Closes #5270

Summary

  • Add a minimal MCP tool bridge for Qoder so structured tool_use output is returned to Codex as Responses function_call items while Codex remains the sole owner of approval, sandboxing, and actual tool execution.
  • Keep Qoder built-in tools disabled with --tools "" and --max-turns 1, preserve native tool call IDs, and support multi-tool continuation without adding a parallel execution layer.
  • Add bounded, request-scoped MCP catalog staging. Deliberate catalog validation/admission failures fail locally with 400 / invalid_request_error / tool_catalog_invalid before Qoder is spawned; unexpected catalog-construction exceptions are no longer rewritten as client errors and instead propagate through the existing run-turn error path.
  • Complete Qoder tool turns only from the CLI's explicit assistant.message.stop_reason === "tool_use" signal. The previous 300 ms quiet fallback is removed; silence is never treated as successful completion.
  • Narrow unforced store:false retention to an explicit Qoder opt-in, and only when the completed response actually contains a pending function_call needed for a later previous_response_id + function_call_output continuation. Text-only Qoder responses and non-opted-in providers are not retained by this exception.
  • Keep Qoder-specific policy under src/adapters/qoder/; shared changes are limited to reusable coding-agent bridge primitives and the minimum Responses continuation plumbing needed by the Qoder path.

Design notes

  • buildCodingAgentToolCatalog owns a small CodingAgentToolCatalogError type for the six intentional catalog refusals: tool-count limit, invalid name/namespace, name-byte limit, per-definition byte limit, aggregate catalog-byte limit, and allowed-tools argv-byte limit. Qoder maps only that typed error to tool_catalog_invalid; other exceptions are rethrown unchanged.
  • Tool-turn completion is event-driven. The shared parser can observe both message_stop and assistant.message.stop_reason === "tool_use", but each adapter selects one authoritative completion signal. The shared default remains message_stop; Qoder explicitly selects assistant_tool_use_stop.
  • An authoritative Qoder stop with an incomplete tool call fails closed with protocol_error. There is no timer-based success path.
  • Restricted store:false continuation eligibility is selected by the serving adapter via adapterNeedsToolCallContinuation; currently only Qoder opts in. Shared response state admits such an unforced store:false response only when that opt-in is present and the response contains an actual pending function_call.
  • The retained entry keeps the existing unforcedStoreFalse replay gate, TTL, snapshot, spill/reload, and memory-budget controls. The Qoder eligibility option itself is not persisted. Kiro/Cursor forced continuation and passthrough force:true remain unchanged.
  • Qoder catalog projection preserves wire identities and order. Schemas are preserved except for the Responses-only encrypted marker stripped during projection.

Maintainer follow-ups

The current validated PR head addresses the four concerns raised in the maintainer review:

  • Empty test catch {} hygiene issue: resolved.
  • Broad Qoder catalog catch: resolved. Only CodingAgentToolCatalogError maps to 400 tool_catalog_invalid; unexpected exceptions propagate unchanged through existing run-turn error handling.
  • 300 ms quiet fallback: resolved. Removed completely; Qoder completion uses explicit assistant_tool_use_stop.
  • Provider-wide store:false retention: resolved. Qoder explicitly opts in, and retention additionally requires an actual pending function_call.

CodeBuddy is intentionally unchanged beyond the shared bridge primitives already required by this PR; its separate broad-catch behavior is not expanded into this scope.

Verification

Current validated PR head: c79387474476be4d5c19b8b2fc50e5be7cc28fd4, based directly on dev at 0511f458f12674f63bf3b629a0523cee246d33a0.

The existing single implementation commit was rebased in place from the previously validated PR head 34a7dc94c8236247c1b5f1454e6da8ab8d20cc50 onto the current dev tip above. The PR number, review history, and one-commit implementation shape were preserved; no merge or extra implementation commit was added.

Validation on the local candidate used the existing FN safe-exec isolation, sequentially, with Bun 1.4.0 and no real-provider calls:

  • Qoder adapter + Qoder MCP + shared CodeBuddy bridge focused tests: 97 pass, 0 fail across 4 files.
  • Responses store:false continuation tests: 19 pass, 0 fail.
  • Test-layout tooling after syncing onto current dev: 16 pass, 0 fail.
  • CLI dispatch coverage for the overlapping src/cli/index.ts integration: 73 pass, 0 fail (including 12 new upstream tests).
  • Total focused tests: 205 pass, 0 fail.
  • GOMAXPROCS=2 bun x tsc --noEmit: PASS.
  • bun run structure:check: PASS.
  • git diff --check upstream/dev...HEAD: PASS.

