Summary

  • Grok Build turns routed to OpenAI models on the ChatGPT Codex backend (for example gpt-6-astra) got almost no prompt-cache reuse: 13.6% cached input over 88 requests, all affinity: new_bind, against 97.1% for the same model from Codex.
  • Cause: Grok sends its conversation as x-grok-conv-id and the body prompt_cache_key, but never the session_id header. The Codex backend only reuses a warmed prefix when session_id is present, and opencodex reads the same header for request-log conversation identity and reasoning-replay scope. Codex pool account affinity is keyed on thread-id/session-id (hyphen) and is unchanged by this PR; with several pool accounts a Grok conversation can still move between accounts, which is a separate follow-up.
  • Fix: new src/grok/session-identity.ts. On the managed Grok surface (x-opencodex-grok: 1), when the caller sent no session_id/session-id/thread-id, a well-formed x-grok-conv-id is promoted to session_id before handleResponses. The rewritten Request keeps the unread body and the caller's abort signal. Explicit caller session headers still win, and non-Grok callers are untouched.

Closes #6481

Verification

  • Live A/B against a running 2.76.0 proxy, replaying one captured Grok body (≈16.7k input tokens) three times: no session_id → cached_tokens 0/0/0; session_id = prompt_cache_key → 0/16640/16640.
  • Captured Grok 1.0.46 requests through a logging proxy: bodies are append-only across turns (identical tools, input a strict prefix), and x-grok-conv-id equals prompt_cache_key on main turns; the title request sends the header empty and is left alone.
  • tests/providers/xai/grok-session-identity.test.ts: helper cases plus a handleResponses case asserting the upstream ChatGPT request carries session_id and the request log gets a conversation id. That case fails (session_id = null) with the wrapper removed. A source-oracle case pins the serve-options.ts call site.
  • bun x tsc --noEmit — pass.
  • bun run structure:check — pass.
  • bun run test:changed — 2767 pass / 1 skip / 0 fail.
  • Focused batch (tests/providers/xai, test-layout guards, core-lab-boundary, claude-native-affinity, codex-metadata-integrity): the only failures are 7 in xai-refresh-lock.test.ts, which also fail on unmodified dev in the same batch and pass when that file runs alone.
  • Full bun run test was not run locally (machine resources); left to CI.
  • Independent reviewer pass: PASS, no blockers (checked admission lanes, Anthropic/xAI/Kiro consumers, Request clone body/abort behavior).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Marked Grok requests can now use a valid conversation ID as their session ID when no session or thread ID is already provided.
    • Requests with an existing session or thread ID, or an invalid conversation ID, are left unchanged. Other request handling remains unaffected.

…ixes stay warm

Grok Build sends its conversation identity as x-grok-conv-id and the body
prompt_cache_key but never the session_id header Codex clients send. The
ChatGPT Codex backend only reuses a warmed prefix when session_id is present,
and opencodex reads the same header for thread affinity and conversation
logging, so every Grok turn on an OpenAI model was a cold new_bind
(13.6% cached input vs 97.1% for the same model from Codex).

On the managed Grok surface (x-opencodex-grok: 1) with no caller session
header, promote a well-formed x-grok-conv-id to session_id before
handleResponses. An explicit session_id/session-id/thread-id still wins.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The /v1/responses route now promotes eligible Grok conversation IDs to session_id before calling handleResponses. Tests cover promotion rules, request preservation, upstream request fields, and conversation logging.

Changes

Grok session identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Grok session ID eligibility and request rewrite
src/grok/session-identity.ts, tests/providers/xai/grok-session-identity.test.ts
grokConversationSessionId accepts a trimmed conversation ID only for marked Grok requests that lack recognized session headers and have a valid ID. withGrokSessionIdentity adds an eligible ID as session_id; otherwise, it returns the original request. Tests cover rejection cases and preservation of the body, abort signal, and original headers.
Responses route integration and validation
src/server/index/serve-options.ts, tests/providers/xai/grok-session-identity.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The POST /v1/responses route passes the wrapped request to handleResponses. The integration test checks the upstream URL, session_id, prompt_cache_key, response status, and conversation logging. The test-layout files map the test to providers/xai.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/test-layout/layout.json: Adds grok-session-identity.test.ts to the explicit test-layout mapping under providers/xai.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/grok/session-identity.ts: Adds constants for the Grok surface and conversation headers, recognized existing session-header aliases, and an ID pattern. The exported helper promotes a trimmed conversation ID only for the marked managed Grok surface, when no recognized session header exists and the ID matches the pattern; otherwise it returns undefined.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/grok/session-identity.ts: Adds a request wrapper that returns the original request if no eligible Grok session ID is found; otherwise it creates a request with session_id set to that ID.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/server/index/serve-options.ts: Adds the withGrokSessionIdentity import used by the Responses request handler.

P1 Badge Update the owned Grok architecture document

This introduces a new runtime contract under src/grok/, but the commit changes no structure document even though the ownership table maps this source area to structure/runtime.md. Document the session-identity promotion and its boundary there so the architecture record remains synchronized with the runtime behavior.

P2 Badge Promote the Grok identity before turn admission

For a managed Grok request without ordinary session headers, runAdmittedHttpTurn still receives the original req and calls sessionLaneIdFromRequest(req.headers) before this callback runs, so the promoted session_id reaches handleResponses but not active-turn admission. When 64 identified lanes are already active, such a Grok conversation therefore bypasses MAX_ACTIVE_SESSION_LANES as a sessionless request, and its lane accounting is also omitted. Construct the promoted request before calling runAdmittedHttpTurn and pass that same request through admission and response handling.

Exercise the /v1/responses route in the Grok integration test.

At tests/providers/xai/grok-session-identity.test.ts:111-116, the test calls withGrokSessionIdentity itself, then invokes handleResponses directly. If the route stops wrapping requests, this test can still assert the upstream session_id. Send the Grok case through the server route and assert the captured upstream header.
