Feature Request: Add progress indicators to `setup` and `newTrack` command workflows

Problem

Currently, users lack visibility into their progress when running the setup and newTrack commands. This can lead to uncertainty about how many steps are remaining in the workflow.

Proposed Solution

Add a progress indicator at the start of each step in these command workflows.

• Format: Step x/y (e.g., Step 1/5)

Alternatives Considered

• A visual progress bar (might be too heavy for a CLI).
• A percentage completion indicator.

Here are some ideas:

1. Using the built-in write_todos: https://geminicli.com/docs/tools/todos/ tool in the Gemini CLI, instruct the agent to pass a fixed list of steps as arguments to the tool. This solution worked very well in the past when I tested it.

Pros:

• It leverages the Gemini CLI built-in tool.
• It looks amazing and feels native, without any extra echo or other tool output dialogs.

Cons:

• It only shows the progress as TODO x/y, and there's no way to customize that.

Important

Providing the agent a fixed set of steps to be used as an argument is more reliable than expecting the agent to interpret the command TOML file and figure out the steps on its own.

Caution

Sometimes, the agent fails to find the write_todos tool when using Gemini 3 models.

2. Create an MCP tool with similar behavior as the write_todos tool. This tool will use echo to show progress.

Pros:

• It saves tokens to print visual indicators.

Cons:

• It does not feel visually natural like the write_todos tool since it prints a new output dialog every time it shows progress.