The candidate was synchronized by rebasing the existing single implementation commit onto the exact current dev tip. The 19 upstream commits since the previously validated base e53c8077e40b6f540bf1e5d5791a55282466bfac overlapped only src/cli/index.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, and tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json. The rebase applied without conflicts. All current upstream behavior and layout entries were preserved; all 24 non-overlapping PR files remain byte-identical, and the added/removed lines across all 27 PR files are unchanged.

Commands run sequentially through /home/orange/bin/safe-exec in the candidate worktree (Bun test isolation, one internal worker, unchanged 2 GiB resource limit):

bun run test --parallel=1 ./tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts ./tests/providers/qoder-mcp-server.test.ts ./tests/providers/codebuddy-tool-bridge-turn.test.ts ./tests/providers/codebuddy-tool-bridge.test.ts
bun run test --parallel=1 ./tests/responses/responses-state-store-false.test.ts
bun run test --parallel=1 ./tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts
bun run test --parallel=1 ./tests/cli/cli-dispatch.test.ts
GOMAXPROCS=2 bun x tsc --noEmit
bun run structure:check
git diff --check upstream/dev...HEAD

The full local suite was not run under the documented focused-validation exception: this is a bounded dev-sync task on a resource-limited FN host, and the author-authorized scope is focused regression coverage rather than the full suite. Broader and cross-platform coverage remains for current-head CI; unrun or approval-gated workflows are not claimed as passes.

Full-suite, stress, and new real-Qoder/provider calls were not run. Historical real-provider observations are not claimed as validation of this candidate.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Qoder can use selected tools through an isolated, request-scoped MCP server. Invalid or oversized tool catalogs are rejected before Qoder starts.
    • Qoder tool turns complete only after a completed tool-use signal; silence and incomplete turns do not count as completion.
    • Responses marked store:false can be retained for matching function-call continuations, while text-only responses are not replayed.
  • Documentation

    • Updated Qoder provider guidance to describe tool support; image input remains unsupported.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Qoder now exposes selected client-declared tools through a request-scoped MCP server. Its coding-agent turn captures assistant tool-use frames and completes tool calls at the configured stop signal. Response state retains eligible unforced store:false function calls for matching continuations, including across spill and snapshot operations.

Changes

Qoder tool-call compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog validation and MCP serving
src/adapters/coding-agent/tool-catalog.ts, src/adapters/coding-agent/mcp-server.ts, src/adapters/codebuddy/mcp-server.ts, src/adapters/codebuddy/tool-bridge.ts, src/types/tools.ts, src/types.ts, src/cli/index.ts, tests/providers/qoder-mcp-server.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The catalog filters tools by toolChoice, validates names and size limits, and builds namespaced definitions. The shared MCP server advertises catalog tools without executing calls. CodeBuddy delegates serving to the shared helper, and the CLI handles the Qoder MCP entrypoint.
Qoder tool-call capture and turn handling
src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts, src/adapters/qoder/scaffold-guard.ts, src/adapters/coding-agent/protocol.ts, src/adapters/coding-agent/turn.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/guides/providers.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md, tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts
Qoder configures a request-scoped MCP bridge when selected tools or a required tool call are present. The coding-agent turn parses assistant tool-use frames, maps tool names in history, and completes the tool turn at the configured stop signal. Tests cover catalog validation, capture, replay, and completion conditions.

Unforced store:false continuation

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in src/adapters/codebuddy/mcp-server.ts: The direct MCP SDK imports were replaced with an import of the shared coding-agent MCP server helper.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/adapters/codebuddy/mcp-server.ts: runCodeBuddyMcpServer now passes the loaded tools and server name to serveCodingAgentMcpTools. This replaces the local server setup, tool-list and call handlers (including the handler that left tool calls pending), and stdin EOF/close exit listeners.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/adapters/codebuddy/tool-bridge.ts: Imports requiresToolCall from ../../types; the equivalent local function, which recognized "required" and choice objects with a name or mode: "required", was removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in src/adapters/codebuddy/tool-bridge.ts: Removed the local requiresToolCall implementation; callers now use the imported helper.

