Summary

Worker-side follow-up to MOT-4736 and the merged Compose change iii-hq/iii#2212.

  • Honor III_CONFIG_NAME throughout configuration registration, reads, writes and change subscriptions in workers that previously used fixed entry IDs. Preserve the standalone legacy fallback and stable UI form/callback identities.
  • Seed defaults or an explicit configuration file only when the entry has no stored value. Schema refresh must not overwrite a Compose-delivered override or operator edit.
  • Distinguish uppercase missing-entry NOT_FOUND from lowercase service/routing function_not_found, including state, pubsub, queue and bridge. Add regression tests.
  • Expose namespace-scoped, internal <worker>::configuration-id functions for Console/IDE/HTTP/Voice/Security Scan/approval-gate consumers. Update browser and cross-worker consumers to use the addressed instance's ID, with no fallback to another project's global entry.
  • Preserve unrelated fields and raw environment templates during read-modify-write operations; update configuration guidance.

Validation

Before rebasing onto current main:

  • All 2,164 library tests across the 15 classifier-fix workers passed: no failures, ignored tests or filters (cargo test --lib).
  • 461 TypeScript worker tests, 12 OpenWiki configuration tests, 29 frontend/helper tests, Rust identity tests and four affected UI builds passed during implementation.
  • Separate isolated validation: 15 checks covering worker regressions, real engine/store behavior, Compose override delivery, namespace isolation and configuration events passed.
  • Six additional real-runtime scenarios passed: production register_config/fetch_config for state, pubsub, queue, bridge and memory-consolidate over WebSocket against the real engine; first-boot seeding and stored override preservation. With only configuration::get fault-injected to return function_not_found, state's production registration failed without overwriting the existing value.
  • External E2E drivers are in a separate validation folder, not committed to this PR. They are configuration-path tests, not a complete boot of every adapter/worker.

After rebasing onto 852b87e82:

  • Formatting checks for changed Rust files and git diff --check passed.
  • Repository PR/catalog validators passed for all 52 affected workers selected by CI discovery (including shared-crate dependents).
  • Final GitHub CI is green for 4c43d9b4ae5ed0ab32b5932e70771ddfc61dca13: 193 successful checks, 7 skipped, no failures or pending checks. Both Console Playwright and the SQLite/PostgreSQL/MySQL E2E workflow passed.
  • CI follow-ups fixed formatting, synchronized eval snapshots with main, and made the configuration-identity request types accept engine-injected caller metadata. The identity protocol regression failed before the fix and passed afterward.
  • A separate commit fixes a pre-existing PostgreSQL native-capture installation race exposed by CI: transaction-scoped advisory locking prevents concurrent replacements of the shared notify function. A real PostgreSQL regression (16 registrations, two pools, two tables) failed before the fix and passed afterward; CI PostgreSQL 16 also passed. No assertions, timeouts or CI gates were weakened.

Review and compatibility

  • Reviewed with Claude Code / Opus 4.8; the reported classifier issue was validated against engine code and corrected with regression tests.
  • The rebase retained main's equivalent iii-directory seed fix; this PR no longer changes that file.
  • Existing legacy configuration entries are not automatically migrated. An explicit Compose config_name can retain a legacy entry.
  • UI consumers require the new identity endpoint in the addressed worker. Missing identity discovery fails rather than reading/writing another project's configuration.
  • No worker dependency or lockfile changes. No protocol or engine changes in this PR.

CI monitoring completed. This PR remains Draft as requested; it has not been marked Ready or merged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

    • Evaluation results can optionally include prompt fallback details and prompt fingerprints.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Existing configuration overrides are preserved instead of being overwritten by startup defaults.
    • Missing-entry handling now distinguishes genuine missing configurations from service failures.
    • Improved concurrent database trigger installation reliability.
    • HTTP, approval-gate, IDE, console, voice, and security-scan settings resolve configuration entries consistently.
  • Documentation

    • Updated guidance for identity discovery, namespacing, and safe configuration seeding.

