1] = {0};
std::thread t([&]() {
  arr[1] = 1; // Triggers ASan OOB error
});

// Thread 2: LSan check path
__lsan_do_leak_check();
```
**Lock Order Conflict**:
- Thread 1 (ASan error reporting):
  1. Acquires ASan thread registry lock (B)
  1. Attempts to acquire libdl lock (A) via `dl_iterate_phdr`
- Thread 2 (LSan leak check):
  1. Acquires libdl lock (A) via `dl_iterate_phdr`
  1. Attempts to acquire ASan thread registry lock (B)
This creates a circular wait condition (A -> B -> A) meeting all four
Coffman deadlock criteria.
---
### Fix Strategy
The root cause lies in ASan's error reporting path needing
`dl_iterate_phdr` (requiring lock A)
while already holding its thread registry lock (B). The solution:
1. **Preload Modules Early**: Force module list initialization _before_
acquiring ASan's thread lock
2. **Avoid Nested Locking**: Ensure symbolization (via dl_iterate_phdr)
completes before error reporting locks
Key code change:
```cpp
// Before acquiring ASan's thread registry lock:
Symbolizer::GetOrInit()->GetRefreshedListOfModules();
```
This guarantees module information is cached before lock acquisition,
eliminating
the need for `dl_iterate_phdr` calls during error reporting.
---
### Testing
Added **asan_lsan_deadlock.cpp** test case:
- Reproduces deadlock reliably without fix **under idle system
conditions**
   - Uses watchdog thread to detect hangs
   - Verifies ASan error reports correctly without deadlock
**Note**: Due to the inherent non-determinism of thread scheduling and
lock acquisition timing,
this test may not reliably reproduce the deadlock on busy systems (e.g.,
during parallel
   `ninja check-asan` runs).
---
### Impact
- Fixes rare but severe deadlocks in mixed ASan+LSan environments
- Maintains thread safety guarantees for both sanitizers
- No user-visible behavior changes except deadlock elimination
---
…ineType (#130674)"
This reverts commit 27c1aa9.
See comments on PR. After this change, Clang now asserts like this:
clang: ../llvm/include/llvm/IR/Metadata.h:1435: const MDOperand &llvm::MDNode::getOperand(unsigned int) const: Assertion `I < getNumOperands() && "Out of range"' failed.
...
 #8 0x000055f345c4e4cb clang::CodeGen::CGDebugInfo::getOrCreateInstanceMethodType()
 #10 0x000055f345b52519 clang::CodeGen::CodeGenModule::EmitExternalFunctionDeclaration()
This is due to pre-existing jankiness in the way BPF emits extra
declarations for debug info, but we should rollback and then fix forward.
…lection (#136795)
Fix a [test
failure](llvm/llvm-project#136236 (comment))
in #136236, apply a minor renaming of statistics, and remerge. See
details below.
# Changes in #136236
Currently, `DebuggerStats::ReportStatistics()` calls
`Module::GetSymtab(/*can_create=*/false)`, but then the latter calls
`SymbolFile::GetSymtab()`. This will load symbols if haven't yet. See
stacktrace below.
The problem is that `DebuggerStats::ReportStatistics` should be
read-only. This is especially important because it reports stats for
symtab parsing/indexing time, which could be affected by the reporting
itself if it's not read-only.
This patch fixes this problem by adding an optional parameter
`SymbolFile::GetSymtab(bool can_create = true)` and receiving the
`false` value passed down from `Module::GetSymtab(/*can_create=*/false)`
when the call is initiated from `DebuggerStats::ReportStatistics()`.
---
Notes about the following stacktrace:
1. This can be reproduced. Create a helloworld program on **macOS** with
dSYM, add `settings set target.preload-symbols false` to `~/.lldbinit`,
do `lldb a.out`, then `statistics dump`.
2. `ObjectFile::GetSymtab` has `llvm::call_once`. So the fact that it
called into `ObjectFileMachO::ParseSymtab` means that the symbol table
is actually being parsed.
Fix a [test
failure](llvm/llvm-project#136236 (comment))
in `TestStats.py`. The original version of the added test checks that
all modules have symbol count zero when `target.preload-symbols ==
false`. The test failed on macOS. Due to various reasons, on macOS,
symbols can be loaded for dylibs even with that setting, but not for the
main module. For now, the fix of the test is to limit the assertion to
only the main module. The test now passes on macOS. In the future, when
we have a way to control a specific list of plug-ins to be loaded, there
may be a configuration that this test can use to assert that all modules
have symbol count zero.
Apply a minor renaming of statistics, per the
[suggestion](llvm/llvm-project#136226 (comment))
in #136226 after merge.
The underlying issue was that the `DeviceCompilerInstance` (used for
device-side CUDA compilation) was never initialized with a `Sema`, which
is required before constructing the `IncrementalCUDADeviceParser`.
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/89687e6f383b742a3c6542dc673a84d9f82d02de/clang/lib/Interpreter/DeviceOffload.cpp#L32
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/89687e6f383b742a3c6542dc673a84d9f82d02de/clang/lib/Interpreter/IncrementalParser.cpp#L31
Unlike the host-side `CompilerInstance` which runs `ExecuteAction`
inside the Interpreter constructor (thereby setting up Sema), the
device-side CI was passed into the parser uninitialized, leading to an
assertion or crash when accessing its internals.
To fix this, I refactored the `Interpreter::create` method to include an
optional `DeviceCI` parameter. If provided, we know we need to take care
of this instance too. Only then do we construct the
`IncrementalCUDADeviceParser`.
Problem :
1) The destructor currently handles no clearance for the DeviceParser
and the DeviceAct. We currently only have this
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/976493822443c52a71ed3c67aaca9a555b20c55d/clang/lib/Interpreter/Interpreter.cpp#L416-L419
2) The ownership for DeviceCI currently is present in
IncrementalCudaDeviceParser. But this should be similar to how the
combination for hostCI, hostAction and hostParser are managed by the
Interpreter. As on master the DeviceAct and DeviceParser are managed by
the Interpreter but not DeviceCI. This is problematic because :
IncrementalParser holds a Sema& which points into the DeviceCI. On
master, DeviceCI is destroyed before the base class ~IncrementalParser()
runs, causing Parser::reset() to access a dangling Sema (and as Sema
holds a reference to Preprocessor which owns PragmaNamespace) we see
this
```
  * frame #0: 0x00007fffee41cfe3 libclangCppInterOp.so.21.0gitclang::PragmaNamespace::~PragmaNamespace() + 99
    frame #1: 0x00007fffee435666 libclangCppInterOp.so.21.0gitclang::Preprocessor::~Preprocessor() + 3830