Explanation

The new src/responses/state/metrics.ts extracts ResponseStateMetrics and computeResponseStateMetrics from src/responses/state.ts. This refactor calculates response-state metrics but does not support Qoder tool capture, Codex-owned execution, or function-call continuation. The remaining documented and tested changes relate to the bridge or its continuation behavior.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated metrics extraction in src/responses/state/metrics.ts and restore the existing metrics implementation and type in src/responses/state.ts. Keep the response-state changes that retain pending function_call items for continuation.

라인 - tests/providers/qoder-adapter.test.ts · try { stdout.destroy(); } catch {} · 비어 있는 catch라 hygiene empty_catch가 막습니다.

라인 - src/adapters/qoder/adapter.ts · QODER_ASSISTANT_TOOL_QUIET_FALLBACK_MS = 300 · message_stop이 안 오면 0.3초 조용한 뒤 도구 턴을 끝냅니다.

Current-head intake checkpoint, not approval: head 16dcaee, dev base 33185c2. I saw the updated Verification section and 4/4 readiness attestation; the earlier a82740e verification wording is no longer the current description. The reported 235 focused passes/typecheck are author evidence, not tests I independently ran.

In the inspected stop-handling source, the 300ms quiet-success fallback is absent, and both the stream-loop synthesis and EOF check use sawSelectedToolTurnStop. Qoder selects assistant_tool_use_stop; CodeBuddy's default remains message_stop. This addresses the two earlier CodeRabbit stop-condition concerns at source level, but is not runtime or native-CLI verification by me.

I prepared an exact-head isolated review worktree but deferred local test execution because another host's-workspace workload was already running typecheck/E2E processes. I did not overlap test jobs, raise resource limits, kill that work, or call the real provider/CLI. No new scan was initiated.

Remaining gates: Cross-platform CI 37203140685, Service lifecycle 37203140667, and React Doctor 37203140682 are action_required, not completed passes. Required current-head CI and explicit boundary-review/sponsorship obligations remain separate from the readiness boxes. The shared unforced store:false retention is also broader than Qoder and survives snapshot/spill reload: the owner's scope decision raised in the earlier maintainer comment is not established by this static checkpoint or author attestation. No PR approval, integration, or issue closure is being recorded here.

Thanks for the bridge, @juzijia. Maintainer review found a few defects on the Qoder path and in the merged result. I pushed the fixes to this branch rather than asking for another round. Final head: f962dfea85.

  • 864d4b4bf5: Only Qoder projects prior tool calls with CLI-emitted (mcp__…) names, through projectHistoryToolNames. CodeBuddy history keeps the bare request name byte for byte. The commit also compacts two test-layout registrations and rewraps the Qoder catalog paragraph, because the merge with dev pushed layout.json to 2,000 lines and structure/providers-and-adapters.md to 602.
  • c05091b966: Restricted store:false continuation now covers custom_tool_call/custom_tool_call_output as well as function calls. Complete assistant tool calls and the synthesized done(tool_use) require a validated system/init handshake. Complete calls are charged to the translator budget like partial ones. Completed call IDs are tracked.
  • 8b6ca4d9a8: Complete and partial representations share one identity ledger. An exact repeat is suppressed, and a conflicting reuse fails with protocol_error in either order. Restricted replay fails closed when providerOutputStart is missing or invalid, including after snapshot hydration and spill reload.
  • 3a217f92c9: Merge of dev (the branch was still at 2.78.0, which fails release-version-line), followed by 5465e1dbc9 to fit the line budgets again.
  • 5e311003b8 / f962dfea85: Distinct call IDs count toward the 16-call turn limit separately from open blocks, so an open exact repeat doesn't take a slot. Open capture blocks keep their own 16-block bound, and names are validated before any allocation.

Each step was checked by an independent exact-head review, and the final head was approved. Focused Qoder, CodeBuddy and Responses-state tests, typecheck, structure:check, the file-size ratchet and the test-layout guards pass locally. Hosted CI on f962dfea85 is running.
