For anyone else just as confused as me, a reverse DNS lookup for the IP in question does indeed still output the same same domain name, including the slash character.

My quick research about validity landed me on this page, that explicitly states that some asigning authorities requires the forward slash as part of the PTR entries for classless reverse DNS zones: https://help.dyn.com/finding-your-reverse-dns-zone-name/
