No maps in background

Background maps are not displayed.
I tryed Mapink, Cycle Map and Mapquest Open
Xiaomi Mi6 - Android 8.0.0

I noticed this a few days ago, suddenly. Map tiles download doesn't work anymore, looks like Openstreetmap.org currently blocks requests with the agent string "osmdroid". Can be verified for example with Curl.

Change the agent string either (as proof of concept) via proxy or permanently by modifying source code and it works again.

I'd suggest using a sensible user agent - "osmdroid" is just the default library name and will get this app mixed in with thousands of others.

Better yet, allow users to customise the tile background? It'd be great if I could see my own map tiles here, not just one layer from osm.org.

I am not the maintainer of the OSMTracker project. But if you urgently need a solution for the background maps issue, you can download my fork of the repository from here:

https://github.com/icrf2000/osmtracker-android/

and compile it for you. The branch "hz02_combine_03" contains a fix for this particular issue. Besides several other modifications.

the software is great, but not having maps is a bit of a nuisance.

We apologize for the delay publishing the changes. The changes that fix this issue are in beta version on the play store but we are still having some issues related to android 9 version. As soon as we fix this the new stable version will be published.
