Feature request: match missing default hook functionality as `pre-commit` does

Thank you for the amazing tool!

Since the tool covers pre-commit functionality, it would be nice to have this feature.

With the pre-commit tool, there might be the default pre-commit-config.yaml at ~/.config/pre-commit/pre-commit-config.yaml. If the config file is in the project root is missing, it falls back to the default.

Now, prek is not allowing us to set a global hook for all the repos

No, I don't think pre-commit supports global configs. Do you have a source for that?

In my setup, I am using a global git hook that is set with git config, and it points to the default pre-commit (prek) file.

to run the hook, i can use something like git hook run pre-commit -- --all-files

With pre-commit, it was impossible to use nested files, but prek allows it, and unfortunately, i have a private project where this feature is convenient. In the other hand, only a single config can be provided, and nexted configs are ignored

i suppose that with some stretch, this might be connected with #1238 , with the only diff being that to make my issue work, I'll use a local path.

For me, even will work just the fallback to the fallback (default) config, like ~/.config/prek/fallback_config.yaml without merging. it how it was before, and it's totally ok for my needs.

tbh, i used this spike for pre-commit for years and forgot how things were. Hope all of it makes sense

If I’m understanding you right, the problem is that your repo has multiple .pre-commit-config.yaml files, but your global git hook always runs prek with --config <file>, so any nested .pre-commit-config.yaml files just get ignored. Is that what’s happening?

Yes. So it would be great to have an option (flag) to include nested files in the run.

Try changing your git hook to something like this:
