knn_search abnormal behavior when knn > 2048 using GPU, return all 0 or very large random integer array #7301

Describe the issue

The open3d.core.nns.NearestNeighborSearch will return an indices inside are all 0 or random integers, when knn > 2048 when using GPU.

And running normal when using CPU.

Only Related Issue #6108

Background:

I try to use the indices given by knn_search to index the pcd open3d.t.geometry.PointCloud, however, it always give an error below

RuntimeError: [Open3D Error] (void open3d::core::__OPEN3D_CUDA_CHECK(cudaError_t, const char*, int)) /root/Open3D/cpp/open3d/core/CUDAUtils.cpp:309: /root/Open3D/cpp/open3d/core/MemoryManagerCUDA.cpp:78 CUDA runtime error: an illegal memory access was encountered

Finally, I found that when knn is large, the indices given by knn_search will be

  1. All 0
  2. Some or All very large number (> number of total points)
  3. May be have negative sometime (maybe is too large make it overflow, leading to being misinterpret)