Make default seeding atomic. All seven callers read the entry and then register it with initial_value. The configuration client documents that configuration::register replaces the stored value when initial_value is supplied. Therefore, an operator update between those RPCs can be overwritten by the seed.

Apply this to browser, codex, database, devin, github, grok, and harness. Use an atomic create-if-absent or expected-version operation.

Confirmed against the actual engine implementation. The current configuration API has no atomic create-if-absent or expected-version operation: register accepts id/name/description/schema/initial_value/metadata, and set accepts id/value. A supplied initial_value replaces the stored value, while metadata-only registration also needs serialization against set to avoid stale writes.

To be precise, set on a never-registered ID returns NOT_REGISTERED. The reachable races are an existing null placeholder updated between lookup and seeding, or concurrent registrars that both observed absence and supply different seeds.

I am implementing the required engine-side atomic initialization in a separate branch/PR, followed by the worker-side integration and deterministic concurrency tests. This will not be papered over with a client-local lock, an extra read, or a request flag silently ignored by older engines. Compatibility behavior will be explicit.

The error-classification and documentation fixes are also being validated. This thread remains open until the implementation and verification are complete; it is not being deferred as a resolved follow-up.

@guibeira, obrigado pela verificação detalhada.

Learning: In the configuration integration, `configuration::register` accepts `{id,name,description,schema,initial_value,metadata}` and replaces the stored value when `initial_value` is supplied. `configuration::set` accepts only `{id,value}`. Neither operation supports conditional create, expected-version checks, or shared serialization. Therefore, worker-side read-then-register seeding cannot atomically preserve an intervening operator update; a complete fix requires a compatible engine operation that conditionally initializes an absent or null entry under the same serialization as `configuration::set`.

The engine implementation is now published in Draft: iii-hq/iii#2214 (commit f7a6e44be). It introduces configuration::ensure, which conditionally seeds absent/null entries under the same mutation serialization as register/set/delete, and preserves legacy register semantics for intentional operator/Compose writes. The bridge adapter delegates the original candidate to the authoritative remote ensure operation rather than forwarding an unsafe locally chosen initial_value. Missing remote support fails closed.

Initial engine validation passed: 83 configuration unit tests and 6 in-process engine/FsAdapter integration tests, including deterministic concurrent seeding and register-vs-set cases. Remote CI is running. The worker-side migration is the next step.

This remains a cross-repository dependency: the engine capability must be available before the workers rely on it. I will not close this thread or fall back to the unsafe old registration path merely to keep tests green against an older engine. The thread remains open until the companion implementation and validation are complete.

@guibeira, thank you for the update.

configuration::ensure addresses the required atomicity boundary. Its conditional initialization and shared mutation serialization prevent the read-then-register overwrite race.

The worker migration must use this operation after the engine capability is available. A missing capability must continue to fail closed. The thread remains open until the worker-side migration and integration validation are complete.

@guibeira, the reported migration design addresses the atomicity requirement.

configuration::ensure removes the client-side read-then-register race. The fail-closed behavior is correct when an engine does not support ensure. The reported policy coverage and override-preservation tests are relevant validation.

The local commit cc2f76f75 is not available in this pull request. I cannot verify its implementation or its test results here. Keep this thread open until the worker migration is pushed, the engine dependency is available, and remote CI completes successfully.

The engine prerequisite is now fully validated at iii-hq/iii#2214, head e6842866f: all applicable GitHub checks are green, CodeRabbit found no new blockers, and all five pre-merge checks passed (official docstring coverage: 97.41%). The queued filesystem-event issue found during review was fixed and its thread resolved.

The companion worker migration is locally committed as cc2f76f75 and has passed the real production configuration-path E2E against this engine, including preservation and explicit fail-closed behavior when ensure is unavailable. It remains unpushed only because the worker CI still installs an engine without the required function.

The remaining dependency is release ordering: maintainer authorization to make the engine capability available, then update the worker test/runtime reference and push the validated migration. I have not merged either PR, silently repinned CI to an unmerged revision, or introduced an unsafe old-engine fallback. This thread remains open until the migration is present in the PR and its remote CI has passed.

@guibeira, thanks for the status update.

