Auto dark mode seems to get stuck

I recently enabled dark mode and the sync with OS setting. However, I regularly have problems with Gmail getting stuck in one mode or the other. For example:

• When macOS auto switches mode, Gmail either doesn't switch or only partially switches e.g. background goes dark, but the inbox does not.
• When I wake my Mac in the morning, Gmail is still in dark mode and doesn't switch until I reload the page.
• When the mode gets stuck sometimes manually switching via Option+D doesn't work either.

Both the keyboard shortcut and auto-switching work for me in Firefox 144. See below. Maybe it is an issue with Zen.

I will say that this feature is brittle. What I'm actually doing is simulating a series of clicks to change the Gmail theme (why you see the theme dlialogue flicker in the video) which I then enhance to deliver dark mode. The dark theme never shows up in quick settings and even if it did, clicking on a theme in quick settings does not always change the theme (or at least it was unreliable when I built this feature).

Sometimes this series of clicks fails. I've never been able to pin point why. But as someone who uses this every day, I find it works >95% of the time for me and I don't get many bug reports. When it doesn't work, the keyboard shortcut or a refresh of Gmail usually fixes it.

I'll leave this open to see if I can make it more resiliant or performant. I might also be able to catch when it fails and try again when the view changes.
