Please note:
This official version of LWT is from the original author, and it is stable and bug-free.
All LWT forks that I found on the internet (e.g. from jzohrab, HugoFara, chaosarium, pirtleshell, andreask7, hans, and many more) are either outdated or faulty, even if they contain some new features or may have a cleaner source code.
The fork from jzohrab - called Lute (newest version see github.com/LuteOrg/lute-v3) - describes itself in many places on the web (e.g. on Reddit, YouTube) as the better LWT, but my extensive testing revealed a number of features that are worse than in the official LWT, or are completely missing. Furthermore, a number of serious software crashes occurred. Lute currently (Nov. 2025) has over 170 issues on GitHub but hasn't been updated since March 2025.
LWT is a tool for Language Learning, inspired by:
- Stephen Krashen's principles in Second Language Acquisition,
- Steve Kaufmann's LingQ application, and
- ideas from Khatzumoto - published at AJATT - All Japanese All The Time.
To run LWT, you'll need:
- a modern web browser,
- a local web and database server with PHP - like XAMPP, MAMP, LAMP,
- and the LWT application, which can be downloaded here.
NEW in 25.10.0: Now with Translate Shell (only on macOS and Linux).
