"You are currently configured to use a Google Cloud Project but lack a Gemini Code Assist license." #19216
Anytime I try to login, it says "You are currently configured to use a Google Cloud Project but lack a Gemini Code Assist license. Please contact your administrator to request a license. (#3501) "
What did you expect to happen?
Logging in like I, and many people I know who use Gemini CLI do most of the time, because without setting project ID it just throws error. This wasn't an issue before.
Client information
(I'm not able to get through to login stage, impossible to obtain /about infromation. Both Windows and Linux OS, if that matters for some reason)
the same problem, it says "You are currently configured to use a Google Cloud Project but lack a Gemini Code Assist license. Please contact your administrator to request a license. (#3501) "
And Google still doesn't do or say anything. Neither "Nope, free stuff is over pay up" and neither "We are expericing issues/high demand, sorry, maybe in few weeks". Hell

Anything else we need to know?
No response
Are you using what Google calls "Gemini Code Assist for individuals", login with your personal google/gmail account)? I do and the problem for me only appears when using Gemini CLI on Cloud Shell. Every other attempt to use Gemini (CLI or chat, including local CLI) works just fine.
@srithreepo This is what we have on our side. At least we can log in and the model reply us again, but there is no gemini 3 options here in model menu. We did have that shown in the model menu before the hiccup (last Monday)
Select Model
● 1. gemini-2.5-pro
2. gemini-2.5-flash
3. gemini-2.5-flash-lite
Remember model for future sessions:false
(Press Tab to toggle)
Are you using Login with Google ? ( I believe so but just confirming )
Can you tell me what plan your account is using? Is it a Google AI Pro / Ultra ? Free tier? or is it a Gemini Code Assist using a GCP Project?
Can you lastly also tell me what tier you see when you either boot up Gemini CLI or use the / about or / stats command?
Hi All we have been able to mitigate this issue. Please try this and let us know if you are able to log in.
Additionally if possible, can you validate if you are able to see Gemini 3 in the /model section? (especially if you are using a Google AI Pro account to sign in?)
We are trying to identify the root cause why that was happening and hypothesize that it is affecting the same set of suers. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Main issue solved, thank you! I have not access to Gemini 3. Individual user account auth with gmail.
If someone has issues with Gemini 3 not being present while using projects - try in the google cloud project, in the admin for gemini section, turning on preview models in the settings menu.
...only have gemini 2.5 models, no v3 in all combinations.
To add, I saw the remark of CLI update "0.29.5 → 0.29.7", but I don't want to update at all. Our work has been delayed and the current workable setup is crucial to my team, thus don't want to risk the use of model v2.5 by updating CLI. Unless Gemini team clarifies that CLI update could fix these current issues, we would rather stay in our work then spinning up new environments to test.
My frineds here, let's imagine the day Gemini team fading out v2.5 models to path for something more advanced... with the model menu unstable/some showing and some are not. It's a nightmare catching us every day (even you paid).
(@yasuonakanishi-mobilus@RedBaron1914@Marcobi81@lolilolill )
@joenwtse-ux@Marcobi81 Do you have a Google Cloud Project configured through a GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT environment variable?
No project configured. Gemini CLi seems to run on a default project

To be cllear I wanted to make sure you did not have a project configured if you are using the free tier you should not be using a Google Cloud Project. Using it may cause issues like Gemini CLI Looking for a license and seeing that you dont have one
or for that matter blocking Gemini 3 based on admin controls for the Preview release channel.
For more details for when users need and dont need a GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT #13516
@srithreepo So you mean the cause of missing Gemini 3 in model menu is "Preview release channel" not enabled? If you confirm, one of our teammates would like to try this out as they have tried different setup during the down time, including usage of GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT or similar variables.
After carefully testing, I conclude that now CLI, while seeing cloud project(it lists GCP project in /about), but fully ignores it. And once again, through third party proxy with the same auth tokens, project and endpoints - it works. Seems that CLI code itself has issue somewhere. Can't explain it else.
@srithreepo Can you confirmed the conditions? We want to figure out what setup would be stable for use.
