Enable SSL verification on Windows

The only things I can think of would be GDAL built without vsicurl or vsizip support which can be tested with
gdalinfo /vsizip/vsicurl/http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM1/Region_01/N46W114.hgt.zip/N46W114.hgt

The other issue would be internet access related, the site blocked by someone or something. Was it tested outside the FS network?

Thanks for testing off network @latwood. Could you also test 3.1.0 (downloading from firelab.org)? We know for certain this version was working at some point...

Not sure how the problem could be gdal built without proper support since we're still using gisinternals...

Maybe Options->Set Config Option CPL_CURL_VERBOSE=ON and try again. Maybe something is wrong with the curl build. I'll attempt to fire up a VM.

Okay, I think I've figured it out, but it requires a new release. The SRTM data has been moved behind SSL/https, which requires a local cert for the encryption. I think this is solved by installing the curl-ca-bundle.crt file distributed with the gisInternals GDAL installation. The second part is setting the config option mentioned here:

I'm trying environment variables to see if it acts as a work around...

I had the same problem with 3.1.0 so I also tried it out on 3.0.1. Same problem as well. It would have taken me less time for these tests, but for some odd reason the downloads have been very long, even though I get 60 Mbps on my internet speed test. I guess the internet speed test server is closer than where we store the Windows version of WindNinja or something else slows it down. I then decided maybe something from the newer version is getting forced onto the older versions so I uninstalled them all. For some odd reason the current version left the 3.1.1 folder after I ran the uninstall.exe file like normal. I tried deleting it manually, got administrative permission, and it wouldn't delete. Considering I am an administrator, it was a strange thing. [image: Inline image 2] I restarted my computer then it let me delete the folder. I reinstalled 3.0.1 and still had the same problem. I uninstalled everything again, restarted my computer, installed 3.0.1 and tried again to no avail, though I discovered that it does work if the elevation source is a landscape file or the WORLD GMTED (250m). My home computer is windows 10 and I don't know if I've tried using WindNinja on it before so maybe we need to try a computer with an older operating system, and maybe a computer that has never had WindNinja on it before. Plus we could ask someone that has an older version but hasn't installed a newer version to test it out. Probably the deleting the folder was just a my computer thing, but if not, I did get it to fully delete when I restarted my computer. Hope this helps. Loren

I can't get boost to link, so no build for me. Try it tomorrow, and let me know how it goes. You'll have to upgrade to the 2.1.x stable branch of gisinternals GDAL.

Is it possible your boost issue is only when convert_stl is on? I just noticed the other day that I couldn't build that exe on windows without issues linking to boost. I didn't look into it...

FWIW, CPL_CURL_VERBOSE did find the issue, and can be a handy debugging tool.
