Avconv is a useful utility to record video and audio. It also can convert multiple video/audio formats. In this repository I have included a script to record audio/video and multiple desktop drag and drop items to convert between formats.
- Debian or derivative distribution with Gnome Desktop
- Packages libav-tools and pulseaudio which can be installed from repositories:
apt install libav-tools pulseaudio-
The script to record audio and video is called avconv_recording.sh and it is in the main folder of the repo. If you record audio, the file generated will be put in the folder recorded_audio. Needless to say, if you record video, the file will be put in recorded_video.

The desktop items to convert by drag and drop are as well in the main folder of the repo as you can see. Let's say you have a mp3 file you want to convert to wav format. All you have to do is drag and drop the to_wav desktop item. This item will call the corresponding script in the scripts folder and will do the conversion for you, opening a terminal and showing the process to you. Once the conversion is completed, the new file will be placed under a folder called converted.
- There are also drag and drop items you can use to convert mp4, extract audio from them... the output files will be also added under the converted folder.
