Summary

On Linux, ocx doctor / ocx status never credited the desktop app as restart protection. Desktop startup detection was macOS-only, so a desktop-owned runtime with Start at Login on was reported as AT RISK … run 'ocx service repair', and that command is refused while the desktop app owns the runtime.

This adds the Linux counterpart of the macOS check in src/service/desktop-startup.ts:

  • Ownership: the recorded owner must be desktop, and the install id in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/com.opencodex.desktop/install-id (default ~/.config) must match it.
  • Login registration: the XDG autostart entry $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/autostart/OpenCodex.desktop that tauri-plugin-autostart writes. It must be Type=Application, its Exec must be an absolute …/opencodex-desktop --autostart, and it must not be Hidden=true or X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=false. The app and its sibling ocx must be executable.
  • Live supervision: the PID file's process must resolve, via /proc/<pid>/exe, to that sibling ocx, and its parent (from /proc/<pid>/stat) must resolve to the app. Ownership and PID are re-read before the result is credited, as on macOS.
  • Any failed check keeps the durable desktop claim and stays at risk. Unreadable evidence never grants protection.

diagnoseDesktopStartup() dispatches by platform. deriveStartupHealth() now accepts desktop protection on Linux as well as macOS. The cheap ownership-only snapshot used by the live health cache now also reports Linux desktop ownership. The result is that a Linux desktop-owned install, even one whose startup cannot be verified, gets the existing "reopen OpenCodex and check Start at Login" guidance and no ocx service repair recommendation, matching macOS.

Closes #6667

Verification

  • bun run typecheck: pass
  • bun run structure:check: pass
  • bun run privacy:scan: pass
  • bun run skill:surface:check: pass
  • New tests/service/service-desktop-startup-linux.test.ts, registered in layout.json and test-layout-expected.json. It covers the protected case, XDG_CONFIG_HOME relocation, 16 failing-evidence mutations, the "no service recommendation" summary, and non-desktop ownership. All of these fail without the source change.
  • Focused set: every test file that references desktop startup, autostart health, startup health or doctor (63 files). Result: 1635 pass, 23 skip, 0 fail.
  • Live read-only check on Ubuntu 26.04 / GNOME 50 with the .deb desktop app owning the runtime: collectStartupHealth() now reports protected by desktop app at login and its proxy supervisor. Before this change it reported AT RISK (installed service is disabled, stopped, or unhealthy; run 'ocx service repair').
  • I did not run the full bun run test locally. A single unbounded run is memory-heavy on this machine, and test:changed selects most of the suite for these modules. I'm leaving the full run to CI.

Maintainer sweep refresh (head 3b9659021a)

Refreshed by the maintainer compat sweep (lane D): merged origin/dev 38455fb245 (no force-push) and added two commits after an adversarial review:

  • a1b7e474fd: an autostart entry with OnlyShowIn, NotShowIn or TryExec is not credited; Exec must be an unquoted absolute opencodex-desktop path without escapes or field codes plus exactly --autostart; the desktop executable is resolved with realpath before its sibling ocx is derived; the whole evidence chain (ownership, install-id, entry, executable targets, PID and parent) is read twice and must agree. scripts/test-layout/layout.json stays under 2,000 lines after merging dev. The guide documents that AppImage installs stay uncredited.
  • 81431ea4ba: auto-launch writes the entry under ~/.config/autostart; when XDG_CONFIG_HOME points elsewhere the session searches another directory, so startup safety stays at risk instead of crediting it.
  • 4d89c6a3cf: the Linux desktop-startup fixtures build POSIX paths, execute bits and symlinks, and the diagnostic only runs on Linux, so the file now uses test.skipIf(process.platform === "win32") like other POSIX-only service tests. The Windows shard had failed on exactly these fixtures.
  • 3b9659021a: XDG_CONFIG_HOME is compared with ~/.config after path.resolve, so a trailing slash no longer leaves the default location uncredited (CodeRabbit).

Commands on this head: bun test on the three desktop-startup files, the test-layout pair, file-size-ratchet and structure-ssot: 117 pass / 0 fail; bun run typecheck exit 0; bun run structure:check pass; docs-site bun run build pass (at a1b7e474fd). The new Linux tests fail against the previous source (12 pass / 21 fail before the fix). An independent re-review passed this head. The full local suite was not run because parallel lanes share this machine; the rest is left to hosted CI on this head.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (guides/desktop-app.md English source and the three structure/ docs that describe this module. Translated guides keep their macOS-only heading and don't contradict the English text.)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (Read-only probes. No credential or token handling.)

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Desktop startup protection checks now cover Linux as well as macOS. Protection is credited only when the autostart entry, installation identity, executable paths, and running app-to-proxy relationship pass validation.
    • Startup health now reflects eligible Linux desktop protection.
  • Documentation

    • Updated startup safety and runtime guidance with Linux eligibility requirements and cases where protection is not credited.

The fixtures build POSIX paths with execute bits and symlinks, and the
diagnostic itself only runs on Linux, so the Windows shard cannot exercise it.

🟡 Minor · Retain local desktop ownership when live health omits desktop. · autostart-health.ts:93-101

src/codex/autostart-health.ts:93-101
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retain local desktop ownership when live health omits desktop.

selectStatusStartupHealth returns any non-null live result without evaluating the local fallback. An accepted legacy proxy can return startup health without desktop. If the local Linux diagnostic reports desktop.owned, doctor still discards that claim and can recommend ocx service repair instead of the desktop-owned “Start at Login” guidance.

Merge the local desktop diagnostic only when the live result omits it:

Suggested fix
 export function selectStatusStartupHealth(
   liveStartup: StartupHealth | null,
   fallback: () => StartupHealth,
 ): StartupHealth {
-  return liveStartup ?? fallback();
+  if (!liveStartup || liveStartup.desktop !== undefined) return liveStartup ?? fallback();
+  const localStartup = fallback();
+  return localStartup.desktop === undefined
+    ? liveStartup
+    : { ...liveStartup, desktop: localStartup.desktop };

merge its desktop value into the live result when available. Keep the live