Summary:
There was a deadlock was introduced by [PR
#146441](llvm/llvm-project#146441) which changed
`CurrentThreadIsPrivateStateThread()` to
`CurrentThreadPosesAsPrivateStateThread()`. This change caused the
execution path in
[`ExecutionContextRef::SetTargetPtr()`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/10b5558b61baab59c7d3dff37ffdf0861c0cc67a/lldb/source/Target/ExecutionContext.cpp#L513)
to now enter a code block that was previously skipped, triggering
[`GetSelectedFrame()`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/10b5558b61baab59c7d3dff37ffdf0861c0cc67a/lldb/source/Target/ExecutionContext.cpp#L522)
which leads to a deadlock.

Thread 1 gets m_modules_mutex in
[`ModuleList::AppendImpl`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/96148f92146e5211685246722664e51ec730e7ba/lldb/source/Core/ModuleList.cpp#L218),
Thread 3 gets m_language_runtimes_mutex in
[`GetLanguageRuntime`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/96148f92146e5211685246722664e51ec730e7ba/lldb/source/Target/Process.cpp#L1501),
but then Thread 1 waits for m_language_runtimes_mutex in
[`GetLanguageRuntime`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/96148f92146e5211685246722664e51ec730e7ba/lldb/source/Target/Process.cpp#L1501)
while Thread 3 waits for m_modules_mutex in
[`ScanForGNUstepObjCLibraryCandidate`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/96148f92146e5211685246722664e51ec730e7ba/lldb/source/Plugins/LanguageRuntime/ObjC/GNUstepObjCRuntime/GNUstepObjCRuntime.cpp#L57).

This fixes the deadlock by adding a scoped block around the mutex lock
before the call to the notifier, and moved the notifier call outside of
the mutex-guarded section. The notifier call
[`NotifyModuleAdded`](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/96148f92146e5211685246722664e51ec730e7ba/lldb/source/Target/Target.cpp#L1810)
should be thread-safe, since the module should be added to the
`ModuleList` before the mutex is released, and the notifier doesn't
modify the module list further, and the call is operates on local state
and the `Target` instance.

