You are using JGit, which unfortunately has its head buried in the sand and refuses to support git work trees despite the fact that they have been a git feature for a decade now.

According to the releases notes for JGit v7.0.0 worktrees read support was added

Yes, I saw in the comments something about only supporting read. I don't know if this will cause any issues or if it was an old comment.
It also requires Java 17. The plugin is currently possible to use with java 8. Maybe it is now ok to require java 17.

There is definitely no reason to stick with Java 8. Java 17 is pretty much the minimum any more.

Don't know if it is of any help but there is the simple Git plugin (https://github.com/rcw3bb/simple-git) which defines git task types. It does not use JGit but just invokes git from the command line which is another way to go

Version 0.14.0 of the plugin now uses jgit 7.1. It looks like it works great with work-trees.
