add an option to customize pop-up max width

not an issue as is, i'm just quite bothered by the changed made in #5231

would it be possible to add an option to customize our own max width in the config by any chance please?

another solution could be: make it an option, options defaults to the current values you choose, and let the option to customize and even disable-able it to get back the old behavior, if possible

No, I don't want to add an option for this.

You don't say why it bothers you. My guess is that it's just that you're used to the old look, and can't get used to the new one. I can understand that, I had the same initial reaction. Just give it a bit of time, you will get used to it. (Imagine if lazygit had the new behavior from the beginning -- you would never have noticed.)

it is bothering me when:

• you have to write long commit names & description, which is common at my work (even if, i agree, it's def not the best place to write alot)
• feels really narrow when you open lazygit on a big screen (i personally like being able to see a lot)

i've tried accommodating myself for over a week now but it keeps tingling me :/

tbh i'm kinda surprised you're against it, considering how customizable lazygit can get and considering how those values, as you said, "are a little arbitrary", why wouldnt i be able to set my own arbitrary values then?

I'm confused; did you turn off the git.commit.autoWrapCommitMessage config? It's on by default, set to 72 columns by default, and this was actually the main reason to limit the width of the commit message panel; it looks kind of stupid when there's a lot of blank space to the right of your auto-wrapped text.

Oh, we disagree here. Commit messages are a great place to write lots of text, but this is besides the point.

Yes, I had the same initial feeling, but got used to it. One reason why I limited the panel width is that wrapped text is easier to read if lines aren't so long. There are tons of studies about that, see e.g. https://www.uxpin.com/studio/blog/optimal-line-length-for-readability/.

In early days we went a bit overboard with adding configs for anything that people might want to customize. I think that's a mistake; the config docs get overwhelming, and it makes it hard to find the really important options among all those that only very few people want. I'm trying to be a lot more cautious about adding configs now.