With this new A320 in-order core, we follow adding the
FeatureUseFixedOverScalableIfEqualCost feature to A510 and A520
(#132246), which reaps the same code generation benefits of preferring
fixed over scalable when the cost is equal.

So when we have:
```
void foo(float* a, float* b, float* dst, unsigned n) {
    for (unsigned i = 0; i < n; ++i)
        dst[i] = a[i] + b[i];
}
```

When compiling without the feature enabled, we get:
```
...
    ld1b    { z0.b }, p0/z, [x0, x10]
    ld1b    { z2.b }, p0/z, [x1, x10]
    add     x12, x0, x10
    ldr     z1, [x12, #1, mul vl]
    add     x12, x1, x10
    ldr     z3, [x12, #1, mul vl]
    fadd    z0.s, z2.s, z0.s
    add     x12, x2, x10
    fadd    z1.s, z3.s, z1.s
    dech    x11
    st1b    { z0.b }, p0, [x2, x10]
    incb    x10, all, mul #2
    str     z1, [x12, #1, mul vl]
...
```

When compiling with, we get:
```
...
  	ldp	    q0, q1, [x12, #-16]
	ldp	    q2, q3, [x11, #-16]
	subs	x13, x13, #8
	fadd	v0.4s, v2.4s, v0.4s
	fadd	v1.4s, v3.4s, v1.4s
	add	    x11, x11, #32
	add	    x12, x12, #32
	stp	    q0, q1, [x10, #-16]
	add	    x10, x10, #32
...
A recent change adding a new sanitizer kind (via Sanitizers.def) was
reverted in c74fa20 ("Revert "[Clang][CodeGen] Introduce the
AllocToken SanitizerKind" (#162413)"). The reason was this ASan report,
when running the test cases in
clang/test/Preprocessor/print-header-json.c:
SUMMARY: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow clang/lib/Serialization/ASTReader.cpp:10171:15 in clang::ASTReader::ReadString(llvm::SmallVectorImpl<unsigned long> const&, unsigned int&)
```

The reason is this particular RUN line:
```
// RUN: env CC_PRINT_HEADERS_FORMAT=json CC_PRINT_HEADERS_FILTERING=direct-per-file CC_PRINT_HEADERS_FILE=%t.txt %clang -fsyntax-only -I %S/Inputs/print-header-json -isystem %S/Inputs/print-header-json/system -fmodules -fimplicit-module-maps -fmodules-cache-path=%t %s -o /dev/null
```

which was added in 8df194f ("[Clang] Support includes translated to
module imports in -header-include-filtering=direct-per-file (#156756)").

The problem is caused by an incremental build reusing stale cached
module files (.pcm) that are no longer binary-compatible with the
updated compiler. Adding a new sanitizer option altered the implicit
binary layout of the serialized LangOptions data structure. The build +
test system is oblivious to such changes. When the new compiler
attempted to read the old module file (from the previous test
invocation), it misinterpreted the data due to the layout mismatch,
resulting in a heap-buffer-overflow. Unfortunately Clang's PCM format
does not encode nor detect version mismatches here; a more graceful
failure mode would be preferable.

For now, fix the test to be more robust with incremental build + test.

While attempting to remove the use of undef from more loop vectoriser
tests I discovered a bug where this assert was firing:

```
llvm::Constant* llvm::Constant::getSplatValue(bool) const: Assertion `this->getType()->isVectorTy() && "Only valid for vectors!"' failed.
...
 #8 0x0000aaaab9e2fba4 llvm::Constant::getSplatValue
 #9 0x0000aaaab9dfb844 llvm::ConstantFoldBinaryInstruction
```

This seems to be happening because we are incorrectly generating
WidePtrAdd recipes for scalar VFs. The PR fixes this by checking whether
a plan has a scalar VF only in legalizeAndOptimizeInductions.

This PR also removes the use of undef from the test `both` in
Transforms/LoopVectorize/iv_outside_user.ll, which is what started
triggering the assert.

