JPEG2000 offers advantages over the original JPEG format in image resolution, compression, and encoding capabilities (see more details here). However, its adoption has been limited due to patent concerns. Although the core coding system is intended to be license-free, certain extensions might require licensing and royalty payments (as per Wikipedia). This patent issue has led to its deprecation in JAI (Java Advanced Imaging) and limited its widespread use :(

Its a valid feature request but, as you said, it doesn't have widespread use and so it is probably a low-priority feature request.

I'd argue PDF makes JPEG2000 rather widespread, though still of limited use, and the standards aren't open, AFAIK.
