Boyo is a modular, lightweight Gameboy and Gameboy Color emulator designed to be platform-agnostic. It is compatible with the majority of the commercial game library and passes a significant number of hardware conformance tests.
- Emulates both the original Gameboy (DMG) and Gameboy Color (CGB)
- Runs the majority of the commercial game library
- Written in C (using C2x/C23 features)
- Modular architecture allowing for simple creation of new frontends
- SDL2 frontend for easy porting to different operating systems and platforms
- Supports both keyboard input and SDL-compatible Gamepads
To build Boyo, you will need a modern, up-to-date C compiler supporting C2x/C23 (like gcc), and make. The SDL2 development libraries are also required for the SDL2 frontend.
Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libsdl2-devmacOS (Homebrew):
brew install sdl2You can compile Boyo for either the original Gameboy or the Gameboy Color.
git clone https://github.com/imchristina/boyo.git
cd boyoFor Gameboy (DMG):
makeFor Gameboy Color (CGB):
make CGB=1Run make clean before building a different target.
Boyo requires original BIOS bootroms to function. You must provide these files yourself. These files are loaded from the current working directory.
- DMG Mode: Requires
dmg_boot.bin - CGB Mode: Requires
cgb_boot.bin
./boyo path/to/rom.gbNote: Boyo currently runs in a window matching the native Gameboy resolution. Window scaling is not yet supported.
Boyo supports keyboard input and SDL-compatible game controllers.
