The [national bird](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_birds) of Saint Helena is the [Saint Helena plover](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Helena_plover "Saint Helena plover"), known locally as the wirebird, on account of its wire-like legs.
