Thanks @akolson -- manual QA confirms that this resolves the responsiveness issue on non-search recommendations displays, and also resolves some of the mobile display overflow problems! I've also tried on the search recommendations display and don't see any issues/regressions there as a result.
Holding off on merge just to check in with QA team re: timing of merge to hotfixes, but this is good to go