When building rustc std for arm64e, core fails to compile successfully
with the error:
```
Constant ValueID not recognized.
UNREACHABLE executed at rust/src/llvm-project/llvm/lib/Transforms/Utils/FunctionComparator.cpp:523!
```

This is a result of function merging so I modified
FunctionComparator.cpp as the ConstantPtrAuth value would go unchecked
in the switch statement.

The test case is a reduction from the failure in core and fails on main
with:
```
CHR builds the merged hot-path predicate with
IRBuilder::CreateLogicalAnd. That helper is implemented as a select and
can constant-fold to a non- Instruction (e.g. i1 true). The pass then
attempted to mark the merged condition as having explicitly unknown
branch weights when profile data is present, but it unconditionally did
cast<Instruction>(MergedCondition), which can crash in release builds.
Guard the metadata update with dyn_cast<Instruction> and pass the
containing Function explicitly to avoid calling Instruction::getFunction
when the value is not attached yet.
Add a regression test that exercises the constant-folding case.
Crashing stack:
Kernel panic is a special case, and there is no signal or exception for
that so we need to rely on special workaround called `dumptid`.
FreeBSDKernel plugin is supposed to find this thread and set it manually
through `SetStopInfo()` in `CalculateStopInfo()` like Mach core plugin
does.
Before (We had to find and select crashed thread list otherwise thread 1
was selected by default):
```
➜ sudo lldb /boot/panic/kernel -c /var/crash/vmcore.last
(lldb) target create "/boot/panic/kernel" --core "/var/crash/vmcore.last"
Core file '/var/crash/vmcore.last' (x86_64) was loaded.

…n splitBlockBefore() (#178895) (#179392)

llvm/llvm-project#178895 caused a clang
crash(see https://lab.llvm.org/buildbot/#/builders/210/builds/8229),
reverted in 6d52d26.

The crash is assertion `DT && "DT should be available to update
LoopInfo!"' failed.

https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/ad8d5349d46734826aaeae4a2ebdc6f427a5bad8/llvm/lib/Transforms/Utils/BasicBlockUtils.cpp#L1106

```
 #7 0x00007f5a380254e3 __assert_perror_fail (/usr/lib/libc.so.6+0x254e3)
 #8 0x0000563df5d8fde1 UpdateAnalysisInformation(llvm::BasicBlock*, llvm::BasicBlock*, llvm::ArrayRef<llvm::BasicBlock*>, llvm::DomTreeUpdater*, llvm::DominatorTree*, llvm::LoopInfo*, llvm::MemorySSAUpdater*, bool, bool&) BasicBlockUtils.cpp:0:0
 #9 0x0000563df5d8f3bb llvm::splitBlockBefore(llvm::BasicBlock*, llvm::ilist_iterator_w_bits<llvm::ilist_detail::node_options<llvm::Instruction, true, false, void, true, llvm::BasicBlock>, false, false>, llvm::DomTreeUpdater*, llvm::LoopInfo*, llvm::MemorySSAUpdater*, llvm::Twine const&)
#10 0x0000563df5d8cb08 llvm::SplitEdge(llvm::BasicBlock*, llvm::BasicBlock*, llvm::DominatorTree*, llvm::LoopInfo*, llvm::MemorySSAUpdater*, llvm::Twine const&)
#11 0x0000563df4ff5b59 (anonymous namespace)::CodeGenPrepare::splitLargeGEPOffsets()::$_1::operator()(long, llvm::Value*, llvm::GetElementPtrInst*) const CodeGenPrepare.cpp:0:0
#13 0x0000563df4fbb36c (anonymous namespace)::CodeGenPrepareLegacyPass::runOnFunction(llvm::Function&) CodeGenPrepare.cpp:0:0
```

I think this happened when we get DominatorTree with `DT.get()` in
`splitLargeGEPOffsets()` but `DT.reset()` already setting it to nullptr
in
https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/ad8d5349d46734826aaeae4a2ebdc6f427a5bad8/llvm/lib/CodeGen/CodeGenPrepare.cpp#L660.
To fix this assertion failure, use `getDT()` for
`splitLargeGEPOffsets()` to build the DominatorTree if it is set to
nullptr by `DT.reset()`.

I don't have a RSIC-V environment, so no reproducer. Checked that the
crash is fixed by rerunning buildbot with this patch
https://lab.llvm.org/buildbot/#/builders/210/builds/8248
