Amazon ending MOBI support in Send to Kindle service

Per this article, Amazon will be phasing out support for the MOBI format in the Send to Kindle service.

Describe the solution you'd like

Calibre-web currently has the ability to convert to MOBI and email books, it would be prudent to update this process to convert to AZW3.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Converting to EPUB before sending could also be a valid alternative, but seems less ideal since EPUBs will be immediately converted to AZW3 by Amazon before delivery.

I haven't tried it yesterday but for me late 2022 is not today.

I think that refers to the dedicated apps used to send, rather than sending via email. I just sent a test book and it showed up correctly, progress sync is also working between my Kindle and the Android app.

Seconded, I was able to send a .epub file to my Send to Kindle email address & it showed up in the library (missing cover art, but otherwise seemingly intact).

EPUB is available for send-to-Kindle now, but using Calibre to do the send, sometimes the formatting is a mess. Recent books by James Rollins are an example.

This would be a great tweak, as the current send to kindle now seems to be broken with the loss of MOBI support.

Would it be possible to add some options to update/modify the epub when sending the epub file to Amazon? Seems their conversion method is a bit lacking.

For example if the book is encoded with something else than UTF-8 the text comes out malformated, so it would be great if we could apply some custom modifications like set the encoding before sending?

That way we could figure out a best known configuration that can be set as a default sending profile?