The engine prerequisite is validated, but the worker migration commit cc2f76f75 is not present in this PR. I cannot verify the migration or its remote CI results here.

Keep this thread open until the migration is pushed to this PR and remote CI passes against an engine version that provides configuration::ensure.

Learning: In iii-hq/iii draft PR `#2214`, the engine introduces `configuration::ensure`. It conditionally seeds only absent or null configuration entries under the same mutation serialization as `configuration::register`, `configuration::set`, and `configuration::delete`. The bridge adapter delegates the original candidate to the authoritative remote `ensure` operation, and missing remote support fails closed. Workers must migrate their read-then-register seeding flows to `configuration::ensure` once the engine capability is available.

The missing worker migration is now published separately in #1206. PR #1205 was merged before local commit cc2f76f75 was pushed; the follow-up cherry-picks that exact change onto merged main as 6dfdda4. Its final tree is identical to the code tested against the published v0.24.0-rc.2 release (42 Rust + 6 Node production configuration paths passed).

Engine PR iii-hq/iii#2214 is merged and included in that RC. The follow-up remains Draft while its remote CI/review runs. Worker latest releases are intentionally paused until the atomic migration is merged, so the published packages will contain the code actually validated. This thread is linked to the follow-up rather than being declared resolved by the earlier merge.

@guibeira, verification confirms that #1206 is open as a Draft at commit 6dfdda445d32a1890e5a0dd9e15802b6c60f4735.

The completed checks currently report success or skip status. Many required checks, including the browser checks, remain queued or in progress. The atomic-initialization finding therefore remains pending on #1206 until its review and required CI complete.

Qualify the seed overwrite guarantee.

The current seeders still perform a read-then-register sequence. A concurrent configuration::set or registrar can write after the read, and initial_value can then replace that write. Therefore, “never overwrites” and “existing stored value is preserved” are not unconditional guarantees.

Keep the limitation in lines 80-92, and qualify lines 63 and 76 to state that preservation applies only without concurrent initialization or editing. The engine-level conditional-initialization fix is already documented separately.

Addressed the outside-diff documentation comment in review 5256011190 in d4be570: the --config row and re-registration guidance now explicitly qualify preservation with the absence of concurrent initialization or editing. The existing concurrency-limitation section is retained.

The same commit fixes the anchored-error-envelope finding and adds a documented shared regression contract exercised by all 38 affected classifier implementations. Local validation completed successfully; remote CI and CodeRabbit's updated docstring-coverage report are pending.

The atomic-initialization thread remains open. The engine implementation is being validated in a separate worktree, including bridge-adapter behavior, before the companion PR and worker integration are published. No merge is planned until these dependencies are resolved.

Make configuration initialization atomic before merge.

If an operator writes the entry after try_get_value returns but before configuration::register runs, the supplied initial_value replaces that operator value.

Use an engine operation that conditionally initializes an absent or null entry under the same serialization as configuration::set.

Based on learnings, configuration::register replaces stored values when initial_value is present and provides no conditional-create or expected-version check.

Make default initialization atomic.

Each worker reads absence before it calls configuration::register with initial_value. An operator update between those operations is replaced by the registration. Use an engine operation that conditionally initializes an absent or null entry under the same serialization as configuration::set.

The anchored-parser commit d4be570 is green in CI (196 successful checks, 7 skipped). The latest review's remaining behavioral findings all concern atomic initialization; these are being handled together in the engine implementation and subsequent worker integration, not closed by documentation alone.

Pushed 8ad3c12, a documentation-only follow-up describing 18 reader, fallback, reload, and policy-helper contracts in configuration modules already involved in this PR. Biome and diff checks passed; no runtime behavior or test assertions changed. This addresses the remaining docstring warning (last reported 77.84%) without changing the coverage threshold. The updated remote metric is pending.

The engine-side ensure implementation has passed initial unit and integration tests. Its bridge-adapter behavior is being tightened so the atomic decision is made at the authoritative remote store rather than silently degrading to a legacy register. The atomicity thread remains open pending the companion PR, worker integration, and validation. Please keep subsequent discussion in English.
