[Bug]: "Error in Laravel Extension" when opening VSCode

At the opening of Visual Studio Code :

As soon as extensions are activated, an error (not detailed) appears when the Laravel extension is loaded :

Then the extension doesn't work (no functionality appears).

all you need to do is to

1. download the PHP zip => https://windows.php.net/download
2. extract to folder
3. add folder to c drive
4. add the path to environment variables
   this worked for me

With Laravel Extension version 0.1.17.

So :

• If php path is on D:/<...>/ = error
• If php path is at the root of C:/ = work

also you can use herd PHP by add
C:\Users\username.config\herd\bin to environment variables

I had the same error. In case it helps someone else, for me it was because php was in 2 different PATHs.
I have removed 1 and now is starting without errors.

I agree: this looks like it's due to the path to the php bin being declared more than once (in Windows at least). I was able to resolve the issue by ensuring that the only instance of the path (%USERPROFILE%.config\herd\bin) was in the SYSTEM PATH

I'm also getting same issue in Windows 11.

I'm using Laragon with PHP 8.3 version installed in D drive.

In Windows, I noticed one thing in this line:

Checking local PHP installation: php -r 'echo PHP_BINARY;'

The syntax used in the reported command does not work in Windows, where double quotes should be used.
It seems that the command is used to detect the PHP version available in the environment, and this is why the next line reports:

Falling back to system PHP installation

This may be the cause of errors that appear soon after the extension has started.
If this is the case, maybe it could be fixed using the double-quotes syntax, as it works on both Windows and Linux:

php -r "echo PHP_BINARY;"

I solved it by changing the single quotes to double quotes. Go to the extension path, which should be located at:
C:\Users\{yourusername}\.vscode\extensions\laravel.vscode-laravel-1.0.7\dist
Inside this folder, there should be a file named extension.js.
In the extension.js file, look for the line of code: check: "php -r 'echo PHP_BINARY;'",
Swap the double quotes for single quotes and vice versa, so it should look like this in the end:
check: 'php -r "echo PHP_BINARY;"'
This worked wonderfully. Windows conflicts with the quotes.
